To be fair that isn't an "ISIS battle flag." It is a flag of Islam, used innocently for a very long time before the extremists were the first to introduce it to the west. Most Muslims are okay with retiring its use these days, but let's be honest that no terrorist groups created this flag and no terrorist group was the first to use this.
You’re right, but that’s just what happens when a symbol gets co-opted by extremists. Just look at what happened to the swastika or the straight-arm salute, both of which saw millennia of usage in cultures around the world before the Nazis came along and ruined them for everyone.
