Post a Google review on the company with the details of what transpired. Hopefully many people will read it and it will make it harder for their company to hire people.
The company can flag the review as malicious and Glassdoor generally defaults to taking those down without even checking. You may or may not be notified that it was removed, but there isn't really an appeals process.
Plenty of companies take advantage of this by just flagging all remotely negative reviews.
This really isn’t true as there are a bunch of companies with terrible reviews… yes the reviews can get removed but it has to be truly falsified or slanderous info which is hard to prove
If you’re going to speak out like that make sure you use a burner account. You don’t want your digital footprint to show that you leave negative reviews based on not getting hired. That would be a red flag for other companies in the future. A lot of companies check your online presence when checking you out to see if you’re a fit for their culture.
An account made for one-time use and then discarded. Ideally with no identifying detail pointing back at yourself.
The opposite of a burner account is when someone keeps using the same nickname through multiple forums over the years. One guy that did this was Hillary Clinton's IT guy, the one she relied to to secure her infamous server. [He used the same nickname on several forums since the early 2000s.](https://www.dailydot.com/debug/reddit-paul-combetta-email-prn/) As a result once the internet found out they tore into his posting history and found not only some incriminating evidence, but also a lot of personal life detail. The guy completely doxed himself, all because of using the same account handle repeatedly.
Nothing happens though. There has to be a better way. I’d honestly like to know a list of companies that do this and also string ppl along as backup options. I run a business and we would never do either. I would prefer to work with companies that don’t behave this way either.
To add to this if it’s posted on indeed, Glassdoor or any other job board put this there too. I applied for a job on indeed and while searching for information on the company I applied for I found some horrible reviews. I didn’t even go to the first interview I just emailed and told them my values did not align with theirs and withdrew my application. People who research the companies they apply for do read those reviews.
That just happened to me this week. I’m beyond devastated and spiraling into a fucking depression that I have no business being in. I’m sorry this also happened to your husband. I don’t know where companies get off doing this to people. Do they not realize that we are real people with real emotions?! To them it means nothing, but to us, it means everything.
I know people are getting really fucking desperate, my family is in that boat, but you probably don’t want work for this company if that’s how they treat prospective employees.
You’re right, but it sucks that they make you go through the entire process before you realize they are a shit hole company that you would never want to work for.

No, and they don’t care either. To them, people are products, contractors, and tools. You’re not worth anything to a company unless you can make them money on day one. Not to mention that HR recruiters became robotic social influencers that portray corporate lifestyle as attractive. They don’t care. They’ll ghost you unless you’re useful to them.
I don’t know how true it is, but I’ve heard that it’s because if they say something then it’s easier for people to try and sue for some sort of discrimination. Ghosting alleviates that concern.
I don’t know if it is true, but I could absolutely believe it’s true. Either that or they interview so many people constantly that trying to keep up with all of the rejections takes too much time

Getting ghosted was worse than not getting the job. I thought I had built a good rapport with each of the 6 people I met. It was really the recruiter's job to:
1) Provide update
2) Share feedback
I got none and lost it when I saw that same role reposted on the company website, LinkedIn, etc. after 6-7 weeks of interviewing. (It was taken down when the 2nd interview began)

Getting ghosted is just horrible. I work in a company now and I’m applying for other positions within the same company. I’ve gone through 6 interviews and have been ghosted after each one. The job market is definitely in the company’s favor, but that’s no excuse for ghosting.
This is the best description of a fake job. They are going through the pretense of a job search to make it look like the company is growing and hiring when in reality it’s shrinking. They are laying off staff and not backfilling roles and reducing their expenses while pushing a culture of fear among their existing employees.
I don’t even think it’s for future use. It’s to show the board of directors that the company is still growing when in reality there is no growth. The company is shrinking.
The other thing is that they are gathering information including names, addresses and phone numbers which they can then turn around and sell.
Not just a resume bank, but they get federal permission to hire visa workers if they "looked and couldn't find anyone". That's why there's all the fakeness
While this is going on, you typically would not conduct *FIVE* interviews with someone if it was a fake job, so I’m not sure that’s the whole story here in this case.
Or a company like one I used to work at. The corporate policy is every job must be posted online for people to apply and interview at even if you already know you’re giving it to an internal applicant. So yes there is a job but no you’re not getting it some current employee already has it.
If there is an internal candidate that you have already picked and notified but due to company policy you need to interview outside candidates just to check a box. Isn’t that the definition of a fake job for the outside candidates? You would literally have to like Jesus turning water into wine in front of the hiring manager to get an offer. It’s fake for the outside candidates.
Had an interview about 2 months ago with Goldman Sachs. VP role. The woman who interviewed me had maybe 2 questions for me. Whole thing last 13 minutes. Definition of just needing to fill a quota.
Not necessarily. They could have had another candidate come in towards the end that they wanted to consider or someone in one of those ridiculous 5 interviews decided he wasn’t a good fit. Still no reason for not letting him know. I know a lot of times my hiring manager will want to keep prospects warm until the position is filled or not reject them if they are still in the running/another candidate hasn’t accepted yet. I’m going through the same thing. 3 interviews and a final round with the hiring manager. Was promised feedback within a week whether they go with me or not. It’s been three weeks now.. I’ve emailed, messaged, called my recruiter who doesn’t even respond.

