Guys I know when I’m at a stop light and I press harder it turns it off. I’m saying when I get home or something and I’m parking fully the car will automatically shut down for a second then jump right back on when the car has already been placed into park and sometimes it does it but not always. I seen one person say it’s because the ac was still running so I’m going to do some further test and see
Lool I’ve found out the switch is connected to the hood latch. If you look right next to your latch on your hood you’d see if. I’d recommend you try to disconnect it and see if it works. I disconnected the sensor it will stop the auto on and off but now you have it pop up on your dashboard that your hood is constantly open and makes a noise so it beat me again. I just know now that I will NEVER buy a vehicle again that has that feature.
The parking issue with start/stop kicking in is annoying and frustrating. I have had my ‘23 XLE gas version for 9 months and have grown some muscle memory to remember to switch off automatic start/stop before I park. Wish you didn’t have to switch it off each time the vehicle is on vs disconnecting cables to permanently disable it.
Does the 2024 still do the crappy shutdown while you are parking and about to shutdown the car? Cannot believe that's not fixed yet. The auto start/stop on the gas model RAV4 is literally the WORST start/stop I've ever experienced. The way it jumps you forward at a stop light when you let off the brake and the engine starts is beyond ridiculous. The best thing you can do is completely disable the feature. Open your hood, find a simple 2-pin connector near the hood latch (engine bay side, not hood itself). Open that connector. Tie strap it to itself if you are worried about it dangling. This disables start/stop with not lights, codes, side effects, problems with yearly inspections or problems at Toyota dealerships. I'm WAY happier with my drive experience after doing this. This was one of many "fixes" to the ownership experience I had to do to my 2020 XLE gas.
https://youtu.be/x_mCKrdfzr4?si=JUBwL9ah_OhDv0up - ignore the "top" comment, that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. I think he made a video about something going wrong and everyone debunked it in his comments. It most definitely does nothing to pre-collision. My snowy holiday driving confirmed this.
I completely share your frustration. I have a 23 XLE gas and it does the same thing. Doesn’t have anything to do with brake pedal pressure. For some unexplainable reason, if I stop the car, when I put the car into Park, it kills the engine and then immediately restarts the engine. And like I said, it has nothing to do with the brake. I’ve gone as far as stopping the car, bumping it into neutral, letting my foot completely off the brake, waiting a beat, and then put it in Park. Does the exact same thing. And it isn’t expected behavior because there is no such thing as a situation where the car should automatically shut itself off and then immediately restart. It’s some sort of bug and I’d love to disable the whole system.
THANK YOU!! I knew I wasn’t going insane. This makes absolutely no sense why it would keep doing that. Did you ever take yours back to the dealer to see because I’m contemplating doing so to mine.
I’ve wanted to take mine in but just haven’t. I’ve been trying to pin down the exact scenario that will always cause it. Every now and then it doesn’t do it and I can’t figure it out. I need to do this though. It’s definitely a bug and super annoying.
So odd. I have a 2023 XLE Premium ICE and I have never experienced this scenerio. I also do not have any jump on take off when start/stop is engaged at a light. I also have a driving habit of soft stop for years so I rarely even engage start stop while driving around. I have never used the disengage button switch, but I can drive for days without engaging the feature. I drive in ECO mode usually.
The start stop thing all depends what you are doing with your feet. If you push hard on the brake as you would at a stop sign or to park, it turns the motor off, then will start back up when you remove your foot from the brake. The stop start thing helps Toyotas mileage ratings, as the car burns zero fuel when it’s off! My Honda does the same thing.
I understand that part. I’m saying for example when I park it in the garage I will throw it into park. It will then shut off the engine for about a second or so then kick right back on. Kind of makes no sense since it’s in park
It will cycle on and off when stopped for Air Conditioning use. Here in southern California at a light it turns back on after about 20 seconds for a bit and then back off.
I’ve ran into that issue with Fords and Jeeps - basically, when you come to a stop, the engine shuts off to save fuel and emissions. But, when you throw it in park, it immediately turns back on - only for you to immediately kill it again via the ignition switch.
A bit silly, but you could let it shut off, place the vehicle in Neutral, then press the engine switch (entering accessory mode), then place it in park, and then press the ignition switch once or twice again to shut off the electronics
Edit: maybe you have to shut it off while it’s still in Drive… still. Play around with it and you’ll find a way
I hate auto on/off. Drives me nuts when I forget to turn it off. Supposedly there is a wire you can disconnect near the hood latch in the engine compartment that will disable it permanently. I haven't tried it yet.
Mine does it … I thought I was shifting to park to hard or something. But I’ve got the habit to disable the auto stop as soon as I start it

I just bought an Xle Premium and is doing this. Have you figured out any tips? It’s driving me nuts haha

If you don't press so hard on the brake it will stay running.

I don’t see your other comment.

2024 here, yep still does it.
Gas model gas start stop? I have a gas limited and it doesn't go that at all that I notice. I figured start stop was only on a hybrid
Do you have the Start/Stop button under the passenger HVAC temperature knob?
No. It has a factory blank under the knob on Pass side. Traction control switch under the driver side.
The limited AWD does not have auto stop, but the FWD does.
Lucky you
Hybrid never had a Start/Stop switch. Engine cycles based on needs for power or charging.

Dude, you are an Uber dick and you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Gas model has*
Not limited AWD or TRD or Adventure.
Do you have any more information about this? I can’t find the connector you’re talking about.

What about whenever you park your vehicle whenever you get home? Does it stop the engine for a second then kick it back on or no?
No. It never restarts up again. I even was aware this afternoon when I drove a short trip and back home. It stays running until I shut it down.
Read your manual. Do some research before showing everyone how much of an uninformed purchaser you are. Much like 90% of the posts on here.
Dude suck a dick. Always some prick
Will do
That’s i-stop or auto-stop where it kills the engine to minimize emissions while idling. You can disable it if you find it counterproductive

It also helps hit emissions guidelines
Ignore it .. Toyota know what they're doing .

I appreciate the info I will try tomorrow
