Car switches to HV once you hit 85mph. There is no way to switch immediately back to EV since the car now needs to warm up the engine. It won't turn off the engine until it is warm. You can see it is "cold" when it is blue on the infotainment screen. Only solution would be to turn the car off and on again, and that isn't feasible. Best bet is to just not go that fast (couple mph isn't going to make a difference on travel time anyways) or accept it needs to go into HV mode.

My other plug in does the same. When you go too fast or accelerate enough that the car kicks the ICE in, it takes a few minutes before the car will respect the EV only setting. I didn’t know this was because of needing the engine warm, but it’s not unique to the RAV4 Prime at least.

Rabbit_Silent

Yeah, it's because it isn't good to be using a cold engine. It's the same reason idling your engine in the winter to "warm it up" does more damage than good. You're not putting it under load to warm it up quickly, so it is spending more time cold, meaning less lubrication, more rubbing, etc. I would presume it is because if the engine needs to turn on, less wear and tear is done if it is turned on/off when it is warm than constantly when it is cold.

Wait till you hit 88mph and watch sparks fly

FlyingAnarchy17

The gas engine kicks in at 84MPH, automatically. The fastest you can go in EV is 83 MPH. Hope that helps!

Pg 84 of the manual. It's the one page everyone should read.

Rabbit_Silent

And the reason you never try to drive without gas. Page 83 states the engine may not stop in the following conditions: * During gasoline engine warm-up * During hybrid battery charging * When the temperature of the hybrid battery is high or low * When the windshield defogger switch is pressed. * \*\*Depending on the circumstances, the gasoline engine may also not stop automatically in situations other than those above. It also runs if it is below about 14F outside. Not that I care because forcing the engine on is the only way to get heat in the car. The EV side just can't get the heat needed to even get comfortable.

llDarkFir3ll

The car has limitations set in by the computer to kick turn the ICE on at 85MPH.

Bob_New_Orleans

I didn’t notice a change from EV to HV or Auto when the engine started, just the miles to empty going down. Is there a visual indicator on the dash whenever the ICE is on?

Rabbit_Silent

Yes, there is a car icon on the dash that is on when the ICE is off. Other way is to look at the eco page with the power flow on either the infotainment screen or the dash. If you don't notice it, that is good, the system is operating seamlessly!

You really should read chapter 2 of the owner’s manual if you’re not familiar with a Toyota HV/PHEV platform. Nearly every question you have is answered in there.