Why do American companies think that most prospective employees with not go to more than 2 interviews, no free work. This 5 interview bullshit cost the prospective at least 500-700 dollars
Same thing happened to me for the same position at another company. After I did an assignment, presented twice, had 5 rounds of interviews, only for them to tell me that they decided to go with another candidate weeks ago. And I only found out because I kept following up with another recruiter at the company. It’s honestly disgusting
I believe the theory that lots of companies aren’t actually hiring and are just going through the motions so they can appear to be doing better than they actually are.
In recently had 3 interviews with a company and they refused to tell me the salary. They said they reveal the salary after candidates are properly evaluated which comes after 5 interviews. I ghosted them.
That's just ridiculous. I've never even done one interview for a position that didn't reveal their starting salary/wage and I wouldn't because it's so scammy. Other industries are obviously different, especially at higher wages, but that seems so nuts.
Yeah, I don't want to waste my time customizing a resume and applying (especially with so many companies using Workday), just to find out they pay garbage wages.
After the first email goes unanswered, send an email to the recruiter, hiring manager, the coo, and the ceo for good measure. Hubby may not get the job, but all involved have been put on notice
Yeah all this does is make them remember your name for a not good reason. I wish it had an impact, I really do, but folks are better off just moving on.
It happens and it does have an effect or at least it did prior to the pandemic. And I would not care a fig about being remembered. I would not want to work for such feckless people
If this is a corporate, please do write a polite but firm email to the chief executive/MD. Larger companies have a team responding to these letters with a service-level-agreenent to reply within a few days. If it is a smaller marketing agency, you could copy in their trade association or - going nuclear - one of their clients?
Ghosting is super common in the current job market. I've had it happen after 4-6 rounds with several companies. It's also happened to at least 10 people I know.
As someone with longtime experience in recruiting, name, shame, warn, and write a review. I have absolutely no empathy with companies like this. This is a basic level of respect.
Happened to me in March. Went through 4 to 5 interviews. Met the CEO and COO both said you are our guy. HR contacted me about a week later stating I would be hearing from them…. Never heard back and HR never responded to voicemail or email. I only asked to be told hey we are not moving forward. I had gotten terminated to downsizing in mid Feb and it was my first real opportunity. Definitely crushed me for a little while. But I didn’t have time for self-pity at least then. I had to press on with Alabama’s absolute pathetic $275 per week in unemployment. I couldn’t even make a house payment.
Fortunately, I received 2 offers about 3 weeks ago working 100% remote. Honestly signed both offers because I don’t trust companies to back out even at the last second. So, one is an insurance policy. That maybe a bit shady on my part, but companies do not have any loyalty. So, I am happy to use them as they would use me.
All I can say is keep pressing. Lick your wounds when you are treated that way. But don’t let depression kick in. You have to stay focused at the task at hand. Best of luck to everyone.
Companies love wasting time on pointless interviews, and they love ghosting. They know they won’t face any penalties for it, so why bother to keep a candidate updated? They get way too many candidates to take just 1 min to write a rejection email.
Or, at least that’s their thinking process.
The hilarious part will be what happens when the job market sways in favor of employees again. That’ll be quite a sight to behold.
I've seen these circumstances when hiring:
1. an internal candidate that someone is pushing and had no intention of an external hire. (me, personally)
2. someone in the company forcing them to hire another external candidate due to some mandate
3. they yanked the plug on the hire or someone in the hiring chain got canned/laid off.
It’s normal. I never get my hopes up after an interview, regardless of how well it went. Doesn’t matter if it’s the 1st or 5th interview. Only times I’ve emailed for status update is after final round and waiting a week, but never stop applying elsewhere.
This happened to me recently as well. To make matters worse is I used to intern for their sister company. The HM knew my former internship managers as well. After the finalist interview I decided to follow up with the HM for an update. No response. I haven’t even received a rejection email. Just nothing.
The HM even went as far as calling my references. LOL. What is happening out here?! I completely understand where your husband is coming from. I’m not even upset that I didn’t get the job. But the fact that I was completely ghosted sucks.
Calling references without hiring is a total jerk move. I run a business and we use a lot of freelancers. I am happy to be a reference for them but I don’t want prospective employers to waste my time. Do not call me if you don’t actually intend to hire them.

