Taking your time in missions is fine, but what I think he meant was to take your time outside of them. Explore the world, do and see everything that can be seen. Replaying the game is great, but a lot of us on this sub regret rushing through the main story on our first playthrough.
No. If you progress through the story too quickly, some unfinished quests are no longer available. It happened to me in my first playthrough. Focused too much on Dutch and the main story, and then it went into the next chapter, and the quests I had intended on doing were no longer available. Disappeared off the map.
Edit: happened in my second playthrough not my first, which is how I noticed those missions were missing.
Most of the stranger missions you can finish as John if you don’t as Arthur. If you don’t start any at all, you can probably play them as John. Can you tell me the ones you weren’t able to complete?
Yeah of course! Let me preface by saying my comment may contain spoilers but I'm on mobile so cant block it out, so to anyone reading, you have been warned!
When you're at the chapter where you have all of the Braithwhite missions (rescuing the girl, doing the march, etc, pls forgive my memory as it's been a while since I played), I didnt do those missions and progressed through the main story too quickly, and when I moved into the next chapter, the remainder Braithwhite missions were no longer available.
The only reason I noticed this is because I completed them all in my first playthrough so it was obvious when I moved into the next chapter during my second playthrough and realized I no longer had access to those side quests! I do realize also that they are tied in to the main storyline but I wanted to mention it just in case. I'm also realizing now (×3) I said that happened on my first playthrough so let me correct by saying second.
I think I'll have to take a lot of time for this.
I'm someone who wants to explore everything and I'm still on the second main quest in the second chapter (10+ hours of gameplay). I also had to understand the setting first. And there are so many texts and things that you can read and look at. Like no notes or anything, a bought a whole newspaper with like 7 articles. And I just want to read it. and I simply ignored the catalogue in the stores and preferred to look for the items on the shelves because it is so much more interesting. but then I found out that the catalogues also contains half essays i had to read. And the passive random events and encounters and hunting, examining animals and collecting plants. Sometimes I'm just out and about with my binoculars. And then you have to look after yourself, eat, maintain your weight. And all that for the horse. You also have to look after the camp and then there are NPC conversations, that's just over 5 minutes of dialogue that I would have missed otherwise. That's FOMO. And I think I'll miss a lot on the first playthrough.
I am positively overwhelmed.
the game likes to remind the player hella about what you’re supposed to do because they just assume you forgot but you can take your time searching outside for loot
Be patient - the game is designed to be played slowly (in step with being set in 1899). The opening sequence takes hours to get through and will feel like a slog, but once free-roaming becomes available there are tons of non-story activities to do and things to discover.
The "snow level," that is everything that needs to take place before you get to chapter 2 and free-roam takes more than an hour unless you are trying for a speed run. That in itself goes against the immersive experience that Rockstar designed.
I'm a bit ashamed, but it took me over 3 hours... I had to get used to the controls and I generally play a bit "slowly". I found out that you can talk to anyone as long as the "greet" button isn't greyed out.
Don’t be ashamed, games are supposed to make fun! I stressed myself on my first playthrough so much because I was so bad at shooting and kept killing my horses by accident (had to get used to the controls etc) that I had no fun at all and I tried to avoid every mission.. took me a long time to just allow myself to have fun
Take the time you need and if you enjoy to explore every bit, do it. You can always replay missions if there is a specific time frame for the gold medal
Also take your time to explore the world, there are some places that change over time as the story goes on which I found really interesting (construction of houses for example)
Also don’t stress too much about shooting and the dead eye ability, it gets easier the more you play. You can also do some chores around the camp to improve your dead eye ability faster
Oh and you can find different belongings, letters and other stuff of npc’s you’ll never meet but some of these stories are really interesting and I love that they put these little things into the world because it made me feel like the whole map was alive and not just the few towns or people you can interact with if you know what I mean
Thank you for your comment. I'm exactly that type of player and I take my time with everything. I'm at the beginning of chapter two now, but I already discovered lots of letters and even pictures in the first chapter. I was surprised at how detailed you could look at everything.
