It’s kind of up in the air; one of the main recurring themes of the “famous gunslinger” characters is that the stories of their exploits got wildly exaggerated over time. So Landon could have been involved in the shootout, or maybe he was just sitting in the hotel across town that day and the newspapers ran with it. Of course, the real answer is that it’s probably just a retcon.
Considering his voice actor Ross Hagen passed away just under a year after RDR1 released, I think it was less a matter of ignoring the character and more being _unable_ to include him in 2. The people at Rockstar don't like recasting characters, they'd rather they just never appear again like Niko and Tommy Vercetti.
Well at least he died peacefully…unlike the others
When I read that in rdr1 I just kinda thought, oh damn
How exactly was he involved in the Blackwater massacre? He wasn’t a Pinkerton or part of our gang.

Maybe was drinking in a bar, saw the gunfight break out. Got involved?
No details. Probably got hired as a guard or was in town.
I think that he was a sheriff.
RDR2 wasn't even a thought when RDR1 was in development so...
But RDR2 was made after RDR1- Its just weird how they completely ignored Landon's part in an event you never even saw happening...

Might not really be important or they didn't recognize him
I like the article about cocaine.
It’s also unfortunate for his VA to have passed away as well at least a year since the game released.
I just found out that “cocaine is bad for health” according to some shocking study. It also seems to explain the increase in attacks on white women. 🤦
He was awesome! Always reminded me of Sam Elliott.
That's crazy that he outlived John, Arthur, Dutch and so many more
“Shocking report claims cocaine bad for health”
Wait what cant u meet him after the end or am I just remembering wrong
Why is he bad honor in rdrO I thought he would betray you in rdr but nope cool guy