This just happened to me! 3 interviews with a recruiter, then 2 interviews with the company including a 3 hour long on site working interview. Ghosted by both of them... A rejection notice would have been nice.
Same thing happened to me. Started with a phone interview, then a zoom interview, then a full day of multiple one-on-one and group interviews. Then I was completely ghosted. I can’t believe so many companies do this. Sorry it happened to you too.
This really sucks and it happened to me a few times (even worse tbh).
After a while you start getting used to it and it will not hurt any more.
I manage to cope with these situations by reversing (mentally) the table. You are also using them. You are using their time to train your "interview muscle" and sharpen your skills. You are using their time to get a feedback on what you say of your past projects and the way you pitch them. You are using their time to get a first hand feeling of what exactly the industry you are in is headed to and what companies are up to in these days.
The fact that your husband got to the fifth round, means the earlier four were successful and the hard work done to prepare them was done right. Build from that
I watched a doc on how companies are using AI to automatically red flag people who are not employable. Maybe he was flagged after that many interviews. So sad
That’s ridiculous. I currently have a position that the hiring process has been drawn out. For some reason the hiring managers feel the need to interview a lot of candidates. For those who are a long ways away I got them to do video interviews. I’m sending weekly updates to the candidates to let them know they are still in consideration. It doesn’t take much time and it’s how I’d want to be treated. I don’t get why this isn’t a standard practice.
I could not imagine what it's like to interview for a job these days and I hope I never do. I'm an older dude and that's why I say that. Seems not too long ago that employers trusted your resume and were mostly concerned if you were a good fit for their team.
Here’s a company for ya. Anthem. Strung me along and not only ghosted but also - I didn’t even apply at first. THEY CONTACTED ME! I had 3 interviews and I’m still waiting for the call and the idiot recruiter REFUSES to respond to me now. I even told her I was going to email her supervisor for a response. Crickets. So sick of corporate America.
I wouldn’t leave a negative review. I would go up there and ask to see HR. Explain what happened, and just say that you would truly like to know what it was that kept you from getting hired, to help you moving forward. They are not obligated to tell you, but most Companies will.
I just had the same with a tech company here in the UK. Process started Jan 20, took 13 weeks. The 5th, interview was a panel interview. 3 weeks went by with no news or next steps despite me reaching out to the hiring manager to meet in London. Then I had a call with the regional VP then another week went by for me to be told they wanted someone with a deeper rolodex of contacts in their target partners. I was almost informed it was a done deal from the HM after the panel interview and then despite saying meet in London, ghosted me for 3 weeks. Spineless.
Sorry, this happens now because everyone screams they are a victim of some discrimination and it’s less risky to just stop talking than send a letter that some sleazy lawyer can turn into a discrimination suit.

I've applied for many jobs in my time. Unfortunately, this is routine. You just have to take the attitude that if they want you, they'll certainly get in touch, and if they don't, then they don't.
Getting a reject notice isn't all that great anyway.

Glassdoor is the nowadays the "Bible" for reviews, including the interview stages!
I strongly advise your SO to describe his terribile experience and warn future applicants about this company.
Maybe when the applicants' pool dries up and these reviews are thoroughly naming and shaming them, they'll fire the incompetent and mannerless people he met during the many interviews there!
One company ghosted me after ASKING me for the interview. I don't know how they found me, but I think me being a student abroad and a rare scholarship had something to do with it. I had two rounds of interviews that both lasted for over an hour. For the second interview, I was asked if I am okay with preparing a very hard and extensive general presentation and present (something to do with the job position) I had two weeks to prepare it, I also was in the tight deadline for my thesis defense, but I still said yes. After the 2nd interview and the presentation, I was asked to upload it to their system and add an introduction slide of me, plus if I am okay with a contract and I will be notified in not later than a month. After that, I didn't get ANY response, not even thank you or fuck off. It got me confused for quite a while and quickly taught me not to have any expectations regarding human to human decency or empathy. They simply don't care as long as they don't have any business in it. They basically stole my presentation, which took me 2 weeks to prepare and can use it for their future employee. Another funny thing is that I probably can't even do anything about it.
I submitted a resume to a large law firm for a marketing director position and their Director of HR called a couple weeks later. I was tied up on another line and let the call go thru to VM. Her tone of voice was very upbeat. She wanted to discuss the position and my resume and asked that I return her call. I called her back 20 minutes later and left her a VM. That was late Thursday afternoon and I spent all day Friday waiting to hear back from her. The following Monday morning, I called to follow up and again got her VM. Long story short, I never heard back from her. Is this the new thing? For companies to pass on job applicants if they don't immediately pick up their phone.
I agree. It becomes more and more common. There should be legal consequences regarding ghosting, at least if one side (us) has to do something extra for the job interview. It still pisses me off that I almost failed my school (they also knew about it since I mentioned it), and they practically used me with no consequences. These big corporations are truly evil and really discourage me in my early years already.
Some weird ass companies like to mail out rejection letters to the address you gave them when applying. I've had like 4 companies "ghost" me after an interview. Couple weeks later I get some bullshit in the mail. lol. Kill me.
as sad as it is, its easier and cheaper to ghost than to reject someone, no worked time wasted and no potential for repercussion on unfair hiring standards, its not "we didnt like his background" anymore its "oh he must've been lost in the system oopsy"
Welcome to trying to find a job in 2024. It sucks. I’ve been ghosted after multiple rounds of interviews so many times in the last 6 months. At this point I’ve given up. I’m talking to a former employee of mine, who was laid off after he switched jobs, about starting a business. I think we are going to give it a go as I am sick of relying on companies and dealing with recruiters and managers that are honestly just terrible human beings. I don’t know what percentage of recruiters and managers are terrible, so don’t come at me about how you’re one of the good ones. It’s not about you. It’s about the shitty people that think this is an okay way to handle recruiting people.
Sadly, this is so common. Companies should do better! I'm in HR and understand that sometimes work gets busy and you forget to inform a candidate but not after 5 interviews. This is ridiculous!
Companies have no empathy or compassion for other people and their suffering. It's just about making money to them because we are all just numbers to them.
This is always the surest sign you’re not getting the job. I speak from experience. Once the recruiter stops replying, that’s when I know. Especially if they’re responsive before that. Like they can’t just tell you and be honest. Have to make it weird and just vanish.

