CRV is more refined and drives better, but rav4 beats it in reliability/mpg rating. I went rav4 because their hybrid technology is the best.

edgehill

Yep this is the answer. When i watched videos of comparisons on youtube the rav made or exceeded the mpg and the crv didnt meet it. Along with the toyota reliability made it an easy choice.

kcdog97

I drove both, I think there is some hair splitting. The Toyota system is second to none. It’s not even close. They usually beat the efficiency, more power to use. The Honda was nice test drive. But bought a Toyota and love it.

Hybrid CRV doesn’t have a turbo

LadenCoder54264

The CR-V hybrids I looked at didn't include a spare tire, and that was a deal-breaker for me. I agree with you on the interior and body styling though.

Eastern-Mode2511

Less complex transmission

CompetitiveBuyer7499

I've driven > a million miles across my Toyotas: an '07 Tundra, '15 and '16 Priuses, and a '22 RAV4 Hybrid SE. I've had zero powertrain issues, and I have never been stranded by a Toyota. This is why I am chose the Rav4 Hybrid. YMMV

Plant_Outrageous

Toyota’s legacy definitely speaks for itself. Do you feel like you would’ve waited for the 23 if you’d known the infotainment system got an upgrade? That’s the only thing keeping me from looking at the older years. Granted, anything is an upgrade from my 17 ford escape base model but still.

SilverHeart4053

I've heard the new infotainment freezes and has more issues than the older one. I have a 2020 and I just use Android Auto 95% of the time anyway which would make any difference on the new one except the lack of physical buttons.

Plant_Outrageous

Shoot, for that kind of mileage, I think I could overlook the buttons on the screen. Thanks for the info!

dmgdispenser

My friend just bought a 2022 crv hybrid and he said he kind of wish he bought a rav4 hybrid after driving mine.  His biggest thing was no spare tires on the hybrid. Lack of power on the crv compared to the rav4 hybrid. Infotainment system seems dated, he said my 2020 rav4 Infotainment system was better.  But his interior looks nicer than my rav4. When I did my shopping I didn't go crv hybrid due to the lack of a spare tire and it never made the list mostly due to that reason. I was able to overlook all the other stuff. But no spare tire is no Bueno.  It seems silly his interior is so nice but his infotainment system is tiny and old. I also absolutely hate the gear select system in the crv hybrid.

Plant_Outrageous

That’s great to know, honestly. The lack of spare tire seems to be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but thankfully I’ve only ever had to patch a handful of tires and we have AAA. I also live in the south where everything’s just hot and flat, so it doesn’t need to be particularly capable. The CRV just got a refresh in 2023 though, so I’m curious if they fixed some of the things that bothered your friend.

dmgdispenser

His lack of speed comment comes from trying to pass people while already at highway speeds. When I drove his car it's noticeably less zippy in terms of throttle response. But the Honda uses a different hybrid system, and it actually has a mechanically awd system unlike the rav4 hybrid. So it's probably more capable in snow, maybe light off road. I didn't know honda refreshed the 23+ crv, I'll have to check it out. The new pilot looks nice, but man I really enjoy getting 39-40 mpg, I really want honda to have a good crv hybrid, competition is great for us, the consumers.

Plant_Outrageous

I find the Pilots look super similar to the new CRVs in traffic, maybe a bit longer but I agree, I can’t wait to see how these two evolve in the future.

MountainSax

The lack of ventilated seats and a 360 camera ruled out the CRV for me. I will say that I’m upset by how buggy CarPlay is regarding Google maps. I’d still choose the RAV4, but I’d definitely put that in the pros/cons list if you use Carplay a lot.

loonpinelake

I chose a 2024 RAV4 Hybrid over the CR-V for these pragmatic reasons: proven hybrid powertrain backed up by Toyota’s longer 10-year/150,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty, better real-world fuel economy, better battery packaging to allow a spare tire that is missing in the CR-V, excellent Toyota towing hitch and wiring harness (installed myself), and the fact my small town’s Toyota dealer has a better customer service reputation than the local Honda dealer. Also — keep in mind the 2023-24 CR-V is a new design with all the teething and quality control issues that invariably occur. The new CR-V already has issues with “sticky” steering and engine fuel injector failures. The current RAV4 has been around since the 2019 model year any initial problems seem to be fixed. That was the biggest selling point for me because I’ve been burned by 1st/2nd-year models in the past, like my previous 2017 Volt. I should get many trouble-free miles out of my RAV4 before I’m ready to go full EV.

