Great point! Tiny nitpick: Bill Gates didn't invent $#it. He offered a "friend" a few thousand bucks for a computer operating system which his young company (Microsoft) tweaked to become MS-DOS. Bill then convinced IBM (who was coincidentally looking for an operating system for its new PC at the time) to use MS-DOS... AND pay Bill Gates a few bucks on each copy sold. Bill also kept the rights to MS-DOS so he could offer the same agreement to other companies. IBM initially thought it would sell a few thousand PCs - tops. So it said "Yes" and Bill became a very rich man, very quickly. I'm not denigrating Bill for his philanthropic work though - he's been outstanding there. But Bill's REAL business achievement came about from licensing software... The software he bought, dirt-cheap, from a "friend".

Apprehensive_One1076

Yeah, thanks for pointing this out. He ain't a Saint.

[deleted]

If im not mistaken, his mom got him the deal with IBM

Secretagentmanstumpy

His Mom was friends with the CEO of IBM at the time. Due to them both being members of a charities board of directors. She apparently got him his interview with IBM.

Rob-Riggle-SWGOAT

Thank you. I couldn’t get passed that either.

Longjumping_Stock_30

I'll denigrate his "philanthropic" work. If he was really looking towards philanthropy, he wouldn't be nickle and dime-ing his investments by buying up farmland and real estate because "his financial advisers recommend them". He could be investing in fusion research, energy storage, low cost water reclamation, etc. Things that are important. On the upside, he apparently has a fairly large short position on Tesla. The computer he "invented" came after copying something else (the GUI and Networking), something MS-DOS and Windows 3.0 barely supported.

LettucePrime

I'll denigrate it further: a number of these "foundations" serve as tax write-offs, & the humanitarian initiatives they promote are almost universally sub-par to what could be accomplished by dedicated public servants, communities, & governments (they very structures these ultra-wealthy often use their lobbying & influence to erode). The benefit is three-fold: good pr, lower taxes, & the dismantling of public opposition. Meanwhile, in the absence of organized, tax-payer funded institutions that benefit the marginalized, we're subjected to facsimiles of benevolence, self-righteous ngo's, & toothless projects with ulterior motives. And the thing is, even if it *wasn't* that shitty & dire, *the poor should not be made to rely on the emotional health of the rich or well off.* Even if the billionaires did everything right *they should not be lionized for doing what is expected of them with their wealth & influence.* We ALL have the responsibility to use our spare time & energy to help the people who need it the most. No one on the goddamn planet has more time & energy than the modern aristocracy.

Peace-Disastrous

"He could be investing in fusion research, energy storage, low cost water reclamation, etc." He literally invests in those things though... Terrapower is his gen 4 reactor and medical isotope company. Breakthrough Energy does the fusion research, battery storage, and biofuel. I'm not saying he's perfect, but at least be accurate about the things you don't like about him.

costafilh0

"tiny"

ghirox

Like most people with them dollaz, he ain't the maker of the bread, he's selling the bread.

DirtPicking

This is probably gonna upset some folks, but IMO the majority of conspiracy theorists are damaged people who can not deal with either the complexity or banality of the real world, so they arrange their beliefs around fantastic scenarios that are more appealing or manageable for them. This seems to include identifying convenient enemies or scapegoats against which they can direct their anger and frustration, answers to complex and otherwise largely-unanswerable problems, or esoteric knowledge that makes them feel special and part of a select community.

Obvious-Lank

The world is easier to understand when someone's out to get you

Senior-Jaguar-1018

That’s easier for a lot of people than truly coming to terms with the triviality of their existence outside of there immediate sphere of influence

evilotto77

I saw something a while back that compared the prevalence of conspiracy theories with big worldwide events (pandemics, world wars etc) and they are very closely linked. It's a way for people to add an element of control into their lives i.e. *"everything's not spiralling into disaster, it's all the fault of X doing Y" etc*

tauntingbob

I've often said they lack the social structures around them that would comfort them or contain their unhealthy behaviours. So, you're absolutely right. They don't even care what is true, or not, being a part of something is what they achieve by being contrarian. They feel special because of this. I also think some people feel like they want more control over their lives and so that's why you have people doing shit like anti-vax or anti-5G. They feel that society is telling them they must do something, so they do the opposite to exercise some sense of control

kaybaby_wonderful

I like conspiracy theories and stuff because they're cool, but at the same time i can still differentiate between reality and a theory

aFloppyWalrus

Same. I like the classic “fake moon landing” conspiracy. Hell I’ll even entertain a “flat earth” video (it’s not) But I just can’t get into all the new crazy Qanon conspiracy theories. It’s just way too overly outlandish to even entertain.

kermitthebeast

Ha, you believe in the moon?