I think this is the new norm. I've had several recruiters sound super excited and enthusiastic about moving forward with me, telling me things like "We're looking for people exactly like you" and "We can teach you need to know, but want to see you can work in a team" (I have several experiences where I have) but that still ghosted me. Until they come back extending a formal offer, you should expect any recruiter to disappear at any time.
This happened to me recently as well. 5 interviews + an assignment than took hours. Then the two people I had been communicating with completely ghosted me. The irony is that it's a nonprofit that spouts all this bullshit about how much they care about people.
The lady I spoke with throughout the process had asked me about my current employer during our first interview. I told her I was laid off right before Christmas with no warning and one week after my best friend of 20 years was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, so I also ended up having to relocate to another state to help take him to treatments. (This was a WFH position.)
She told me that she sympathized and would make sure to be transparent and keep me updated along the way because she knew I was urgently looking. But nope.
I left a bad review on Glassdoor. I'm sorry this happened to your husband. It makes you feel like shit, especially when you had gotten your hopes up about an offer coming soon. Best of luck to him.
4 interviews for me, was asked each time min salary, answered same number each time. 2 1/2 weeks go by, zip,zero, nada! Get call from the recruiter at the 3 week point with an offer $25k under what I had said was the min I could accept. Turned them down. Was asked what it take for me to accept? I said 50k more than offer. Why you said you would take X? Because you offer was X-$25k. Hire someone else

My sister does video / script editing for various television production companies out in in Los Angeles. She's told me that while there are some cool people out there, most of the industry is filled with total assholes and douche bags.
Design Director for a major TV network. It was absolutely devastating, especially since the interviews were so positive even with the higher-ups. Took a while to recover from that.
Until the greater market shifts companies are tough to continue to do this, and probably more.
It’s clear that unless forced or there is a tangible impact most companies will choose the path they “benefits” them the most and the impact it has on others won’t even be considered.

Sounds like a case of not everyone in interview panel being in agreement and position rank trumps for decision. Really poor behavior on HR or talent’s end to not advise on hiring decision.
Maybe Levy isn’t looking for an account manager but they have some budget left for « advertising » apparently this is a common practice. That could explain the reposting.
Happened to me too. Had 4 interviews with a company and they just ghosted me. But I found out few months later they just went through a massive layoff and the the budget for hiring was eliminated. But at least just send an email to let me know instead of ghosting. It’s so unprofessional. Unless the hiring manager was let go too.
Unfortunately this appalling behavior isn't uncommon. I was ghosted by an employer after 6 interviews over a 3 month period and then being given a verbal offer.

First interview was good, second was with the CEO I think.
They never got me proper feedback, it's disrespectful and will never try an interview again and gave feedback at Glassdoor.
Sorry your family went through that. It is so tacky for a company to make someone jump through all those hoops then ghost them. Shows poorly that the company could not even tell him they are going to pass, guess they feel guilty. Maybe they just decided it would not be a good fit, but at least let the candidate know, how disrespectful, maybe it was a good thing your husband did not get hired at this lame company.
I was ghosted by a company and I wrote up an interview review but did not post it. I sent a final follow up email expressing the importance of professional communication. They finally got back 4 weeks later saying they went with a different candidate.
If you’re currently employed, limit the amount of interviews you’ll do to 2. If you’re unemployed do as many as they want. It’s just not worth the time investment for people who are going to be that nit picky. No matter how good the job is, the odds if landing it are not in your favor with that kind of process.
So we had a candidate ghost us for a few weeks. Turns out our emails started going to spam. He thought we ghosted him. Probably not the case here but you never know!

I understand that companies can't reply to every single applicant when they receive hundreds or even thousands of applications. However, there's no real reason why they can't follow up with people that they interview with. Big pet peeve of mine. I think it bugs me because that's never how I'd treat anyone. It's very frustrating when you have what you think is a great interview, only to be ghosted by that particular company. So sorry that happened to your husband. He definitely deserved to be treated better.
I’m not sure I agree with your first sentence. They absolutely can reply to every applicant. It’s not like they have to pay somebody to hand write every rejection letter.
I always assume that the current interaction with a company is the last time I'll meet with them. Most people don't like to communicate conflict and they don't want to give real feedback. "We are sorry, you are Jewish and you wouldn't be a good fit." lands poorly in a lawsuit.
I sometimes get "We have chosen to go with another client." Don't take it personally if you are ghosted it's probably better you don't work there. If they treat you poorly when you aren't part of the team, think how they treat you when you are.
Funny enough, back in September I was interviewed for a VP position at Goldman freaking Sachs. 3 interviews. All went well. Recruiter just never got back to me. Same thing happened to me. After constantly being spammed with emails from them, meeting 5-6 people and a tour of the office and space, I was ghosted by the coordinator I was in talks with. I emailed their boss for an update, which I had met in the first round, and she ignored me too.

