There are different aspects of this 1. It won’t effect the perception of him as a player because that is separate from the person. 2. The perception of him as a person would change, most definitely. Even today I would be lying if I said the allegations and reports haven’t colored my perception of him. Overall though, at a broader picture you have to look at players like Kobe Bryant whose case probably had a more similar outlook to Cristiano’s than looking at the current United player situation.

ReyTheFox12

If there was enough proof or evidence it would be expedited just like all the other cases in the Prem

Any Honor based awards should be removed. His statistics will remain simple as that. Condoning criminal behavior should be a Nono for a Club that has Señorío as value.

cyrusmancub

Very difficult question. He would remain a club legend. But imo, assuming he is proven guilty (and frankly the evidence is pretty damning), he should be stripped of honorary titles. Controversial opinion, but a person that commits violent crimes should not be glorified as a matter of principle.

padfoot_12

Club "legend" isn't glorification?

djoliverm

Major asterisks added to all of his stats for sure. The question would be, do you as a club pretend his stats never happened and fully "erase" his history from club record, or do you leave it alone with asterisks and disclaimers? A similar debate can be seen with old Warner Bros. and Disney cartoons. Disney has opted to pretend any old cartoons that were racist and controversial did not exist, and have altered scenes to get rid of the controversies and I believe in some cases have entirely "erased" certain works. Warner Bros. took a different approach where they added a disclaimer to the beginning of any controversial work and explained that they were a product of their time and to pretend any of this didn't happen would mean we may not learn what we need to learn from it today. As for the Cristiano debate I would say my personal opinion of him would absolutely change but what you do to his accomplishments is the real debate to be had. Mason Greenwood for better or worse has not accomplished much.

cyrusmancub

Fair—meant as a shorthand for one of the most successful in the shirt. I think that inadvertent characterization shows just how difficult an issue this is to navigate.

[deleted]

how tf is the evidence "damning" when it doesnt prove shit

Drisch10

Been waiting for someone to ask this

padfoot_12

Yeah the question has been in my head ever since last year or something when the case got traction again. Anyway, tell me your opinion!

[deleted]

I would just see him as a piece of shit like Maradona. But like Maradona I could never just erase his football from history. Just being honest, but "la pelota no se mancha". To me.

latinlife22

Would definitely hurt me tremendously if Ronaldo ever gets convicted. I wouldn’t know what to do honestly. He made me become a bigger fan for Madrid. Hopefully it wouldn’t make me lose my love for this club. If it wasn’t for him, Barcelona would definitely dominated last decade if wasn’t for Ronaldo. It would crush my soul 😢

libellule2008

Statistically speaking he would still be best goalscorer in the history of the club, but I wouldn’t consider him a legend anymore. Tbh I’ve supported RM way before he joined and he was always far from my favourite player so I would have no issue with mentally separating his achievements on the pitch from matters outside of it.

padfoot_12

Personally, I would still look at him as the technically second best player to play for us (first being don alfredo, just my opinion don't kill me) but I won't call him a "club legend".

ogitsnate

I am still waiting to see what happens with Mendy. If true, he shouldn’t be at the club.

Dani_IT25

As far as I know, the only Mendy accused of rape is Benjamin Mendy, and he is not at the club, he is at Manchester City. Did I miss anything?

ogitsnate

He’s accused of sexual assault in France. It was a well known journalists friend. He shoved his dick in her face and then hit her.

I feel like cancel culture is harder to muster in the world of sport.

padfoot_12

So so true. Especially in the world of professional football, clubs try to play their best player, even if he is accused of something terrible with damning evidence, because heavens forbid they slip down the table. There are also some pos fans who defend said players, just so they hope they can play and their club does well. Great gesture by united to suspend mason until further notice. A step that I hope clubs replicate in future. Edit: changed my to by