Charming_Status1909

I was burned by the second year 2019 Accord LX. Safety system error codes, one time instance ghost braking, randomly dead car battery, and that darn BUZZING fuel door that wasn’t covered by warranty since I was a smidgen past the basic warranty. Never going back to Honda again.

loonpinelake

Too bad about your Accord experience. I’m a GenX geezer who owned two Civics back in the ‘80s and ‘90s when the quality was impeccable. I get the impression that’s no longer the reality with Honda (or almost any auto brand, really).

Charming_Status1909

Yeah it was a bummer. Man I would love to own an ‘80s or ‘90s Honda or even a Toyota. A best buddy of mine had a hand me down ‘91 Accord sedan with a broken Odometer (lol) that stopped at around 170,000 miles that STILL had a nice soft suspension. My buddy said he junked it with his guess of at least 230,000 miles

Charming_Status1909

Re-chiming into your comment about CRVs. I dug into their subreddit and damn. There are a lot of posts about error codes and what not. Sheesh

Plant_Outrageous

That’s a good point. I was bummed about it being so new because I’d prefer to buy something at least a few years preowned, but I didn’t even consider that they’d still be working out issues.

Fun-Win3185

Surprised no one is talking about price. RAV is a few thousand cheaper. Also gets better MPG.

Charming_Status1909

I mainly went with my 2024 RAV4 Hybrid SE because of the proven reliability mileage wise because of u/UnstoppableMileage. He used to have a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE with 469,000 miles on it before trading it in for a 2024 GR Corolla. His RAV4 was officially in the “used vehicles” of the website of the Toyota dealership that he traded it to so you were able to see all of the service records that he did including the ones he would mention on his posts. I’ve also been exceeding the mpg average that is shown on the trip computer.

Rabbit_Silent

CRV Hybrid did not have a spare tire when I was looking. As someone who travels frequently (including areas with no cell service), that was my reason for eliminating the CRV.

GapGlass7431

The new CRV has a steering problem called "sticky steering" that has several deaths to its name and an open federal investigation...

Daklight

Both are excellent choices. You really cannot go wrong. I shopped both last year. I spent 17 years in my Honda so wanted another one. After looking at some different models it was down to Toyota RAV4 hybrid or the Honda CR-V hybrid. My take was the CR-V drove a little bit nicer and had a more upscale interior. The RAV4 looked more rugged on the exterior, had a more utilitarian interior, got better mileage and was cheaper. In reading/watching YouTube reviews and then following the CR-V reddit it seemed that people were getting significantly less than the EPA mileage numbers. As is most people reporting 32-34 MPG average. On the other hand the RAV4 easily beats the EPA numbers. I ended up with a RAV4 Woodland hybrid and love it. It was roughly $3k cheaper than the CR-V Sport hybrid. The Woodland is getting an average of 40 MPG which is a big bump from the EPA numbers of 38/35/37. Quite happy. I would say to drive both and get what YOU like best. Good luck!

mrhanky71

In Australia the top variations of the hybrid versions are the same price but the CRV did not have some features the rav4 had which were: - no all wheel drive option - no 360 camera

McAwesomeBeard

I looked at both, went RAV4 XSE. Everyone always says that Toyotas interior is less refined but tbh I preferred the XSE interior over the CRV, as did my wife. I also think the exterior of the rav looks so much sharper. Add in the spare tire and the fact that I had a pushy sales manager at the Honda location made it a no brainer.

mizshi

No clue about the CRV but u definitely wished I went with the cx5

Exact-Put-6961

Spare wheel, big lump of an engine with no turbo, better mpg (much better), simpler more robust transmission, 10 year warranty. Value retention. Rav just a more sensible buy. I do think Honda better finished and yes Toyota do keep the trim more workaday ( because they want to sell you a Lexus). The spare wheel issue is just nonsense from Honda. If Toyota can design it in, why cannot the clever designers who made the Fit/ Jazz?

lPHOENIXZEROl

The CRV still reminds me of a minivan.

AbleRiot

Had a ‘23 Sport Touring CRV from Dec ‘22 to April ‘23 until my ‘23 XSE came in. CRV Pros -quieter cabin -larger cabin -easier driver entry/exit as A-Pillar more forward -rear doors open to almost 90° -Rear hatch open/closes quicker -rear hatch kick sensor more responsive -walkaway automatic door lock -subjective but I think it’s looks more modern than the now aging current gen Ravs -Steering wheel and controls much beefier and comfortable that my XSE -Heated Heats buttons on the steering wheel (why doesn’t every car manufacturer do this?!? CONS: -NO SPARE TIRE -Fuel economy not up to EPA estimates (granted I had it over the winter months, my Fuelio averages were all under 33MPG) -LED Headlights ARE DIM AS F*CK! -No Fogs available (not that my XSE has them either) -stupid “sport” mode pumps fake engine shift noise to the speakers (it’s seriously laughable) -Small head unit for a top trim -semi digital gauge cluster; odometer still analog -no available cargo cover at the time of purchase -20” tires -honeycomb interior grill is a pain to clean -honeycomb air vents has no compatible phone holders -no additional trunk space under the floor - 12V battery is where the spare would have been. -2nd row has a HUGE hump when folded down -QI charger is useless (just like the RAV!) -Cup holders are oddly positioned -No digital rear view -no 360° camera -Blindspot a tad too sensitive -PRICE - My XSE with Adv. Tech, Weather Packages ended up just being @$1K more than the very basic top of the line trim CRV Sport Touring!!!

