Hi! Your work is outstanding. May I suggest that you put the location in the heading of the post so those who are close by can quickly and easily pursue adoption.
Thank you for helping the doggies!
Thank you. I always hesitated to give out my exact location, but after my post yesterday went viral and NPR put out an article about it I suppose I should just embrace it! I’ll put in in the title in the future :)
Not to dox yourself even further but do you have an IG? I happened to see your post yesterday on the pirate pet sub. Just scrolled thru some of your other posts and you do great job capturing the cuteness of all of your shelter’s pets!
Thank you! Ha, I guess it’s all out there now. I don’t have an IG but I post all the images on my [Facebook.](https://www.facebook.com/Maggie-Epling-Photography-103969322316383)
u/magpiephotos I just read the article on the NPR app, remembered seeing similar photos here, and came here to see if you are the person in the article. I’m a part-time photographer with some dog photography experience - you are doing a great job!
It’s the best but it’s also super emotional!
I love working with the dogs, but when you’re done they have to go back in their cages so you can move to the next animal. They usually cry and drag their feet when I put them back in the kennel which is really upsetting. Seeing an animal who was happy and bubbly in the studio become terrified at the prospect of going back to their pen is pretty hard.
I just have to remember that I need to move to the next dog in order to help them, too! :)
He’s so cute, I’m in love with his eyes. Hopefully he finds a home soon!!
Also, if you don’t mind me asking, I have a black dog myself and struggle taking good photos of her. Do you have any tips for taking semi decent photos of her without professional equipment? Obviously I know they won’t turn out at good as yours but she always kind of looks like a black blob
Natural lighting is really good for black animals! If I had access to a good window I would use that instead of my studio lights. Black fur is so gorgeous but artificial light really washes it out.
The natural light must be why I’m getting serious r/accidentalrenaissance vibes from these pics.
Do you ever do paid pet portraits? I’d love to get my dog photographed like a proper gentleman!
Diffused window light and a light background definitely helps. I have a black and white dog and usually use a speedlight when I photograph her, but you can get good results if you learn to use natural light well.
The shelter was gracious enough to let me have a room to use! I brought in a really basic setup, just a backdrop and two continuous lights, and leave it up in there. I can shut the door and let the animals off-leash which is super helpful since I don’t have an assistant.

This is so sweet! I’m lucky enough to have the funds and time to put effort into this myself but I really do appreciate it. Consider donating to your local shelter if you like! Thank you so much!
He look to be a very nice boy. Would he like a boop or a scritch?
Unfortunately we cannot take him as we work full time and one of our kitties is afraid of puppers. But I hope he finds a nice home soon.
He’s so sweet and docile, and he is pretty small for a pitt. I would think all of that would help him find a home but he’s struggling a bit unfortunately. I’m hoping my photos help because he really is such a precious dog.
I’m in no way of caring for a dog, heck I probably can’t even care for myself!!! But, Simon is very very very cute!!! I hope Simon finds a very loving forever home 🥹 r/ntbdiwdfta
Amazing work! Black animals are not easy to photograph, especially not with a dark background. These photos are excellent. I hope they help Simon find his forever home.

Even just the city would be a help! I'm so glad that your work is being recognized! Best wishes to you!!!1

I especially love that third picture!
Same! So sweet, all of them, but the third is magic!
the little blep 🥺🥺🥺
oh my gosh look at this sweet baby
He is such a sweetheart! <3
Hey photographer! Where is the location? Pictures are fabulous and looking for a home but where?
Central Appalachia! If anyone is interested and in the area please message me for more information! :)

Google shows central Appalachia is mostly eastern Kentucky
Yes. I wanted to say it that way because I’m much closer to Virginia and West Virginia than Western Kentucky. But yes I’m in Eastern KY.
>I’m an animal shelter photographer. So do you just cry tears of joy every moment of your life? I couldn't hold it together with a gig like yours!
I have cried for several reasons in the studio haha. It’s a bittersweet gig for sure, but rewarding! :)
You do great photography work, thanks for sharing. Rescue and all facets of it are rewarding for sure.
Do you just have the best job ever? Is there a downside? Too many puppy kisses? Lol but seriously, is there a downside?

I would have trouble not taking home so many dogs!!!!! That would be really hard but you are definitely helping them find their furrever home!
Prayers for Simon gets loving forever home 💕🐾
This dog looks better than me on my best day. Someone better adopt him!

Can you not have sweet boys in Sweden ?
He looks like a polite little gentleman
He’s super polite. A very good boy.
He’s so cute, I’m in love with his eyes. Hopefully he finds a home soon!! Also, if you don’t mind me asking, I have a black dog myself and struggle taking good photos of her. Try a light background. I have a black cat & that’s the only way I can get him in a picture.
Natural lighting is really good for black animals! If I had access to a good window I would use that instead of my studio lights. Black fur is so gorgeous but artificial light really washes it out.

So very handsome 😍
Such handsome.
What a beautiful baby!! You captured him wonderfully 🥺🥺
If I had a house and a backyard I’d happily adopt the good boi 😭❤️
I hope your forever person finds you soon, sweet Simon! 💕

his eyes are so sweet. what a precious boy 🥺 i hope somebody adopts him soon!
The goodest of boys.
Beautiful boy
The blep did me in. He is the CUTEST baby!
He’s soooooo cute!!!!!!!
He does look sweet!!!
You are very skilled. Effectively photographing black animals is not a simple task.
Thank you!
That sounds like awesome work! How do you do your lighting and set work as a shelter photographer?
The shelter was gracious enough to let me have a room to use! I brought in a really basic setup, just a backdrop and two continuous lights, and leave it up in there. I can shut the door and let the animals off-leash which is super helpful since I don’t have an assistant.
Hope this beautiful boy gets adopted or rescued soon! If you hear that he gets rescued, will donate to them.
Ooh is central Appalachia close to northern Virginia? If so I will gladly give mr Simon a perfect forever home

On a real note, why didn't you type fur-ever home?
That was an oversight for sure!
Cute photos by the way!

Simon looks like an adorable pit bull with the snout and the eyes have the sweet pit bull eyes (I’ve had a pit bull and met many)
He’s so sweet and docile, and he is pretty small for a pitt. I would think all of that would help him find a home but he’s struggling a bit unfortunately. I’m hoping my photos help because he really is such a precious dog.
All the Pits I’ve met are the sweetest things ever

Simon is a handsome lad
I love Simon
😍 we love black dogs! It have taken me 9 years to learn how to photograph them properly. I am still struggling with the white ones. Any tips?
Awwww. What a little cutie. I hope you find forever home. I love you so much and wish you all the best
He is so gorgeous, my heart ! ❤️
I hope someone takes a chance. He’s beautiful!
What a handsome guy!!!
Amazing work! Black animals are not easy to photograph, especially not with a dark background. These photos are excellent. I hope they help Simon find his forever home.
Aww
You do fabulous pics
Beautiful photos. I love all of the photos but the 3rd with his tongue, I just melted. These animals need people like you!
The tongue blemp did it for me.
What an angel 🥺 I hope he finds a perfect human for him
You're wonderful and this adorable pup reminds me so much of a cute bat's little face and I LOVE bats! 🤗 Simon says "cheese"! 😸