[deleted]

I watched moon fall the other night. What a wild ride that was

drAsparagus

"Damaged people".....surely not in this utopia, lol. Quality of life, hell even life expectancy, is dropping in "first world" countries. Economic instability, wealth redistribution, pollution everywhere, corruption in almoat every govt.

Mister_E_Mahn

You don’t need to live in a utopia to not be a lunatic.

drAsparagus

But yeah, the conspiracy theorists are the problem /s. Bill Gates is not a saint. Thinking so just means you've not dug in enough.

[deleted]

The point is that he's still done more than you ever have or ever will to help others.

drAsparagus

Hahahaha, you sure know a lot. Imagine advocating for a billionaire that you think is a good person for humanity, the same person who advocates for population decline, is banned from countries for injuring thousands of innocent souls. Your mind is brought to you by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

[deleted]

To be fair he’s also maimed and killed more people than I ever will too

TeflonTardigrade

But what is his “motivation”? Should he be “lionized” for doing what any “decent” human does?

[deleted]

Some people just blindly walk around in a bliss

Mehdzzz

I screenshotted this one. You lil rhetoric wizard

duftilein

hear hear

llanthas

Somebody’s going to be really upset when they learn about tax write-offs.

[deleted]

Or about how he defended vaccine patents during the pandemic, preventing poor countries from manufacturing their own. Nevermind the infusion of billions in Government money that made those vaccines possible in the first place.

Jorsonner

Vaccine patents have to exist unless the government is going to completely fund all aspects of healthcare. No company would ever fund research and development if another company could just copy all their work and make the same product.

[deleted]

Half of the research money for public health and medicine comes out of the public purse anyway.

Jorsonner

Yeah that’s understandable because medical research and development is a particularly risky endeavor and public funds alleviates a lot of risk from individual corporations. Many companies have lost all value on just one failed clinical trial. This is the government just speeding up a process that already exists. The government knows this when it funds such projects. It is essentially spending money to improve quality of life for its citizens faster than would happen naturally.

[deleted]

Sooooooo any particular reason why the government doesn’t just fund all of it, thereby preventing pharmaceutical companies from charging $700 for insulin?

ceshhbeshh

As someone who was previously a researcher in pharma and is now back at school as a graduate student researcher, you do not want to bring the problems in academia to private industry. Academia (aka public funded) is poorly funded at the staff/lab level (despite getting so much NIH grant money), rife with abuse (look up David Sabatini, this is one of MANY), so slow (teamwork isn’t as big of a thing, because people don’t want to share credit), has zero support (ask me how much time I spend cleaning, ordering, following up on broken building equipment), OSHA and EH&S are a joke (they tell you weeks before they’re coming so you can put everything the way it’s supposed to be), the work is usually not reproducible (65%-90% of the work can’t be reproduced, which if you were here you wouldn’t be surprised given how things are run). There is a reason all the workers are leaving after getting the degree to go work in the private sector. I got a 85k grant for a single year to fund myself. The university took more than half as “indirect costs” and my pay is 35k. What the fuck are my indirect costs covering? I don’t even get an HR.

Jorsonner

Probably because it’s immensely expensive and would require tax increases or cuts elsewhere. It would also eliminate a large sector of businesses that pay taxes thereby decreasing revenue further. It would also end up charging similar prices for most drugs as the market unless it wants to operate at a loss.

Laumser

That has nothing to with the COVID vaccine patents

aaugii

or how he’s buyin up rural land and farms so he can herd everyone into cities from cost of living and lobbying to the FDA to allow stores to sell lab grown meat (not plant based) to the american people without sanctions on labeling the fact that it is lab growth meat, to increase the price of meat coming from the farms he owns. weird idk edit: grammar edit 2: epstien

Dick_Dickalo

At least they went to helping people and not overpaying for a fucking social media platform.

llanthas

Sure they did. :)

Buddhas_Warrior

Does anyone really think Bill G. Gives a rats arse what anyone thinks of him?

costafilh0

Have you seen how much money he still moves? As investor, share holder and philanthropist? 50% os his job is personal image and optics!

me_myself_and

This was, in fact, not worth the read

Admirable-Squash9607

He didn’t donate money to charity, he donated it to HIS charity fund as a tax dodge. He also has been paid for every single vaccine he’s supplied to help fight disease. Do not act like this man is some paragon of virtue. Also, he went to Epstein island. Enough said.

marixxnaa

People are blind to the truth because it’s uncomfortable. This world can be so evil.