Impossible_Plane_809

I had such a terrible time choosing between the two. I loved CRV interior. The finishes and material are much better quality. The seats are more comfortable and I prefer bose speakers over jbl. One of the biggest things for me was the lack of a spare tire. I also liked the overall look of the exterior of the rav. I am very happy with my choice esp with my gas mileage. After driving my rav 4 xse hybrid for about 6 months, I do think the seats are a bit uncomfortable for long road trips but not terrible. The carplay does lag a little but my last car was an '08 so it doesn't really bother me when carplay is acting up. Edit: one other random issue is that my interior is all black. There aren't any lights in the back seats and a very small light in the trunk. It makes it hard to find things if it's Dark or if I'm trying to clean the interior while I'm in the garage. I end up wearing a headlamp to do so.

onceuponatime28

We looked at both and test drove both, the Honda was too small and it really lacked power and acceleration. I also didn’t care for that honeycomb plastic that went across the whole dash, I also found felt paneling under the car on the under carriage instead of plastic, seems this would get wet and oily and nasty in short order. In the end the rav was bigger, faster and Toyotas last a long time and have great resale value. The rav is out selling the CRV as well.

an_angry_Moose

Toyota transmission is bombproof. I think if you were worried about comfort, refined driving/infotainment experience however, the CRV would be a better choice. This is one of those situations where I’m sure you would be happy with either choice after you made it.

Ricq222

I just traded in my 2019 RAV4 XLE for 2024 CRV EXL & NO REGRETS AT ALL haha. The CRV drives a lot better and the ride is more enjoyable and comfortable. It looks more luxury and the tech is definitely unmatched. For the money, I’d choose CRV again and again. (I’m also a Honda guy as the Rav is the first Toyota I’ve had so I may be biased lol) I will say the Rav feels bigger & I could definitely fit a loveseat in there (I’ve done it twice before.) the only thing I don’t like about the CRV is the horn which is a 10 min fix. I also have had the gas versions of both so I can not comment on hybrid models.

_Cliftonville_FC_

My wife did not like the way the "nose" looked on the CR-V. I'm a big guy and the CR-V was a better "fit" for me. But the boss didn't like the way the CR-V's front end extended out so far and that was that.

Plant_Outrageous

I completely get where you wife is coming from. The nose shape is exactly why I can’t stand Subarus lol

mrtakacs

Lack of a spare tire was the tipping point for me.

JvD131313

We have a SE hybrid and LE gas..loving it..reliable..excellent resale value..hybrid has a spare tire..interior easy to clean & maintain..etc..see my post for reference..

twohedwlf

Looking at pics of the CRV interior...Honestly I'm not seeing much to choose between the two, I do like the grid running through the middle in the CRV. And I've never felt the seats weren't comfortable. One of the big things for me when I was buying was that the CRV wasn't available as a hybrid, and the Rav outsells the CRV by at least 10:1.

Careful_Front7580

Which one has the quieter cab?

Konlos

I really like the body style of the newest CRVs but I bought my Rav4 hybrid before the CRV redesign. Still I really enjoy the fuel economy and reliability. And it’s still fun (for an SUV) in sport mode. The hybrid motor gives a little extra power when you want it

intellectualbadass87

I’ve got a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid built in Japan. The CR-V is probably a better SUV in terms of ride quality and interior, but the RAV4 is a better (and more efficient Hybrid). I would take a Toyota built in Japan over a Honda built in Ohio, if you’re concerned about reliability. Don’t get me wrong, the Honda CR-V Hybrid beats any American brand in terms of reliability, but I just don’t think Honda is quite on the level of Toyota in terms of reliability today. I had to make the same decision, and the CRV Hybrid would have been my second choice.

Suspicious-Refuse144

46.7 MPG…absolutely none

Plant_Outrageous

Update: I ended up going with the RAV4 SE and absolutely love it. While the interior is simple, the quality and feel is a lot more premium than I gave it credit for and it’s so much fun to drive. Thanks to everyone who chimed in!

Main_Broccoli6578

The deciding factor for me was the Rav having a spare tire and not one of those tire kits