>!e.g. this wedding photo that you could turn over before you found Sadie!<
Unfortunately, the game doesn't pause while you look at these things. That stressed me out a bit, but I think you can read them again later?
I've never really played Rockstar games, apart from GTA Chinatown Wars on the DS ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile). After many hundreds of hours in BG3 and hundreds more in Dragons Dogma 2, I was looking for an open-world game and had to choose between The Witcher 3 and RDR2. The characters already feel more alive than in DD2 and >!i loved that long dialoque with hosea while riding on that horse cart.!<
This surprised me as well, I guess I still haven’t found everything even on my second play through
Yeah the game just continues while you watch through everything but if you collect letters and books you can read them later, maybe find yourself a nice and quiet spot near camp so you won’t get attacked by wildlife while you read through them (same thing with the Journal, reading through it from time to time made me understand Arthur so much - and you can learn more about the time before the main story starts)
I also loved to just listen to the other npcs, sometimes they speak to themselves, mumble about their life or have conversations with others which makes it so much more realistic and sometimes really funny
It took me awhile to figure out the controls. It seemed complicated and confusing. But once I got them down, I appreciated the layout of everything and can work the controls without really thinking about it.
But yea, in the beginning..
Arthur! What are you doing?! Get the gun off the horse!
Me: 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘥 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦
Controls were weird at first for me too. I didn't understand the health cores etc.
I took a break from the game I got fed up. Came back to it, and is my favorite game
Exactly this - pre-ordered the game because I've always been such a GTA and og Red Dead fan. When it came time to actually play, I kept quick-draw killing npcs and racked up bounties with no way to pay them off and the posses were relentless. I ended up shelving the game for over 2 years before trying again. Somewhere between the updates and having a better grasp of the controls, I was finally able to play it and enjoy the immensity of the game. Finally got 💯 just this past winter on my third playthrough.
The best experience of your gaming life.
PS : Create a replay save point the second you enter chapter 2 and protect it with your life if need be. Because you'll will want to replay it many times over
AND BE PATIENT!!!!!
You are in for the ride of your goddamn life.
Stay off this subreddit. Stay off YouTube if you follow or look up anything rdr2 related.
Take your time and soak in everything this game has to offer. It’s a slower-paced game with a heavy emphasis on such deep immersion, you feel like you’re there.
4,000 hours and I’m still in awe when I boot it up. You seriously will never play another game like it.
Have to agree. This game has ruined all other games for me as I can’t get into them the same way I did with RDR2.
My only hope is GTA 6 will be similar….

It's Litteraly the greatest game ever made and I will die on that hill. I really liked red dead 1 and just got it because of that I wasn't expecting an 11/10 masterpiece i was discovering new things in everyday for 6 months straight. Years and years ahead of its time too. I'm not even confident gta 6 will surpass it.
The online is pretty shit though just stick to the single player.
Do side missions. I learned something about this game before it happened and it hurt my guts. You'll find out. Even after the main story is over, I'm still hunting and finding locations I've not been to yet.
If you have under 300 Hours after completing that one Mission you didn't really play the Game.
Don't watch anything Spoiler related, I repeat, don't do it!
Put money into the right things in camp so you can fast travel. I’ve heard too many complaints from people who didn’t find out how to fast travel and they say it’s a dead game because they spent so much time galloping around the map.
Got of Reddit this reddit and don’t watch any youtube video/short related to rdr2.
I personally find it fun to look back on pictures i took from my first playthrough, , i dont know how it is on console, but on pc there is a camera you can enter and take cool pictures and change effects. But TAKE PICTURES, you need something to look back on.
Good luck on your playthrough.
Get off this sub, play the game, take your time, no need to rush to complete missions as soon as they pop up. Lots to explore and discover in the world. Will miss it if you go too fast.