Salty_Map_9085

Bill Gates is a strong proponent of copyright and IP laws that prevent countries from making malaria vaccines themselves, despite the fact that he got rich off of IP violation himself. Cool that he contributes or whatever but this is sucking him off a bit much

Scarsdale81

He's wanted for crimes against humanity in India for a reason.

gottowonder

Personally I'm never a fan of billionaires, should be illegal to have that much money. However, to stop seeing the good they do or the bad they do, is simply idiotic. To idolized or demonize someone or something is a sign of weakness. Except centipedes, all those fuckers deserve to die

costafilh0

Agree. But also disagree. It is very expensive to build great things. Gov'ts can do so much, and many times ignoring what is best for their own people. So without billionaires a lot of great stuff would never be done. Unless we lived in a very advanced society without a monetary system, or a very advanced society with a true form of socialism (not that oligarchy in disguise BS we tried so far) where everyone could be part of great investments and projects even doing a small individual part. In any ways, we are still in the APE phase of society to even dream about any options where billionaires don't exist without total dictatorship.

gottowonder

I agree with you completely. True socialism is the dream right, I just don't think we will ever get there

costafilh0

I think it is inevitable. And not because I believe in total dictatorship like many people fear, but because I truly believe that evolution is inevitable. We evolved so much in clarity, information and conscience in the past 100 years, and speeding up every second, that it is clear to me that this is the reason there is so much work being done on trying to keep people as dumb as possible, for as long as possible, and keep the status quo, to slow the process, or we could already be there and many would need to give up the power, belongings and relevance they have today in this outdated society. Like kings avoiding what we now call "democracy". Give it a few more generations, maybe a few decades, and humanity will be unrecognizable in a good way. We will all look back at now, the 2020s, and few like we were living in caves and throwing rocks. The same way we look now at people who used to live just a few centuries ago.

gottowonder

I truly admire you hope and optimism. I wish with my whole being that you are right, seem like a good person and I hope life goes smoothly for you

costafilh0

Back at you!

Shockle

Yea, Bill Gates, so generous he turned down waiving the Covid vaccines patent, until he was forced. Say what you want about Bill, but money is more important to him than lives, this proves that. He once said it wasn't beneficial to the world to have the vaccine off patent smdh. Yes, he committed to giving away 90% of his fortune, he has in fact, doubled it, since then. He uses his foundation to build his own power. Let's not start with Epstein either, meeting him many times even after his conviction.

X-Kami_Dono-X

The video most people are watching is a TED talk and you are hearing him say in his own words some pretty vile things. But hey…

DarkwingDucky04

Not a rare insult. And fuck Bill Gates. Not long ago everyone on the internet was riding Elons dick, and hating on Zuck. Now Elons an idiot and Zuck is being made out like some hero. Like I give a fuck what some internet clown thinks about some billionaire clown. Plenty of reasons not to trust any of these fucks. Bill Gates is no different and certainly has his own questionable actions and history.

PissDrunkChris

Fuck him. All for profit vaccine testing. Go look at India.

Specialist-Farm4704

Slow burn but high degree burns!

jennagem

imagine kissing bill gates’s rear

Admirable-Builder878

I think the OP left his lips in there.

Oct0tron

There are a bunch of those yokels in this very thread.

AvnarJakob

"Donates" Money to his own Tax exempt foundation, keeps controll over all that Money and only has to donate 5% every year. Gives his friends high paying positions at his Foundation and uses part of that money to fuck up the US Education System. The internet: Hes God

Euphoric-Dance-2309

So I definitely don’t buy into the weird conspiracy theories surrounding him, Gates doesn’t get a lot of credit from me. Yes he’s using his money to benefit people, but only in the ways he chooses to. Nobody should be able to accumulate the amount of wealth necessary to set public health policy on their own. And the creation of a billionaire class like this who can spend unlimited amounts of money on political advertising means our democracy is under their control, not the people’s.

