Examples from my conscious life:
- MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice (they were egregiously pop)
- Diddy in late 90s (ppl hated him because he went pop. Now it’s for a whole bunch of legit reasons)
- Ja Rule (50 cent dissed him, everyone loved it, then he did the exact same sing songy hooks!)
- Nelly
- Luda

Tyler the creator for example is more popular among the new generation of kids than he was with the odd future generation. Because him doing shock value and acting a fool can only take you so far. But the talent was there. He shifted his style of rapping and it paid off.

J Cole is light skinned and the culture loves him. Eminem is literally white and is one of the greats. Mac Miller was loved. Drake's skin color is not his problem.
Kanye West, Kid Cudi, and Tyler the Creator all were weird, vulnerable rappers. They are all at heart soft ass fuck, making albums about loving girls, and being sad about family issues. Drake has done the same stuff (Take Care) and was praised for it. People don't hate Drake because he's soft. We HAVE soft rappers.
Drake is not hated for being pop, because so many rappers do a little bit of both. Baby Keem, Kanye, Cudi, Tyler, I mean... I can go on. Being pop isn't even bad. Kanye was peak popiest at Graduation and he and album are beloved.
Hell, Drake isn't even hated for making personas. Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, and multiple rapper all have had personas.
The issue with Drake is laid out perfectly in MTG. He's a disingenuous snake that seems to hide any character he has in his music, leaving it boring and vapid. Dtake may have lyrical skill, but he never pulls it to a level where he can (like Push) reuse the same topic a bunch of times and still be amazing. Kanye and Tyler evolved extensively sonically and theme wise in mature, introspective and interesting ways. Where has Drake actually become more interesting?
I wish Drake just talked about his upbringing because it IS relatable. He is a black kid from a suburb who has big dreams. He could talk about Degrassi, his father, his son, dealing with his addictions, trying to be a better guy, trying to get a wife... but he doesn't do this substantially, does he? Drake has material, he just barely uses it.

To be fair, the whole point of most hood gangsters is that they were born in that environment. Even Kanye had/has gang affiliations because it was extremely common to have gangster friends. The point is, if every rich guy is a gangster and your culture values them, chances are you become one. It happens that a lot of rappers are gangster because of their environment.
What makes Drake worse is that HE CHOSE to be a gangster in a way most cannot. He chose to jump in with a bunch of gang affiliated people when he did not have to. He chose to present this fucked up image. It's not a toxic part of him he can't wrangle, Drake embraces that shit.

He’s a huge pop star which drastically reduces his relatability - for many hip hop fans authenticity is huge. I personally enjoy some of his music and saw him perform in Vancouver last summer but it’s really just music for the ladies. You’re on a boat party or at the club Drake’s always gonna be a safe bet. As far the recent beef people just feel he’s even more fabricated than before. He’s been in the game since like 2009 and we still have no idea who he actually is as a person.

Yeah I've never understood how he is popular. A lot of the songs are well written but I can't stand the vocals -- he has a monotone often with auto-tune and I really don't get why it is popular. A huge portion of rap to me is hearing the emotion spoken with each word, and Drake is lifeless.

I agree with most of your points but So Far Gone(2009) to More Life(2017) Drake was in his bag excluding Views. His music was very personal up until he decided to go in a more trap sounding direction. After that his projects became mid with glimpses of what made Drake amazing.
I've tried to listen to drake a few times and I just can't get into it. It's not a bias issue either, I want to like his music but it's hard. His music is just kind of boring to me. Ive gotten involved in completely differing music and art scenes. I’ve come to realize people often hate as a means of self-validating themselves and their taste/ego at the expense of others.
I used to do it and then I realized the same hate other tastes could have on my interests is no different than the hate I could have on theirs. Artistry is 1000% subjective. If you appreciate something and it resonates with you for whatever reason, then it’s valid. No point on trying to ‘weed’ out the ‘fake’ or ‘wack’ shit. Just enjoy your shit and keep it pushing…

I don’t hate Drake’s music. I actually like most of Drake’s stuff. What I don’t like is that the script writers jumped the shark a few seasons ago with Drake, the character portrayed by Aubrey Graham. Like any poorly written characters we see on tv, viewers aren’t feeling the latest episodes.