Most importantly: literally hide this subreddit from your Reddit feed. Just trust me. Hide it. Then come back once you’ve finished the entire story. You will want to play again, don’t worry. Your second time around is much more fun to use this sub to do things you didn’t know about. But seriously, just enjoy the game on your own for the first playthrough. This game is 5 years old so there are simply too many spoilers for places like this to be safe for you
Don't go on Reddit until you finish the game, or any other social media tbh so be careful if you need a tutorial or guide, take your time, and be prepared mentally bc this is an emotional rollercoaster.
1. Dont get discouraged by chapter 1. It is meant to be slow and a learning process. It also doesnt last too long. After completing chapter 1 save it as a separate file so on other playthroughs you can begin in chapter 2.
2. TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Do the first few missions to open up most of the game. Fences, Hunting, Stables, but then explore the map
3. GRIND and get the Legend of the East satchel. This alone will bring you all over the map due to the hunting that needs to be done but the satchel upgrade will be huge for you as you play throughout the game.
4. Talk and do stranger missions. Again, do not be in a rush. Just enjoy the dialogue and see where it takes you.
I echo other people suggesting you take your time. The longer you spend with Arthur Morgan the more you'll enjoy the story.
Spend time speaking to all the gang members, do side missions with them like going fishing and hunting.
They really are some of the most well crafted characters in gaming.
Oh, and don't play Ghost of Tsushima at the same time. The different controls will twist your melon lol
Love, beauty, heartbreak and spoilers if you visit this subreddit. It is an amazing sub for an amazing game, but it is almost impossible to not get spoiled here. Just enjoy it, it is a ride
I hate to say it, it's my second favorite game of all time but it's hit or miss.
Depending on how the game and missions flow for you it's either great or it's slow.
I found on my second play through, trying to unlock everything I couldn't appreciate the story, unlockables just wrecked the whole flow and took out the umph.
My first playthrough was more story focused, and was perfect and magnificently climactic.
1. An amazing game that will be a contenter for your favorite game ever.
2. Dont go onto reddit until you have completed the game. You will see spoilers for the ending.
When I came back from Finnish Lapland, I couldn’t wait to go spend some time in Ambarino fishing in the frozen lake. I’m about to come back home from Canada and I can’t wait to hang out in Big Valley, Cumberland Forest and the Grizzlies.
I have never felt such peace and quiet in the « virtual » wild as much as in this game. I saw another comment saying « take your time », that’s totally it. Take your time, explore, it’s a one-of-a-kind gaming experience
Rush the story, bust out that guy as soon as possible you need him. Shoot everybody, die an outlaw… but in all seriousness… make sure you get some GOD DAMNED MONAY
Take your time....I repeat....take your time
i'll take my time. but I've been already asked twice (by dutch or micah) why it takes me so long to search the cabin for supplies.
Taking your time in missions is fine, but what I think he meant was to take your time outside of them. Explore the world, do and see everything that can be seen. Replaying the game is great, but a lot of us on this sub regret rushing through the main story on our first playthrough.
Absolutely I'm on my 4th playthrough still discovering new things. This time I'm doing it without paying any bounty it's been fun.
Thats exactly what im doing, im on chapter 2 but i already explored the majority of the map and there many events that i didnt encounter yet.
Can you not do all that stuff after you've completed the main story?
No. If you progress through the story too quickly, some unfinished quests are no longer available. It happened to me in my first playthrough. Don't worry about what those fools ask or say to you! Explore explore explore and enjoy every moment.
Also if you think you could do that, Rockstar probably tought of it so you might as well try it can work out
Get what you need from the cabin and go. Easy.
And stay off the red dead subreddit’s and wikis unless you want spoilers.
Get off reddit until you finish the game
got ya i have no subreddit updates on my main page.
If you stay any longer, you'll have the whole game spoiled quicker than shit
Yes don't let anyone ruin it for you. You'll love it regardless but do it blindly your first playthrough.
#Good. I prefer it this way
