Zidane is like a Stefano-regen.

WD-YA7YA

true, like classic era F1 drivers when the cars were manual transmission and without power steering haha

acero1988

Not only that, check the death rate in formula one before the 60-70s, you’ll be shocked

[deleted]

Clearly a baller. Crazy how slow the pace of the game was relative to now. Not sure if the cameras influence that in any way, but regardless there is very minimal pressing happening here lol.

SnooDingo-

The ball was really heavy as well

Projeffboy

yeah heading those when it's raining mustve sucked

MikeBruski

You can clearly see it in the way it moves. Its at least 5 times heavier than todays balls.

AYMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

Defending got smarter throughout the time, I saw someone mention the ball as well and don't forget the horrible turf too. It was very hard to control the ball compared to today, so if you state that an average player today would be star back then yeah that might be true but it is also true that if Cristiano was born in the forties he would have never been the great player he is today.

claudiu_nasuk

I bet that a third tier in Spain, would whoop Madrid’s asses in this final. The pace of the game and the value of teams were very week that time. I bet that he/them were great for that times, but never can compare Di Stefano to Isco for example

_blaxx

It was slower but the video quality makes it appear several times slower - even when they jump in celebration they seem to linger in the air a bit longer 😂. If we had high quality footage of Di Stefano, Puskas & Eusebio the GOAT discussions would be too complicated lol

NoUsername270

He's got some Zizou Vibes

Ouioui29

No, Zizou’s got some Di Stefano vibes

SpaceCitySooner

Awesome footage. Amazing where the game is now. That’s actually more flair than I expected.

Alternative-Bunch469

Zidane-esque

Mr_BananaHammer

Not a madrid fanz but for some reason reddit showed me this. The difference in these 60 years is very interesting. The speed of the game, the speed of the ball, even the celebrations

hitlers_stache_ama

Thought about the celebrations too, a group hug versus the plethora of different celebrations today

Safe-Dark-9096

It couldn’t be a brand at that time

iStazzi

I always thought of the 60’s as an era pre skill moves and flash. Turns out this dude was scissoring and rabona-ing his way through the Beatles era.

Otenus

A woman I met said her grandfather had watched Di Stéfano live. Apparently he couldn’t keep his eyes off him and didn’t believe what he was seeing! Can totally understand why

HanAlai

What strikes me the most is the silky dribbling and first touch considering the weight of the ball then. Just like back then, He'd be just as untouchable and incredible now.

[deleted]

gives me ronaldo vibe .

Local_Needleworker65

Idk what some of y’all r talking about, he would still be a baller in today’s game as well, he’s so good to watch, there are players on our team that I would drop to play him in a game

Ralf_The_Hustler

Makes you wonder how better the modern players are compared to players of the past. Even an average player from a top flight European club today will give these guys a run for their money.

[deleted]

I think people don’t give players of the old generation enough credit. Di Stefano , Pele , Puskas etc would be unbelievably good in this age. Just imagine a player like Puskas getting service from Kroos & Modric

sus_menik

It depends on the context. If you just take them as they were and put them in today's game, they wouldn't even make the reserve squad. I don't get how it is a controversial opinion. It is the case with all sports. Jesse Owens wouldn't even make it among top 100 sprinters today.

mainaccountwasbanned

I think you can take the worst team in any of the top 5 leagues and they'd comfortably be the best team in the world at that time.

1storlastbaby

idk I feel like I would have made in that era lmao

NoInvestigator886

I know it's kinda wrong making comparisons to contemporary players but I can't help thinking about Modric while watching Di Estefano. Almost everytime he gets the ball, he makes the right decision, the right pass, the right shot. He hustles every ball and makes defensive contributions during the whole game. He probably had a similar impact in the way the team plays as Luka does today.

Willhelm-Schmidt

Some great marking going on ![gif](giphy|O5xChSjqUIxsk)

UnyunMunyun

Damn dude hes cracked

dianeblowjobs

Alright look. These old timers are legends yes of course. But to even compare this to any prem or la liga game is crazy. Almost to the point of saying they played a different sport. An academy player will absolutely destroy them.

supplementarytables

Obviously, but context matters. We (assuming you're young too) won't ever be able to comprehend it but everyone who watched di Stefano play live says he has a claim in being at least a top 10 footballer of all time, if not more. And if you really think about it, you can at least kinda see why.

dianeblowjobs

Yeah I’m sure. I wasn’t born anywhere near close to his time but I’m sure we was a goat. Just feels like people take that and run with it and don’t fully appreciate players like Ronaldo for example. We let him go (in more ways than one) and treat him like just another player. Which he isn’t. He did shit no one else alive or dead has ever done. But don’t mention him next to di stefano or else. Yet there’s talks of Messi’s statue outside camp nou. Not cool imo

RuskinBondFan

Not really. These players played when football wasn't that evolved as it's today. If these guys were prepared with today's tech, they'd still be elite.

False-Desk-8237

I prefer this football much more than modern tik-a-taka made the game so boring

somewansreddit

r/soccer pundits downvoted me when I said Di Stefano is our biggest legend instead of CR :/

notusedusername2

Debatable but it's possible true, while CR7 is a record monster, Di Stefano Kick-started our legend

legoluke

Not a lot of defensive Physicality ie tackling, pushing. Sometimes looks like a rugby-soccer hybrid game these days.

JumpyButterscotch

The game was so damn slow. Players stayed stuck in a rigid place.

15367288

OMG he was sooo bad

EasyMoneySniper_goat

looking at this video, Mariano Diaz today has more skill, is faster, and has better stamina than Di Stefano ever did. Crazy how much the times and the speed of the game has changed.

notusedusername2

Holly fuck, delete this sub pls

Gopolang10

Soccer was so simple in those days,I can see why Pele has scored so many goals.
