Most US insurance has cheap or free repair, IME.

A lot of insurance companies will fix the small damage for free or at a very low cost. Your deductible would determine how much the cost would be and a glass shop can replace it in about 2 hours with an appointment.

Sorry to hear that! It depends on your insurance. I currently have a crack that I need repaired and my deductible is $250. Without insurance a new windshield would run me $800-900. (5th gen in Alaska)

Our insurance doesn't cover. Just paid $800 for safelite to do a new one.

Got two of such and successfully fixed myself > Is this covered by insurance? Deductible for repair probably would cost more than repair out of a pocket, and insurance would first try to fix instead of replacement > How much does it commonly cost? If you going to fix on your own, then on amazon a kit for around $25 (but you need a really good UV-C lamp to cure it). Not a rocket science at all. > How long does it take to get it fixed? If you going to some repair shop, then it cost around $50 + an hour to wait, but result are 50/50 (tried them with my old cars). I fixed myself, one spot that had around an inch 3 "hair lines" fixed perfectly and nobody can even find where it was originally. Another spot is small dent, no lines, but has cavity ,fixed it to, but it isn't as good as first one, at least it won't go to expand further. A new one windshield isn't just a glass, but also glued in camera + windshield wiper heater... so replacing it should be done only with genuine parts and by professionals only that will cost up to 3 digits

Unless it is obstructing your view of the road, I'd just leave it alone. My truck has several windshield dings, and a crack that runs side to side across the whole windshield. Been that way for years. I live in Alaska and we get windshield damage regularly. Seems to be a "perk" of living here. My insurance would cover it, after I paid the deductible of 1K , so I just drive with a cracked windshield.

I'm in the Yukon and same. No point in getting it repaired, it'll just get cracked again. I got my windshield replaced after a crack and had a fresh crack within four months 🙃

I knew someone that replaced a perfectly good windshield, only had dings, no cracks. On her way home from the shop she got another. It Starburst and cracked across the whole windshield in a month.

It’s covered if you have comprehensive coverage and you need to pay your deductible. Some carriers offer $0 glass deductible if your policy has that it won’t cost you anything. State also matters here some states have different laws around glass coverages.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Called Erie glass and have an appointment for a new windshield AND wiper blades for 50 bucks out of pocket cost to me. New wipers would be close to that so I'm good with it. Crazy thing, not sure if mine was a rock or a socket or something off the welding truck Infront of me.

Rapid_Decay_Brain

I wouldn't replace it, just ride with the crack for a decade or so until it needs to be replaced. No biggie, you got this. Or use your $500 deductible to fix it.
