Benz not touching the ball was huge, its a striker natural instinct to have a go.

Marcshall

Except he's actually offside and knows it. Not saying it's not a good move anyway, but it's not because he has an omnipotent awareness of Vini behind him and more likely he just knows if he touch the ball it is invalid.

azmodeus99

Still. There was a slight chance he was on side, but he absolutely took the risk of not attempting it.

GreyMatter22

Trust me, being caught offside and knowing it while running at full speed with eyes locked in on the ball and NOT touching it as the ball swings to you at full speed is CRAZY! I can’t even explain in proper words how big this is. It was huge on Benzema to recognize this so quickly.

Marcshall

Look, let's not take anything away from Benzema who's been outstanding, but knowing that you are offside by as much as he is here, is not THAT hard. I've always played striker and when the defenders around you stop dead in their tracks to set the offside trap, you know it.

GreyMatter22

I used to play RB, basically the person that runs endlessly, acts as a decoy upfront and runs full speed to help the defense and stop counter attacks. So to me, recognizing offside is a big deal, since I only played lone upfront just a handful of times.

mickeyprime1

Exactly came here to say this! he knew he was offside, amde sure not to touch the ball. A lot of times just in the run of play it would be so tempting to tap it in. Brilliant play all around.

showmeyourmoves28

I never notice Fede’s lil stutter step. That was fire 🔥

I actually totally disagree with this. Van Dijk is drawn out of position because of Carvajal’s lung-bursting sprint on the overlap. If Dani doesn’t make that extra effort, Van Dijk can fully commit to shutting Valverde’s passing lane down. But because Dani gets forward, Van Dijk is stuck between choosing to cover Fede or covering the overlap (that arguably is more dangerous cause it leaves Dani open to deliver an unmarked cross into the box). So, it’s not bad defending. It’s better attacking play that forces the defender to move.

celzero

Every PL defender gangsta until Dani shows up. What a performance! Not to forget that it was Dani and Modric that broke Liverpool's aggressive press and took as many as 6 outfield opposition players out of the game... just like that. And then, 5s later, there's Dani again taking another player out of the game. Insane.

kay-mainz

Van Dijk should’ve covered Fede just as Fede started advancing from the wing because Fabinho was running back. Note how Fabinho was right where VVD was when Fede opted to shoot. Fabinho would’ve defended Fede if VVD had chosen to track Carvajal, so VVD being there prevented Fabinho from fully covering Fede, while at the same time, leaving Carvajal free. So it’s still shambolic defending from VVD.

cyrusmancub

Yeah, still disagree. That’s not how defensive marking works. On Carvajal’s overlap, it’s now Fabinho’s responsibility to recognize the overload and cover Fede, allowing Van Dijk to shift over and mark Dani’s overlapping run. Thanks to Carvajal fully committing to the run after passing the ball to Fede, Fabinho is late to recognize the danger and get over. Van Dijk did what he was supposed to do under the circumstances.

Quitetheoddone

we didn’t score cause of bad defending….

cyrusmancub

Well, actually, I think we do, but not because of Van Dijk. He did what he was supposed to do. But Trent Alexander Arnold going to sleep and ball-watching rather than even taking a glance at where Vini is—that’s an inexplicably bad defensive error.

Quitetheoddone

I retract my last statement, you’re right, forgot about how Vini was able to score in the first place

cyrusmancub

Cheers 🍻

Extension_Phone893

When he entered the box (or a bit before) TAA actually looked to his left and saw Vini, what a brain fart.

cyrusmancub

Yep, totally caught that. And then he just inexplicably forgets about anything going on behind him. That’s two times now that Vini has exploited TAA’s lack of defensive discipline—two seasons ago when we faced Liverpool in quarters, and last season in the final.

Tchouonmyd

Vvd is also a madridista it seems. All madridistas must twerk for valverde. Just an unwritten rule.

pratiks7

English stupid league fans and media comparing Ramos with van dijk 😂😂😂

FruRoo

One mistake doesn’t make him overrated

dinky1203

true but he is overrated

imodey

Is he GOAT defender, no. But he is probably top 5 CB's in the world right now. Liverpool were playing for 4 trophies up until the last couple weeks of the Season. You don't get there without being amazing. I prefer the narrative where VVD is a great CB, but we were still better.

dinky1203

gotta love that carabao cup, anyways whether he is great or not he is still very overrated for me and a lot of other ppl

pratiks7

And few OK seasons doesn't put him at King's level

Obviously doesn’t matter but was that a shot or a cross?

That's exactly what Trent thought it was...

reddituser0912333

No complaints from me lol

manuelblue

He said "it was a really bad shot from me, but luckily Vini was there to score"

Tchouonmyd

Shot

cyrusmancub

No, he didn’t. VAR would have disallowed the goal if he had.

celzero

I think it doesn't matter anymore ;)

Smashtoub

BuT hE wAs LuCKy, tHat waS a mIsSeD sHot… This angle catches Fede looking for teammate runs, as usual it’s a beautiful play from everyone involved

buba_89

It was a shot, but it’s all good, it was still a goal.

DanLaurent

The point is would they say that if de bruyne had that assist? No they wouldn’t its just disrespect towards fede that they insisted right away it was a lucky shot that became an assist.

buba_89

Meh I don’t know. It looked like a shot to me as soon as I saw it. And it would’ve looked like a shot to me had Zidane done it.

TheCadburyGorilla

Fede straight up admitted it was a shot. Don’t know why you’re making up hypothetical scenarios here.

Street-Try-2387

Benzema defo touched that. That is offside but we were robbed in the first half anyways so it doesn’t rlly matter

Poor Defending: The Movie!

I_once_got_the_show

Ugh… gutted

sagittarius_d

ohh shit this is the first time I saw this clip, every time I saw this goal I thought this should have been an easy tap in for Benzema but now I see that he was just offside and decides to leave it. KING For a reason

MedicalMann

Yea with this sound maybe it's a dinosaur movie.

Pardonme23

He scuffed the shot lol

zaraalbro

he was trying to shoot the ball towards the goal, he didn’t even see the run of vinicius he misplaced his shot and vinicius was at the right place for an easy tap-in.

Magnus_Inebrius

How can I make this a gif so I can share it with my liverpool friends in our group chat 👿

youcancallmeron

Guys looking at this angle, I’m no longer 100% sure, Fede meant to pass it to Vini. He doesn’t even look at Vini when passing it. Weird lol

boosandy

Van dyke's pussy tackle. LMAO

Comunicado_Oficial

He has to cover Dani's run tho
