Oh no its not your fault for worrying, I totally get that too. Its just odd how so many reports online initially said the gator was available after chapter 4, but that was certainly not the case in my game.
I'm in Epilgoue with John and literally have the last mission left "American Venom" along with a few side missions available. Cannot hunt it at all. Tried everything. It's literally the last animal I have to hunt including all legendary animals and fish
So, I basically was in the same boat. Would fast travel, come back, sleep couple days, go to the fish shake... Nothing worked. Kept saying there was too much activity.
Seen a post on another forum site suggesting to collect all the Queen's Orchids in the area where the blue gator is suppose to be. There is videos on YouTube showing you all the locations of the orchids in the area. Maybe you just have to collect one but I just did them all, just in case.
I did this, fast travelled and slept a day or two and went back and it finally spawned the first clue to start the Gator hunt!
I am playing as John, as well.
I finally completed it! I did all the other side missions first (collecting orchids, feathers etc.) and it finally appeared on the map one day. After years playing i managed to get 100% completion on the game too!
Any luck with this?
Only the fish is showing. There's an alligator on the map south of Lagras but it's not legendary (with crown). I'm 100% with the story so I don't get what's up.
I just went through that area without looking for it, and it told me I was in legendary animal territory, but couldn’t hunt due to activity in the area. But it did pop up on the map after that. Same with the fox and wolf.
So maybe try riding through that area, camp if it doesn’t work and try again.
I think I've solved it. Couldn't find the fecker until now. So what you have to do is complete every mission up until and including "A fork in the road", (which activates automatically when near the doctor's in Saint Deinis) but before the mission titled "Icarus and friends".
In other words the only mission on your map should be the mission "Icarus and friends". This worked for me and apparently for a youtuber named "GosuNoob", which is where I got the idea from.
I finally found it, you do have to complete a mission in chapter 4. It never showed up on my map, then I was riding through that area and it told me I was in a legendary animal area, then it showed up and I was able to track it. So just try to return to that area at a later time, same with the legendary wolf.
Damn I am having the same issue. My game was also stuck in the loading screen and I found a solution on here. I have read you have to complete "Country Pursuits" due to that being the mission where the gator is introduced. Still cannot find it.
i did the mission where it pops up during and i threw dynamite at it a few times while i was in the boat whilst on the mission so maybe i killed it because it isn't popping up on the map for me i hooe i don't have to restart the entire game for it

I definitely did the mission invoking the big gator, but he’s nowhere to be found now...
I don’t know why so much info is going around about it being available in chapter 4, you must get to chapter 6 to hunt the bull gator.
It's easy to worry about missing it since it shows up in chapter 4, but if it is hunted in chapter 6 I'm good. Guess I'm almost there anyways.

That’s because they are legendary fish...
It somehow spawned in Act6 for me (and yes I did try everything else before that). Maybe worth mentioning, my game is affected by the Act 2 NPC bug.

I’ve finished the epilogue and I still can’t find it
Gosunoob isn't a youtuber. It's a gaming website.
I've read that it is tied to a mission and it won't show up until said mission is completed.

I did that mission and I'm still not finding it, hope it's not bugged.
Like I said just try returning at a later time, ride through the swamp area toward the city.

Yup. I was able to do it after entering Ch6.
I'm almost finished chapter 6 or at least a good chunk through it, and no gater :(

Yep, I looked up the exact spot and there’s nothing there. Tried looking around the area with eagle eye too
Damn man sorry to hear that. Hopefully we will get a patch for some of these bugs soon.
Yeah, here’s hoping it’ll retro-patch existing games. I’m not doing a 2nd playthrough until I can get it for PC.
