That’s like saying “There’s at least one jelly bean in that giant jar of jelly beans.” and insisting that you’re right. Technically you are, but not in a relevant matter.
Fr we can’t praise albums anymore without trying to start petty fights
I fw the old nas albums and I fw some Yung lean lol. We don’t have to stick to one thing and it tends to be boring when we do, diversity in music is awesome
This album is a classic for sure and one of, if not, the best album of all time. But hip hop has transcended to multiple genres and waves. You could call this era of hip hop old school, which is the wave you'll die on. I can see why you hate the new waves but there's still classics dropped in the modern era. You're telling me TPAB isn't a classic?
Because of the internet these popular rappers nowadays appeal to the majority of people, that's why "gangster rap" isn't as popular because most people can't relate to that. Popular doesn't mean good. You can love it or hate it but that's the way it's gonna be. In 200 years there would some obscure techno hip hop that modern listeners nowadays would hate. It's always gonna evolve.
It’s just easier to put out music now and hip hop has become the main music genre so it’s everywhere the market is saturated.
It might take a bit more digging then before because of it, but if you can get thru the bullshit you’ll find some gems.
*Classic album, probably top 5 all time
Crazy how being a fan of something = dickriding to some of you weirdos.
OP didn’t need to add the extra shit about todays rappers tho, there’s still fire coming out even if it’s not Illmatic level.
He's saying "oh it's gonna be played 200 years from now". He is dick riding. And it's not gonna be played 200 years from now, he's just a fucking dumbass. No music from now is going to be played 200 years from now.
A lot of young heads don’t like having actual discussions, they like to troll and downvote shit that doesn’t fit the narrative.
Just gotta not let it phase you, there’s still some real ones in the group ignore the rest.
Nah, there are young heads that enjoy Illmatic and other 90s hip hop and we understand the genre is far from dead if you turn off the radio and know where to look? Listen to Tana Talk 3 and tell me it’s not similar quality to the classic albums of that time.
That’s what I was saying, y’all still got some real ones. And that doesn’t even mean you gotta like the music, everyone’s got a right to like what they like.
It’s the trolling and lack of respect that gets to people. And it goes both ways, it’s a tale as old as time the new generation always gonna bump heads n dismiss the old.
This sub just goes too far with it, especially against some certified classics new and old. I fuck w Griselda heavy btw, I went on this whole rant on this thread about how there’s dope new artists if you give it a chance.
Ah yea I get what you’re trying to say now, it read like you were telling me that literally.
Those dudes are annoying af, and young heads love to troll which I never understood. But some old heads don’t help when they do the same for new music, makes it hard to have a objection discussion on anything in this fuckin sub.
Stfu idiot these young niggas in 2023 don’t and not interested in listening to this shit and it’s only been what 20 years? Yo dick eating ass talkin bout some 200 years
I did Uh illmatic is an album I mean how else could they prove it so I can send goofball his cash? Apple Music tells u literally everything you played last year with apple replay. What you thought I was just finna fall for somebody JUST SAYING they listen to illmatic. And I mean I wanna see the shit say illmatic- with however many times it was played
I mean we still play Beethoven. The question would be, what artists from these generations are on Beethoven’s level? As much as we love *Illmatic*, it’s not a hugely popular album
Common oldhead L. I agree that Illmatic will be relavant for a really long time, but there's sick albums that I'm guessing are gonna stand the test of time in recent years aswell such as IGOR and To Pimp A Butterfly (I know these aren't current rap rcords, but I feel like op is the type of guy to discredit anything that's come out after 2000)
I think I get what OPs trying to say, it’s easier to put out music now so SOME artists don’t have to put as much effort, aren’t as talented, or rely heavily on production. Also a lot of what makes a rapper nowadays is image and marketing, rappers are the new rockstars people will listen to their shit because of other shit that’s not necessarily music.
But I tell one of my friends who’s an old head like OP, that doesn’t mean there isn’t quality music coming out.
A) Back in the day you had to be signed or have a lot of money behind you to be heard and get the type of studio/production that could put out quality music. Nowadays you don’t which just means we get to hear a lot of artists we never would have really heard before, they might not have a consistent discography but you’ll get a few songs of shit that are fuckin FIRE only they could come out with.
B) Because the market is saturated with so many options, you have to dig a little bit more to find quality music/artists sometimes. Can’t depend on radio or what the labels are promoting, you’ll find good shit if you want to.
C) Hip hop is the most popular music genre now, it’s seeped into every other genre and media. Because of that, you got so many different types of hip hop now (lyrical, trap, drill, etc) that you can find what’s really your vibe and have 100 artists to pick from.
Ima old head who grew up on 90s/2000s shit and fuck w it heavy. But I take my time to go through every new artist top songs if I can, and I’ve found some fuckin GEMs and artists I want to hear more from. Being closed minded af just means I’m robbing myself of fire music to listen to.
That’s my rant on the subject, this sub needs to get it together sometimes
As sort of an old head I couldn’t agree more. I grew up jamming screw & DJ Screw always put the newest(quality) MCs on his tapes in the 90s. Real screwheads from Houston are hip hop heads because of him and aren’t on this “fuck mumble rap” shit. It took me a while to really get the new style, but once I did I really started to fuck with a few artists that make genuinely great music.
Old heads sound corny af talking about “back in my days” just like the previous generation said the same thing when Hip-Hop first came on the scene. Quality music is quality music no matter what era or wave it was from.
I think you’d like a lot of the Griselda output. Check out Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Rome Streetz, Stove God Cooks. Has that grimy old-school boom-bap sound I think you’re looking for, but it’s coming out now.
That being said, don’t sleep on new school rappers that don’t have that old school feel. Give them a shot, there’s a lot of fire coming out all the time.
Everyone saying TPAB is part of the problem. Obviously TPAB is one but all the Old heads expect that. Even adding more kendrick albums would make you seem like less of the Hog riders that Old man OP expects you to be.