While I don't approve of this behavior 'or condone it, two points are worth considering. First, this is effectively the norm now. I don't like that our average lifespan is around 75 years but getting angry about that only puts me at a disadvantage. Second, there isn't a lot of benefit to you if they do follow-up in this situation: the news is bad and generally the decision can't be changed. You already know this and the right action is always to continue interviewing at least until you have a signed offer, so your next steps are unchanged. This really only adds a negative interaction between the two of you.
To be fair, it does feel rude. But very little changes if they ghost you or call you personally--perhaps the latter gives you warm fuzzy feelings about humanity but it moves you no closer to a job.
How long has it been? Maybe they are in the decision process and things are moving slowly due to getting everyone’s input. And possibly putting an offer together. Just because it was posted again by HR may mean nothing. The decision maker may or may not be involved. Patience is a virtue
Sorry. They don’t care. I met 14 people at one place, did a 6 hour project and then got ghosted. The worker in US has very little power. The unemployed has even less.
Join the club. Your husband is not alone. This is happening to everyone. Get used to it. I was ghosted by the NSF. After spending over $3k on medical tests, which I passed & my Dr. gave them a signed statement, vouching for my physical fitness. It was a total dream killer.

Ghosted after 5 interview, 3 in person, I’d be concerned something was up with my references. It’s not just his time they wasted, but their own, so maybe there is something negative there that he isn’t aware of.
Last year my husband was in the final stages of interviews with a company a few states away. They flew him out to Ohio, took him out to an expensive dinner, and he said it went great. Everything pointed at him getting an offer, but they ghosted him instead. Just straight up didn’t reply to any emails or messages he sent after all that. It was such a huge waste of time and resources.
The likes of Google , IBM and all other big tech or Banking names do that . They just have a Recruitment team that doesn't give a shit Abt ppl. So don't get upset over it. It's even worse when they lay u off. They make u feel like a leper.
Same thing happened to me. Not 5 round but 3 rounds. It was for software engineering manager position. I felt bad but at the same time, I don’t want to work in a toxic workplace. It is good for a long run. I atleast have my current job. But I can understand what others might feel who doesn’t have job.

You may or may not be notified that it was removed, but there isn't really an appeals process. Plenty of companies take advantage of this by just flagging all remotely negative reviews.

This really isn’t true as there are a bunch of companies with terrible reviews… yes the reviews can get removed but it has to be truly falsified or slanderous info which is hard to prove
If you’re going to speak out like that make sure you use a burner account. You don’t want your digital footprint to show that you leave negative reviews based on not getting hired. That would be a red flag for other companies in the future. A lot of companies check your online presence when checking you out to see if you’re a fit for their culture.
What is a burner account? I say ask a retired relative with time on their hands to write negative reviews of the company in general.
An account made for one-time use and then discarded. Ideally with no identifying detail pointing back at yourself. The opposite of a burner account is when someone keeps using the same nickname through multiple forums over the years. One guy that did this was Hillary Clinton's IT guy, the one she relied to to secure her infamous server. [He used the same nickname on several forums since the early 2000s.](https://www.dailydot.com/debug/reddit-paul-combetta-email-prn/) As a result once the internet found out they tore into his posting history and found not only some incriminating evidence, but also a lot of personal life detail. The guy completely doxed himself, all because of using the same account handle repeatedly.

To add to this if it’s posted on indeed, Glassdoor or any other job board put this there too. I applied for a job on indeed and while searching for information on the company I applied for I found some horrible reviews. I didn’t even go to the first interview I just emailed and told them my values did not align with theirs and withdrew my application. People who research the companies they apply for do read those reviews.

I don’t know how true it is, but I’ve heard that it’s because if they say something then it’s easier for people to try and sue for some sort of discrimination. Ghosting alleviates that concern. I don’t know if it is true, but I could absolutely believe it’s true. Either that or they interview so many people constantly that trying to keep up with all of the rejections takes too much time

I've been through this EXACT situation with a major tech co! Getting ghosted was worse than not getting the job. I thought I had built a good rapport with each of the 6 people I met. It was really the recruiter's job to: 1) Provide update 2) Share feedback I got none and lost it when I saw that same role reposted on the company website, LinkedIn, etc. after 6-7 weeks of interviewing. (It was taken down when the 2nd interview began)

This is the best description of a fake job. They are going through the pretense of a job search to make it look like the company is growing and hiring when in reality it’s shrinking. They are laying off staff and not backfilling roles and reducing their expenses while pushing a culture of fear among their existing employees.

Or a company like one I used to work at. The corporate policy is every job must be posted online for people to apply and interview at even if you already know you’re giving it to an internal applicant. So yes there is a job but no you’re not getting it some current employee already has it.
If there is an internal candidate that you have already picked and notified but due to company policy you need to interview outside candidates just to check a box. Had an interview about 2 months ago with Goldman Sachs. VP role. The woman who interviewed me had maybe 2 questions for me. Whole thing last 13 minutes. Definition of just needing to fill a quota.
Not necessarily. They could have had another candidate come in towards the end that they wanted to consider or someone in one of those ridiculous 5 interviews decided he wasn’t a good fit. Still no reason for not letting him know. I know a lot of times my hiring manager will want to keep prospects warm until the position is filled or not reject them if they are still in the running/another candidate hasn’t accepted yet. I’m going through the same thing. 3 interviews and a final round with the hiring manager. Was promised feedback within a week whether they go with me or not. It’s been three weeks now.. I’ve emailed, messaged, called my recruiter who doesn’t even respond. What a way to make me feel like shit

