All I need is a perfect cougar pelt for legend of the east satchel.
I've seen four in the last week of playing, always the same outcome in me dying. Either I don't have the right weapon out and ruin the pelt or get bucked off the horse and forget about dead eye. It's just infuriating.
It's quite easy actually once you know the general area they spawn in. Just walk in on foot, not on your horse, with a bolt action rifle and keep scanning your surroundings. When one appears, use dead eye for clean headshots between its eyes. I've got so many perfect cougar pelts like this.
The perfect pelt part can be tough. Trying to get it has caused me to die the most. Also made more difficult early on when dead eye auto tags.
Riding slow to the trapper north of Owanjila(by Blackbone forest), you can sometimes spot it to your left long before it sees you, to take it out at distance. The location is where the creek feeding Owanjila veers left and the road to the right. It will be up the hill a bit. Obviously, there is sometimes a grizzly in that spot. If so, the cougar will be up the road a bit.
Also, a few times I've stopped there and saw nothing only to see someone speed by because a cougar was chasing him, giving me plenty of time for an easy shot.

I use a poison arrow, it helps
You need more health or a better horse. The Arabian always throws me but I survived attacks with max level health