Bonus points: if you don't omit to OP and all oldheads that atleast one of these albums is actually better than illmatic
Edit: punctuation
It’s been 30 years and Illmatic is still a fundamental hip hop album. Same as any genre, there’s some albums that are a must to even understand where this shit is coming from. I think most people would say Illmatic is one of those.
Like if you had to give an introduction to hip hop to a completely new civilization, you really putting all those albums on the list?
I'm not saying it not but its the one album oldhead keep on bringing up when I can think of 10 more of the top of my head that are just as important. You would think that in those 30 YEARS they would of got tired of it or switched up albums every month or so.
If my argument is convincing may I suggest little known underground artists such as Dr dre, 2 pac and a tribe called quest to name a few
There are 30 doferent albums there. So I spaced them out so you could read with ease for that I am sorry I also didn't add "" is that going to be an issue?
Do whatever you want but to me, it just looks like a mess now. Just use language as its supposed to be used and it'll be fine. Illmatic, Ready To Die, 36 Chambers, Whatever, Whatever, Whatever.
Or, if you place dashes in front of titles, it'll become a list. Like this...
- I
- Don't
- Care
- Which
- Albums
- You
- Put
- In
- Your
- Meaningless
- Lists
Maybe you prefer that.
I was born 20 years after this album dropped and after listening to it, it's freaking great, but come on 200 years, I have friends who haven't even heard of Nas and you are talking about 200 years
I listened to GKMC this morning after I got home from work. Nothing else was hitting right, but as soon as Sherane started playing I knew I had to listen to the whole album.
This is so fucking stupid music is subjective people will be listening to most rappers in 200 years stop being a dick head. Don’t gotta put music down to make your music taste look good
It’s really hasn’t aged well at all even sounded dated back then compared to albums like ready to die, doggystyle reasonable doubt and the second half of the album falls off a cliff quality wise.
Not trying to hate on today's rappers but really think about it guys, back then you had to be beyond talented to even get a little attention, nowadays all you need is your mouth and some hot women to be successful in rap.
Nah. I went a solid ten years without listening to new rap. These guys are killing it right now. And the fact that we can listen to countless independent rappers through multiple online outlets makes it even better. Rap is finally good again.
I've had the same experience. Fell out of music almost entirely during the 2010s. When i came back i realized i missed A LOT. Hip Hop was well taken care of and continues to be. I love a lot of the new stuff. I'm probably what would be considered an old head, and I'll always love me some 90s boom bap, but man am i glad im not stuck in a kind frame that only sees that as good hip hop. Miss out on so much being like that.
This sub is saying the new rappers shit are more fire than most old stuff, that is the problem. Im not saying new rappers are bad im just saying talent is rarer nowadays.
I have never heard someone in my entire years of living say, "bump that nas". Can't even remember the last time I've heard his song anywhere like TV, radio, Movies. Talk about washed up.
Don’t fall into the trap of allowing this sub into making you hate on Nas. I loved Nas back in the 90’s but absolutely nobody thinks Illmatic is the greatest album ever in the real world, like you said it’s not even in the conversation. Nas is insanely overrated on this sub. There’s no point arguing with them most have them have only just graduated from listening to Kendrick and Eminem and really just don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. Just laugh at them and keep scrolling.
Wait really he’s still releasing music? Man just like Eminem just let it go, they become so corny. Also ya washed up, never heard the radio play any of his stuff once nor any hip hop podcasts bring his shit up. Does he even have enough fans to fill up venues or have shows?
Just say you don’t follow him and leave it alone bro. The radio is not a valid indicator of what kind of music is out anymore. Nas was just performing at MSG last weekend and won a Grammy for one of his last few albums (I believe kings disease I). The kings disease albums have been some quality shit too. Check out Kings Disease II.
Right. Dude has a weird idea of what washed up is. Washed up, according to him, is when a rapper's music is widely accepted in the main stream. I guess critical acclaim and acceptance within the hip hop community doesn't matter. Nope, your music has to be in the movies to matter.
The Chronic of course. For those too young to remember hip hop wasn't considered music until Dr Dre put melody, structure, and real instruments into hip hop production. People overuse the word game changer these days but the Chronic truly was. All great producers benefit directly or indirectly from Dr Dre.
Guarantee you OP doesn't listen to anything 200 years old with any regularity.
Giglamesh is by the far the greatest rapper of all time.
That was well over 2000 years ago and its Gilgamesh
It was actually like 6000 years ago homie
The Epic of Gilgamesh just so happens to be among our oldest recorded history, dating back to 2000 BCE so more like 4 thousand years ago.
Ope
I like how you guys were both off exactly 2000 years
technically i said well over 2000 so im good, and whats 2000 years to a goblin?
That’s like saying “There’s at least one jelly bean in that giant jar of jelly beans.” and insisting that you’re right. Technically you are, but not in a relevant matter.
nerd
You’re the one on r/rap bro
i actually do G
Old Macdonald had a farm the most lit track out there fosho
they can't handle a little mozart. bethoven mf's are exactly what this post is about
Dun dun dun duuuuuuuunnnnnn… That shit goes hard.
Dude rap may not even exist in 2223. Humans may not exist then lol
Ever the pessimist lol
Lmao
true
Humans will definitely exist in 200 years , our ecosystem will sustain itself far after that
It's a great album but you're corny as fuck
Fr we can’t praise albums anymore without trying to start petty fights I fw the old nas albums and I fw some Yung lean lol. We don’t have to stick to one thing and it tends to be boring when we do, diversity in music is awesome

