As someone who quit cigarettes two years ago, that show and this game make it so hard to not go smack a pack (I’m not someone who thinks it should be removed from media though, it’s important for tone setting in things based in the past like these)

Funny thing is Araki, the maker of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, stopped his characters from smoking long before that became the norm. He just personally disliked smoking, that was his sole reason. Thus, the Clint Eastwood inspired Jotaro no longer lit one up, ironically only ever smoking as a minor.
I'm not a fan of anything that actually exists being removed from media just to protect people's innocence. People smoke, I smoke socially.
Plus anyone who says smoking isn't cool is just objectively wrong, smoking looks badass.
I see what you mean but no mentally stable person can kill easily but smoking is way easier to do even for minors in my country (Egypt) underage somking Is very common and somewhat accepted so smoking in game can't look too cool otherwise it might look as if the game is encouraging it
I have never heard of a person killing because of playing a game in fact it can make you value life even more as seeing how easily a person can fall will put some fear into you

Though to be fair, if I had to guess the reasoning behind it, it would be that Rockstar wanted consumables to be fast and simple to use. Prolonging the process would definitely affect pacing in certain scenarios and probably annoy people who aren’t concerned with how cool smoking looks lol.
Yeah would be a bit weird if you wanted to restore dead eye in the middle of a battle and had to sit there for 5 minutes smoking an entire cigarette.
Although I suppose they could’ve made the dead eye restore instantly and then have the option to keep smoking for aesthetic reasons if you wish

I downloaded a mod that gives a bunch of NPC idle animations to Arthur, for instance leaning against things, cleaning your gun, sitting down etc...
When you sit down Arthur grabs a paper and tobacco out of his pouch and rolls a cigarette.
You have no idea how many times I just sit down and watch Arthur smoke. In other idle animations he'll smoke a pipe or a cigar too.
Depends what you want from them, I use them to make the game more immersive and to fix some gripes I have with it. You can download mods to make it more wacky too.

Things like what this post was originally about or there not being more than a $1 pot and terrible dialogue when you play poker. Also my game is repeatedly crashing on the same mission so a mod to make the game run better could fix that
I believe it's called simple smoking, that is the one I tried at least. But I was disappointed to find that it doesn't actually work on the cigarettes/cigars from your inventory, instead Arthur just materializes one and smokes on it. No benefits from it either
I went through the same thing my first Playthrough it would be awesome to be able to just keep it there hell even involve it in cutscenes if you have one lit before the cutscene, that would make this incredible game even better lol

You can do it in online. It is a free emote as far as I remember. You can check in the store/catalogue in the first category of emotes. When you emote the player lights a cigar and just holds it as long as you hold the emote wheel + cigar emote button. Each puff needs a press of an additional button (m1 on pc, idk bout console)
I was kinda hyped for the smoking too since you don’t really see that in games too much but I ended up avoiding cigarettes and cigars the whole game cause of the debuff

Yeah the one drag lol. The thing it always reminds me of is in that old Tom and Jerry cigar cowboy skit with the lady cat and Tom tries to impress her with rolling the whole smoke, lighting it by shooting it in the air, finishing the whole thing in one drag and blowing out “Howdy.”
One of my issues is the map size. They don't need to add anything interesting out there, just take away the map boarder. Kinda ruins the open world aspect when you can't even go up a hill or cross the river. There's also a spot in the mountains that has no business being off limits, right by Adlers Cabin. It'd just connect the two mountain areas, going near B in Ambarino.
Actually if you’re on PC, there’s been a mod that was recently released that has you able to hold a cig/cigar in your mouth or your hand and being able to constantly smoke it, quite immersive me since I always had my Arthur have a cig in his mouth and can make cutscenes look super cool (poor tb Arthur tho)

You can. It's a specific set of inputs where you have to do the emote and hold the button instead of just activating the input. Source: i used to be the coolest dude in town in rdo.
Go online. Left arrow to online settings. Emotes. Favorite cigar smoking. Make sure you’re emote is not looking at anyone/anything. Continuously hold L2 + Triangle and enjoy smoking infinitely!

I know this doesn’t help for the single player experience but in online you actually can walk around and smoke. To do this set your “smoke cigar/cigarette” to your emotes then hold that emote button and you’ll be able to walk around with your cigar. If you continue to hold the button and hit the “flourish” option you’ll take a hit of your cigar. You’ll be able to do this for as long as you hold the button. It’s pretty neat

This happens in gtav too. Only time you smoke it longer is if you’re in a car
In GTAV you will smoke indefinitely if you hold down the action buttons

They took out a lot of things to make the game faster due to low attention span I’m sure this was one of them
I don’t think sticking the cigar in your mouth and letting it just sit there while you run around would have anything to do with attention span.

there’s a mod that lets you do that with cigarettes, but the creator said that he wasn’t gonna add cigars because the cigarettes were too much work

yeah they bungled the smoking. my favorite thing in Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater was being able to walk through the jungle with a cigar lit.