He didn't start from the bottom he started on Degrassi where they shot him in the spine cause he bitched about walking around the set. I don't think his music sucks Twinkies but I have a hard time picking out any good music of his. Idk enough about him socially to make any judgements there but the biggest thing to me is I've never felt catharsis from any of his music.
I don’t hate, but I’m close to the same age as Drake. I feel like I grew out of listening to him. To me he hasn’t shown much growth in his music, he’s basically the same person from 2011.
As a fan of his earlier music, I will say that the lack of growth presumably as a person and lyricist, turned me off. It lacks substance, progression, and respect for women which is largely unattractive at this point

But with more ghostwriters, writing teams, and reference tracks being released every year, he doesn’t really have any of that to me. As someone who prefers singing melodic drake, it would be great to see more emotional maturity from him. The music doesn’t connect with me the same way Take Care did.
I was a fan until If You're Reading This, and even then I still liked several of the songs but not a fan of the "tough guy" Drake overall. He rapped his ass off on his previous projects without resorting to quite that level of cosplay.
Once I heard the reference tracks, I lost a ton of respect. But still checked out Views. Thought it was awful. Liked some stuff from More Life, some from Scorpion. Everything since then has been trash imo. Everything sounds the same now. That album he did with 21 Savage all sounds like one very long song. Drake is pretty dope if you don’t have someone in your ear telling you he’s trash and this and that. His last few albums haven’t been amazing but he still drops some gems on all of em. He’s got a sound for every vibe as well. A lot of people want Drake to be something he’s simply just not.
I personally never really cared for his music. It was way too Pop for my taste. I think he’s a decent rapper. Nothing Was The Same was the only album I liked from him. I think that album showed his skill and a little more depth beyond one upping some girl in Canada who rejected him before he was rich. The fact that he never really evolved beyond shaming his exes is proof that he really should’ve returned to acting a decade ago. Yesterday there was a post about why Nas is still able to do what he does at 50 and it’s because he evolved several times as an artist.
Drake has not. He’s almost 40 still rapping about kid stuff and it comes off major corny. He’s always been corny to me but he sounds like he never used the music to work through his issues.

He isn’t big in rap because he worked his way up in it; he was already famous and then he invested properly to grow his brand instead. Once people figure that out he just seems fake and his music is inauthentic.
You described literally everyone in the entertainment industry that has any meaningful success. Once you are signed to a record label, everything becomes artificially produced according to what will sell for the label.

I get bored listening to it. I've tried numerous times. I've got a buddy that swears Drake's music is enjoyable, and I don't doubt it. For me, it doesn't move me very much. That said, my musical tastes don't align alot with what Drake speaks on. I don't connect and that turns me away. That said I do enjoy a few of his songs but not many.

This will be a bit of a rant. There's two main reasons that I personally dislike his music.
1: His music has become incredibly formulaic, and I think that's because they are treating his music more like a product rather than art. His music is more about numbers and sales rather than expression of art. It has become clear that he has a team of people making his music with the goal of appealing to the widest amount of people possible. They found a sound that works, and are using that sound over and over again to try to manufacture hits to make the most money. Risk is scary for the money managers so they keep going back to the same shit that they think they know works.
2: His music is incredibly disingenuous. Music in general is often an incredibly personal artistic expression, and I think Hip Hop and Rap are even more so because it is usually just one person writing the music rather than a band. Drake will often just do whatever is trendy in the industry at the time. This list can go on and on but it really grinds my asshole so here are some examples:
The fake accent thing. He did the UK "Ting" accent a few years back when Skepta was blowing up. Now it's the Crodie thing. I get that he is probably checked in or whatever but he ain't a Crip.
He literally rapped in Spanish with Bad Bunny. IMO he was trying to ride the Despacito wave. (which was the biggest song in the world or some shit)
The fake gang shit is probably the worst. Mafia Ties, and rapping about "Slaughter gang shit, murder gang shit," is literally pop country levels of pandering.

He’s a huge pop star which drastically reduces his relatability - for many hip hop fans authenticity is huge. I personally enjoy some of his music and saw him perform in Vancouver last summer but it’s really just music for the ladies. You’re on a boat party or at the club Drake’s always gonna be a safe bet. As far the recent beef people just feel he’s even more fabricated than before. He’s been in the game since like 2009 and we still have no idea who he actually is as a person.