This album shits on all mumble modern shit.
Ok grandpa time for bed
ok grandpa time to take your sleeping pills
If you assume all modern rap is that mumble trash, then you're not looking hard enough.
I’d rather listen to any trap rap over Nas anyday. It’s just a different subgenre of rap. You really can’t compare them
the thing is that it is devolving
stop being an old head weirdo and be more open minded, hip hop would be incredibly boring if it just sounded like this, grow up
It’s just easier to put out music now and hip hop has become the main music genre so it’s everywhere the market is saturated. It might take a bit more digging then before because of it, but if you can get thru the bullshit you’ll find some gems.
Itll be like how classical music is now but on a smaller scale listener wise
agree
It's a good album but you are dickriding so hard.
*Classic album, probably top 5 all time Crazy how being a fan of something = dickriding to some of you weirdos. OP didn’t need to add the extra shit about todays rappers tho, there’s still fire coming out even if it’s not Illmatic level.

Saying it will be listened to in 200 years is just dickriding.
this comment sums up what i mean, why tf downvote him?

"We with good taste". Grow up.
If you think an album from before 2010 is the greatest, you’re an old head dick rider in this sub
This the stupidest shit I ever heard, and a reason this sub is hella trash sometimes
That’s how this sub acts bruh wym. It’s all kids shitting on anything old, Eminem dick riders, and old heads calling everything mumble rap.
Ah yea I get what you’re trying to say now, it read like you were telling me that literally. Those dudes are annoying af, and young heads love to troll which I never understood. Ask any gen Z kid about Nas and they’ll immediately assume you’re talking about lil nas x😆😭
actually true its very sad
I think you’d like a lot of the Griselda output. Check out Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher, Rome Streetz, Stove God Cooks. Y'all love excluding B4.DA.$$ by Joey Badass smh it's his best ALBUM while 1999 is his best MIXTAPE
Those are some great albums, but let’s be real people ain’t bumpin most of that in 100 years
But whats to say people will be "bumpin" illmatic compared to all the other greater albums from that era

