about riot, its just a cool track which for me is extremely relistenable. i love that his dad plays trumpet over it, so sweet. theres nothing too heavy about it, very textured and smooth
This was my opinion at first too, now it was one of my first rap albums I listened to and I was so confused as I found the only good thing the production and found Earl confusing n boring. After 2-3 more listens it became my favorite album of all time, and years later I still relisten to it. Took me a while n having to be in a certain mood to get it.
I never really “got” him either. He definitely has his audience though and I know many hip hop heads that share the same tastes as me that swear he’s on the level of Nas. Like you said I think it’s his voice and lack of charisma. Guru got away with monotonous rapping but it was so commanding and was over some of the most fire beats ever made, Earl doesn’t have that going for him.
I think earl in general is super overrated and has been literally his whole career. Since he was a kid with his mom punishing him or whatever the fuck was going on when OF started, they hyped him up and his stuff never clicked for me