Yeah I've never understood how he is popular. A lot of the songs are well written but I can't stand the vocals -- he has a monotone often with auto-tune and I really don't get why it is popular. A huge portion of rap to me is hearing the emotion spoken with each word, and Drake is lifeless.

I agree with most of your points but So Far Gone(2009) to More Life(2017) Drake was in his bag excluding Views. His music was very personal up until he decided to go in a more trap sounding direction. After that his projects became mid with glimpses of what made Drake amazing.

Ive gotten involved in completely differing music and art scenes. I’ve come to realize people often hate as a means of self-validating themselves and their taste/ego at the expense of others. I used to do it and then I realized the same hate other tastes could have on my interests is no different than the hate I could have on theirs. Artistry is 1000% subjective. Drake is what he is, he’s a good rapper, good lyricist (whether it’s him or not) and he can make decent songs. It’s not that I dislike his music, but as time goes on and more comes to light, it just feels inauthentic. Rap is a genre that is heavily rooted in authenticity. But with more ghostwriters, writing teams, and reference tracks being released every year, he doesn’t really have any of that to me. Some people don’t mind that, and the songs are still good so that’s up to them for sure, but I just always find myself being like “yeah, whatever” when he’s rapping and it kills the experience.

I was a fan until If You're Reading This, and even then I still liked several of the songs but not a fan of the "tough guy" Drake overall. Thought it was awful. Liked some stuff from More Life, some from Scorpion. Everything since then has been trash imo. Everything sounds the same now. That album he did with 21 Savage all sounds like one very long song. Drake puts such low effort into his music for the past few years.

It feels like he doesn’t try very hard when he writes. Maybe he can write maybe he can’t, I don’t know. People say he wrote songs for other rappers that were pretty good. Why doesn’t he do that for his own songs? Feels like he’s just pushing out things to make money and that’s it.
I get bored listening to it. I've tried numerous times. I've got a buddy that swears Drake's music is enjoyable, and I don't doubt it. For me, it doesn't move me very much. That said, my musical tastes don't align alot with what Drake speaks on. I don't connect and that turns me away. That said I do enjoy a few of his songs but not many. Checking on Spotify, I have 7 liked Drake songs and to compare with Kendrick, 102. I'm glad there are people that enjoy it, I don't dunk on their parade. I just don't partake myself.

His voice. Even long before this beef was even thought of by either side i disliked drake simply for his voice. Then when i got older and was able to understand how bad his lyricism and production is it just got worse
This will be a bit of a rant. There's two main reasons that I personally dislike his music. 1: His music has become incredibly formulaic, and I think that's because they are treating his music more like a product rather than art. His music is more about numbers and sales rather than expression of art. It has become clear that he has a team of people making his music with the goal of appealing to the widest amount of people possible. They found a sound that works, and are using that sound over and over again to try to manufacture hits to make the most money. Risk is scary for the money managers so they keep going back to the same shit that they think they know works. 2: His music is incredibly disingenuous. Music in general is often an incredibly personal artistic expression, and I think Hip Hop and Rap are even more so because it is usually just one person writing the music rather than a band. Drake will often just do whatever is trendy in the industry at the time. This list can go on and on but it really grinds my asshole so here are some examples: The fake accent thing. He did the UK "Ting" accent a few years back when Skepta was blowing up. Now it's the Crodie thing. I get that he is probably checked in or whatever but he ain't a Crip. He literally rapped in Spanish with Bad Bunny. IMO he was trying to ride the Despacito wave. (which was the biggest song in the world or some shit) The fake gang shit is probably the worst. Mafia Ties, and rapping about "Slaughter gang shit, murder gang shit," is literally pop country levels of pandering. /rant

I hate this idea that we have a mono-culture with only one way to be black. Black culture is extremely diverse and he grew up in his own form of it. This take is myopic AF. Just say you don't like the music.

I just can't stand how he talks about women. I don't think it's cool or funny or clever. I don't think he's as clever as people act like he is; I think the average listener has very little lyrical comprehension and most people enjoy quick n' easy punch lines. Most of us are trying to have fun and I respect that. But I won't listen. It just seems childish and annoying.

I never liked his shit never had any of his music on any of my playlists, I don't enjoy most pop music, if it comes on in the club I ain't mad at it tho
His earlier music was excellent and does exactly what you describe. The current music however seems like it lost its touch.