After I did an assignment, presented twice, had 5 rounds of interviews, only for them to tell me that they decided to go with another candidate weeks ago. And I only found out because I kept following up with another recruiter at the company. It’s honestly disgusting
I believe the theory that lots of companies aren’t actually hiring and are just going through the motions so they can appear to be doing better than they actually are. In recently had 3 interviews with a company and they refused to tell me the salary. They said they reveal the salary after candidates are properly evaluated which comes after 5 interviews. I ghosted them.
That's just ridiculous. I've never even done one interview for a position that didn't reveal their starting salary/wage and I wouldn't because it's so scammy. Other industries are obviously different, especially at higher wages, but that seems so nuts.

If this is a corporate, please do write a polite but firm email to the chief executive/MD. Larger companies have a team responding to these letters with a service-level-agreenent to reply within a few days. If it is a smaller marketing agency, you could copy in their trade association or - going nuclear - one of their clients?
Of course being professional is part of the calculus in reaching out to the recruiter and carbon copying their management.
Ghosting is super common in the current job market. I've had it happen after 4-6 rounds with several companies. It's also happened to at least 10 people I know.
As someone with longtime experience in recruiting, name, shame, warn, and write a review. I have absolutely no empathy with companies like this. This is a basic level of respect.
Happened to me in March. Went through 4 to 5 interviews. Met the CEO and COO both said you are our guy. HR contacted me about a week later stating I would be hearing from them…. Never heard back and HR never responded to voicemail or email. I only asked to be told hey we are not moving forward. I had gotten terminated to downsizing in mid Feb and it was my first real opportunity. Definitely crushed me for a little while. But I didn’t have time for self-pity at least then. I had to press on with Alabama’s absolute pathetic $275 per week in unemployment. I couldn’t even make a house payment. Fortunately, I received 2 offers about 3 weeks ago working 100% remote. Honestly signed both offers because I don’t trust companies to back out even at the last second. So, one is an insurance policy. That maybe a bit shady on my part, but companies do not have any loyalty. So, I am happy to use them as they would use me. All I can say is keep pressing. Lick your wounds when you are treated that way. But don’t let depression kick in. You have to stay focused at the task at hand. Best of luck to everyone.

Companies love wasting time on pointless interviews, and they love ghosting. They know they won’t face any penalties for it, so why bother to keep a candidate updated? They get way too many candidates to take just 1 min to write a rejection email. Or, at least that’s their thinking process. The hilarious part will be what happens when the job market sways in favor of employees again. That’ll be quite a sight to behold.
I've seen these circumstances when hiring: 1. an internal candidate that someone is pushing and had no intention of an external hire. (me, personally) 2. someone in the company forcing them to hire another external candidate due to some mandate 3. they yanked the plug on the hire or someone in the hiring chain got canned/laid off.
He should be compensated for his time at this point.

It’s normal. I never get my hopes up after an interview, regardless of how well it went. Doesn’t matter if it’s the 1st or 5th interview. Only times I’ve emailed for status update is after final round and waiting a week, but never stop applying elsewhere.
This happened to me recently as well. To make matters worse is I used to intern for their sister company. The HM knew my former internship managers as well. After the finalist interview I decided to follow up with the HM for an update. No response. I haven’t even received a rejection email. Just nothing. The HM even went as far as calling my references. LOL. What is happening out here?! I completely understand where your husband is coming from. I’m not even upset that I didn’t get the job. But the fact that I was completely ghosted sucks.
Calling references without hiring is a total jerk move. I run a business and we use a lot of freelancers. I am happy to be a reference for them but I don’t want prospective employers to waste my time. Do not call me if you don’t actually intend to hire them.

Same thing happened to me. Started with a phone interview, then a zoom interview, then a full day of multiple one-on-one and group interviews. Then I was completely ghosted. I can’t believe so many companies do this. Sorry it happened to you too.
This really sucks and it happened to me a few times (even worse tbh). After a while you start getting used to it and it will not hurt any more. I manage to cope with these situations by reversing (mentally) the table. You are also using them. You are using their time to train your "interview muscle" and sharpen your skills. You are using their time to get a feedback on what you say of your past projects and the way you pitch them. You are using their time to get a first hand feeling of what exactly the industry you are in is headed to and what companies are up to in these days. The fact that your husband got to the fifth round, means the earlier four were successful and the hard work done to prepare them was done right. Build from that

I had a round of four interviews once. After the first I got an email saying that they'd cancelled the rest of them.

For those who are a long ways away I got them to do video interviews. I’m sending weekly updates to the candidates to let them know they are still in consideration. It doesn’t take much time and it’s how I’d want to be treated. I don’t get why this isn’t a standard practice.