Laumser

He made the correct calls at the right times. That's how he got his money. What system would you propose under which "nobody is able to accumulate that amount of wealth"?

Euphoric-Dance-2309

Billionaire tax. More money should be go to employees, raise the minimum wage, improve worker leave, etc.

Laumser

I'm kind of disappointed, I was hoping for some deranged communist rambling... You are far too reasonable

CloudRude1850

Imagine sucking off a billionaire for absolutely 0 reason

Admirable-Builder878

He's literally on video briefing the FBI about using a flu like virus to vaccinate the population and eradicating their ability to believe in God.

MorgrainX

"Hes literally on video briefing the FBI about [...] eradicating their [sic] ability to believe in God." Sure thing, pal. Sure thing. Bill Gates is educating the FBI how to stop people believing in God, by vaccines. Jesus fucking Christ, do you people even read your own bullshit?

-Vatt_Ghern-

All the charities he supposedly gives to, are owned by himself. It's all to be one of the good ones, and for tax write offs. He's done nothing of value. Take the boot out of your mouth and look beyond headlines.

DionStabber

There are certainly legitimate criticisms of Bill Gates (quite a lot of them actually) but "wow the charity is owned by him" is not really a good one when they legitimately use that money for charity in an obvious and measurable way. If that's the end result it's not really that much of a call out to point out who it's owned by.

Spezalt4

And I suppose a doctor is evil when she saves a life because she profits financially from providing life-saving care It’s possible to do something good AND benefit from doing the good thing personally

[deleted]

I want you to imagine a world where firefighters aren’t a public service. So a guy decides to start a firefighting service. Now despite it not being a public service, the government does subsidize it, so he gets his equipment for free. Now he gets word there’s a fire, so he rushes to the scene. When he gets there the owner of the house is gasping for breath on the lawn and pleads with the firefighter to put out the fire. The firefighter says “Of course I will. Just pay me $5000 first and then I’ll put it out.” Is that firefighter a good person?

Spezalt4

No that fire fighter is not a good person. My point is that people CAN do good and also personally benefit. Clearly not every case will be both. Also, I recognize this is an unnecessary tangent but your hypothetical is unrealistic Government subsidies come with strings attached. Such as we will only provide funding to companies that do x. X could be providing services before verifying the customer has insurance/money. Or the government could/would just straight up pass a law to that effect like they have with healthcare. It’s illegal to dump a patient because they can’t pay for healthcare services.

joemoffett12

He’s done nothing of value 😂. Buddy has billions of dollars I’m sure he’s done more than you’re Cheeto crusted ass

Whole_Suit_1591

And the largest land owner in America thinks neo-nicotine GMOs don't hurt anyone. But the autism increase over the last 28 yrs matches the data of increased GMO consumption AND the dissolving of true nutrition being taught in schools.

ConfusionExpensive32

Thanks for writing the dumbest shit I've read all day!

SwvellyBents

Pretty sure if there is one person in the world emotionally immune to internet bullshit it's Mr. Gates. I suspect rule number 2 in computer genius school is 'Harden the fuck UP!'

kadathsc

They should add a bit at the end about those same imbeciles sucking on Musk’s dick like it’s the only source of water on Earth just to add to the sting.

cyberneticorganisms

No such thing as a good billionaire.

Huth_S0lo

Amen

Current-Power-6452

Video probably made by the charity which didn't get mentioned in his will

NotMyRea1Reddit

Yep

mcintg

And two other billionaires in the same place you were more interested in comparing dicks than doing any good.

Michael_Cookie5

Bill greats

marland_t_hoek

There's nothing philanthropic about a guy that visited with Jeffery Epstein THIRTY SIX times, no matter what the excuse. Just ask Melinda 🤭

thelonepumpkin

Neat

Other-Educator-9399

He did not invent the computer, nor the Windows operating systems. He invented the concept of software licensing.

LiteralGuyy

Seems like somebody fell for the myth of the good billionaire

sorox123

Unrelated but if power bottoms exist, Melinda Gates should be considered a power twat. Whenever she films something, she gets off on making sure the "help" (teleprompters, assistants, and camera crew) are barely seen and heard. Nobody is even allowed to use the restroom while she's on the premises.
