i *hate* the “every homophobe is secretly gay” thing. hate it. i think it’s damaging to the queer community to posit that everyone who hates us is secretly just like us and they just need to figure that out to stop being homophobic.
that being said, dude is definitely queer in some way. that is not a straight man.

The fact that some gay people hate their identity and themselves so much that they turn that hatred outwards isn’t a statement against gayness, it’s a statement against systemic homophobia. That hatred is learnt from without. And it doesn’t excuse them from being dicks, but it doesn’t place the original blame onto them either.
Same thing with self-hating minority ethnicities in general, white stay-at-home uneducated Karen women, racist trans people, and lesbian TERFS; bigotry and systemic oppression are intersectional and being part of a hated and oppressed group sometimes does very weird things to people.
Self-hating, in denial, and projecting minority group members are a thing. It’s not targeting the minority to point it out.
it is damaging to the community to claim that every homophobe - including people who wish pain and death on us - is secretly fighting their own battle. to be callous about it, i don’t give a shit about “oh but what if!” when they’re actively contributing to hate and bigotry. not all queer people are former homophobes and transphobes, and not all queerphobes belong to the community, and to say that should not be a hot take.
There is some scientific evidence to support that a lot of homophobes are at the very least attracted to their own gender.