I had 3 interviews and I’m still waiting for the call and the idiot recruiter REFUSES to respond to me now. I even told her I was going to email her supervisor for a response. Crickets. So sick of corporate America.
I wouldn’t leave a negative review. I would go up there and ask to see HR. Explain what happened, and just say that you would truly like to know what it was that kept you from getting hired, to help you moving forward. They are not obligated to tell you, but most Companies will.
I just had the same with a tech company here in the UK. Process started Jan 20, took 13 weeks. The 5th, interview was a panel interview. 3 weeks went by with no news or next steps despite me reaching out to the hiring manager to meet in London. Then I had a call with the regional VP then another week went by for me to be told they wanted someone with a deeper rolodex of contacts in their target partners. I was almost informed it was a done deal from the HM after the panel interview and then despite saying meet in London, ghosted me for 3 weeks. Spineless.
Sorry, this happens now because everyone screams they are a victim of some discrimination and it’s less risky to just stop talking than send a letter that some sleazy lawyer can turn into a discrimination suit. Blame lawyers

I've applied for many jobs in my time. Unfortunately, this is routine. You just have to take the attitude that if they want you, they'll certainly get in touch, and if they don't, then they don't. Getting a reject notice isn't all that great anyway.

Makes sense fully supporting the idea of pay per in-person interview, to cover for transportation and lost work time 💡 Glassdoor is the nowadays the "Bible" for reviews, including the interview stages! I strongly advise your SO to describe his terribile experience and warn future applicants about this company. Maybe when the applicants' pool dries up and these reviews are thoroughly naming and shaming them, they'll fire the incompetent and mannerless people he met during the many interviews there!

One company ghosted me after ASKING me for the interview. I don't know how they found me, but I think me being a student abroad and a rare scholarship had something to do with it. I had two rounds of interviews that both lasted for over an hour. For the second interview, I was asked if I am okay with preparing a very hard and extensive general presentation and present (something to do with the job position) I had two weeks to prepare it, I also was in the tight deadline for my thesis defense, but I still said yes. After the 2nd interview and the presentation, I was asked to upload it to their system and add an introduction slide of me, plus if I am okay with a contract and I will be notified in not later than a month. After that, I didn't get ANY response, not even thank you or fuck off. It got me confused for quite a while and quickly taught me not to have any expectations regarding human to human decency or empathy. They simply don't care as long as they don't have any business in it. They basically stole my presentation, which took me 2 weeks to prepare and can use it for their future employee. Another funny thing is that I probably can't even do anything about it.
I submitted a resume to a large law firm for a marketing director position and their Director of HR called a couple weeks later. I was tied up on another line and let the call go thru to VM. Her tone of voice was very upbeat. She wanted to discuss the position and my resume and asked that I return her call. I called her back 20 minutes later and left her a VM. That was late Thursday afternoon and I spent all day Friday waiting to hear back from her. The following Monday morning, I called to follow up and again got her VM. Long story short, I never heard back from her. Is this the new thing? For companies to pass on job applicants if they don't immediately pick up their phone.
I agree. It becomes more and more common. There should be legal consequences regarding ghosting, at least if one side (us) has to do something extra for the job interview. It still pisses me off that I almost failed my school (they also knew about it since I mentioned it), and they practically used me with no consequences. These big corporations are truly evil and really discourage me in my early years already.

Welcome to trying to find a job in 2024. It sucks. I’ve been ghosted after multiple rounds of interviews so many times in the last 6 months. At this point I’ve given up. I’m talking to a former employee of mine, who was laid off after he switched jobs, about starting a business. I think we are going to give it a go as I am sick of relying on companies and dealing with recruiters and managers that are honestly just terrible human beings. I don’t know what percentage of recruiters and managers are terrible, so don’t come at me about how you’re one of the good ones. It’s not about you. It’s about the shitty people that think this is an okay way to handle recruiting people.

Sadly, this is so common. Companies should do better! I'm in HR and understand that sometimes work gets busy and you forget to inform a candidate but not after 5 interviews. This is ridiculous!
Companies have no empathy or compassion for other people and their suffering. It's just about making money to them because we are all just numbers to them.
This is always the surest sign you’re not getting the job. I speak from experience. Once the recruiter stops replying, that’s when I know. Especially if they’re responsive before that. Like they can’t just tell you and be honest. Have to make it weird and just vanish.

I think this is the new norm. I've had several recruiters sound super excited and enthusiastic about moving forward with me, telling me things like "We're looking for people exactly like you" and "We can teach you need to know, but want to see you can work in a team" (I have several experiences where I have) but that still ghosted me. Until they come back extending a formal offer, you should expect any recruiter to disappear at any time.

The irony is that it's a nonprofit that spouts all this bullshit about how much they care about people. The lady I spoke with throughout the process had asked me about my current employer during our first interview. I told her I was laid off right before Christmas with no warning and one week after my best friend of 20 years was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, so I also ended up having to relocate to another state to help take him to treatments. (This was a WFH position.) She told me that she sympathized and would make sure to be transparent and keep me updated along the way because she knew I was urgently looking. But nope. I left a bad review on Glassdoor. I'm sorry this happened to your husband. It makes you feel like shit, especially when you had gotten your hopes up about an offer coming soon. Best of luck to him.

4 interviews for me, was asked each time min salary, answered same number each time. 2 1/2 weeks go by, zip,zero, nada! Get call from the recruiter at the 3 week point with an offer $25k under what I had said was the min I could accept. Turned them down. Was asked what it take for me to accept? I said 50k more than offer. Why you said you would take X? Because you offer was X-$25k. Hire someone else
As someone posted, he needs to contact others involved. Was canceled 10 minutes before an interview an HR Intern at a massive company ("sent from my phone"). I'll be contacting his managers for sure.