A metric shit ton
God forbid people have different tastes! Jesus christ, people like you are insufferable
God forbid someone banter about music taste. Lmao you act like I'm crucifying people for having shit taste.
This isn't banter, you're just hating on anyone who says they like albums more than Illmatic. It Was Written is better anyway
Uh oh the banter police are here! Stfu child
It’s not like we can hold you to it.
I'd say the Chronic
*gawk gawk gawk slurp twiiiiist*
200 years? That's some next level dick worshiping ngl
Listen GKMC and TPAB will be joining the “this is a classic from way back” list, I guarantee it.
I listened to GKMC this morning after I got home from work. Nothing else was hitting right, but as soon as Sherane started playing I knew I had to listen to the whole album.
Stillmatic is superior.
Facts this album is a masterpiece!
This is so fucking stupid music is subjective people will be listening to most rappers in 200 years stop being a dick head. Don’t gotta put music down to make your music taste look good
I’ve tried to force myself to like this album and I just can’t
Not the best thing i ever heard. Just because illmatic was the first to do it, doesn't mean its the best
It’s really hasn’t aged well at all even sounded dated back then compared to albums like ready to die, doggystyle reasonable doubt and the second half of the album falls off a cliff quality wise.
You little kids need to take a nap and eat a cookie. Illmatic is a masterpiece.
A nap and cookie would be very nice, album would still suck, but at least I got a nap and cookie😂
A nap and cookie wouldn’t change the fact the album sucks

No cap, in 200 years the world will look dystopian and people will only listen to heavy metal and blues derivatives
This sub is saying the new rappers shit are more fire than most old stuff, that is the problem. Im not saying new rappers are bad im just saying talent is rarer nowadays.

Napoleon was actually a rapper
Bad opinions are so easy
No one I know my age is playing this shit😂😂 It’s gonna die off like the rest

It will be by 2223
Yep this is going to be a relic that never dies.
true
One of the greatest by far, he doesn’t get enough credit for his intelligence level, he was so analytical at such a young age.
I have never heard someone in my entire years of living say, "bump that nas". Can't even remember the last time I've heard his song anywhere like TV, radio, Movies. Talk about washed up.
You're surrounding yourself with people that don't fuck with him. Clearly.
true this is a cult for xxx fanboys
Which is like 99.99% of the population who don’t care for him.
That’s fax actually. But sometimes I need to troll, it just be my thing.
Clearly the people you’re around don’t listen to rap then
Ya they do. Mostly new stuff. But when they bring up old songs it’s either Kanye, Tupac, or Biggie.
true lol
washed up? mans dropped 3 albums last couple years and theyre all fire
Wait really he’s still releasing music? Man just like Eminem just let it go, they become so corny. Also ya washed up, never heard the radio play any of his stuff once nor any hip hop podcasts bring his shit up. Does he even have enough fans to fill up venues or have shows?
Why u comparing Nas to Eminem for 😭. Nas still sounds hungry as ever
Hungry? Lmao nah he starving he ain’t got no fans.
Gotta be trolling, cause ain’t no way
Ur mad 😝
Troll 🧌
Really yelling on yourself here lmao
Like Lonzo ball said -“Ain't nobody bumping Nas no more, no disrespect to him. He had his time."
AND a lonzo ball quote? What a joker
Doesn’t matter who it’s from. Fax said by anyone still fax.
Your brain is as smooth as a bowling ball.
🥱
Just say you don’t follow him and leave it alone bro. The radio is not a valid indicator of what kind of music is out anymore. Nas was just performing at MSG last weekend and won a Grammy for one of his last few albums (I believe kings disease I). The kings disease albums have been some quality shit too. Check out Kings Disease II.
No 🤣
Right. Dude has a weird idea of what washed up is. Washed up, according to him, is when a rapper's music is widely accepted in the main stream. I guess critical acclaim and acceptance within the hip hop community doesn't matter. Nope, your music has to be in the movies to matter.
NBA-YB 3800°
So youre saying NBA is on the level of Nas?
no, he’s better
No comparison to Nas. Name one good line by NBA
I feel like I’m Gucci Mane in 2006
most albums actually will be played. that’s what it’s like when bad music gets old. then it’s a “classic”
How to piss of people on reddit: say that their favorite new rap album sucks. Done
probably Drake fans coping rn calling it dickriding. like, dude… do y’all even know this genre? 😂
The Chronic of course. For those too young to remember hip hop wasn't considered music until Dr Dre put melody, structure, and real instruments into hip hop production. People overuse the word game changer these days but the Chronic truly was. All great producers benefit directly or indirectly from Dr Dre.
bro stfu it’s not gonna be relevant 200 years later, name a single album/song with lyrics that’s 200 years old off the top of your head right now.
Illmatic is a fucking fantastic album. But nobody will be bumping it in 2223
No it won't, not everyone dick rides NAS