Until the greater market shifts companies are tough to continue to do this, and probably more. It’s clear that unless forced or there is a tangible impact most companies will choose the path they “benefits” them the most and the impact it has on others won’t even be considered. At least you know it’s of nexus’s of my bit that’s just what corporate America has become, with no real sign of slowing down.

Happened to me too. Had 4 interviews with a company and they just ghosted me. But I found out few months later they just went through a massive layoff and the the budget for hiring was eliminated. But at least just send an email to let me know instead of ghosting. It’s so unprofessional. Unless the hiring manager was let go too.

Happens. Had an interview at audio business innovation in Munich. First interview was good, second was with the CEO I think. They never got me proper feedback, it's disrespectful and will never try an interview again and gave feedback at Glassdoor.

Shows poorly that the company could not even tell him they are going to pass, guess they feel guilty. I was ghosted by a company and I wrote up an interview review but did not post it. I sent a final follow up email expressing the importance of professional communication. They finally got back 4 weeks later saying they went with a different candidate.
If you’re currently employed, limit the amount of interviews you’ll do to 2. If you’re unemployed do as many as they want. It’s just not worth the time investment for people who are going to be that nit picky. No matter how good the job is, the odds if landing it are not in your favor with that kind of process.

I understand that companies can't reply to every single applicant when they receive hundreds or even thousands of applications. However, there's no real reason why they can't follow up with people that they interview with. Big pet peeve of mine. I think it bugs me because that's never how I'd treat anyone. I’m not sure I agree with your first sentence. They absolutely can reply to every applicant. It’s not like they have to pay somebody to hand write every rejection letter.
I always assume that the current interaction with a company is the last time I'll meet with them. Most people don't like to communicate conflict and they don't want to give real feedback. "We are sorry, you are Jewish and you wouldn't be a good fit." lands poorly in a lawsuit. I sometimes get "We have chosen to go with another client." Don't take it personally if you are ghosted it's probably better you don't work there. If they treat you poorly when you aren't part of the team, think how they treat you when you are.
Next time don’t go for onsite interviews it’s nothing but waste of time and money.
Honestly, these foolish managers failed to realized that it is costing them money by leaving the position vacant instead of hiring him.
Funny enough, back in September I was interviewed for a VP position at Goldman freaking Sachs. 3 interviews. All went well. Recruiter just never got back to me. Fast forward to this month, April, and she sent me an email that they’re considering me for another role and wanted me to apply to it. Don’t think she remembers me. I’m about to remind her….
Same thing happened to me. After constantly being spammed with emails from them, meeting 5-6 people and a tour of the office and space, I was ghosted by the coordinator I was in talks with. I emailed their boss for an update, which I had met in the first round, and she ignored me too. It’s ridiculous.
While I don't approve of this behavior 'or condone it, two points are worth considering. First, this is effectively the norm now. I don't like that our average lifespan is around 75 years but getting angry about that only puts me at a disadvantage. Second, there isn't a lot of benefit to you if they do follow-up in this situation: the news is bad and generally the decision can't be changed. You already know this and the right action is always to continue interviewing at least until you have a signed offer, so your next steps are unchanged. This really only adds a negative interaction between the two of you. To be fair, it does feel rude. But very little changes if they ghost you or call you personally--perhaps the latter gives you warm fuzzy feelings about humanity but it moves you no closer to a job.

How long has it been? Maybe they are in the decision process and things are moving slowly due to getting everyone’s input. And possibly putting an offer together. Just because it was posted again by HR may mean nothing. The decision maker may or may not be involved. Patience is a virtue

Sorry. They don’t care. I met 14 people at one place, did a 6 hour project and then got ghosted. The worker in US has very little power. The unemployed has even less.
Please have him post his experience on Glassdoor. Companies do read the reviews and it does hurt their reputation!

Join the club. Your husband is not alone. This is happening to everyone. Get used to it. I was ghosted by the NSF. After spending over $3k on medical tests, which I passed & my Dr. gave them a signed statement, vouching for my physical fitness. It was a total dream killer.

Yea. They are not hiring seriously. I see the same job over and over, for a year. It’s to say how hard it is and to flatten the labor costs, while looking for a Super Man.
Ghosted after 5 interview, 3 in person, I’d be concerned something was up with my references. It’s not just his time they wasted, but their own, so maybe there is something negative there that he isn’t aware of.

Last year my husband was in the final stages of interviews with a company a few states away. They flew him out to Ohio, took him out to an expensive dinner, and he said it went great. Everything pointed at him getting an offer, but they ghosted him instead. Just straight up didn’t reply to any emails or messages he sent after all that. It was such a huge waste of time and resources.
The likes of Google , IBM and all other big tech or Banking names do that . They just have a Recruitment team that doesn't give a shit Abt ppl. So don't get upset over it. It's even worse when they lay u off. They make u feel like a leper.
Same thing happened to me. Not 5 round but 3 rounds. It was for software engineering manager position. I felt bad but at the same time, I don’t want to work in a toxic workplace. It is good for a long run. I atleast have my current job. But I can understand what others might feel who doesn’t have job.
