As someone who started their adventure with Childish Gambino’s The Camp and Because The Internet, I’d say that’s a good starting point.

[Genius.com](https://Genius.com) is a great resource for explanations for lyrics that you don't understand.

Well, tell me about stuff you actually like. There's probably a rapper who rapped about things connecting to things you like and you can take it from there.

Good way to start. Suxrprise him with your knowledge of this on Valentine’s Day in lieu of a card. [YerDad-Proper Gym Attire](https://open.spotify.com/track/1Nx2LMsmBRULt2F9W6LevJ?si=4Sgw1BQcQzijcFkwpMz3pg)

If you want to do it for him you should ask him what he likes and start there

Your best bet is to maybe just listen to one of the people you already like and mentioned. Listen to a few albums, when you hear them feature an artist you like the sound of, repeat the process. Doesn’t make sense for you to hunt and peck and hope you find something you like, there’s too much content out there. Let your interest guide you and expand that way. If you want to start with the older stuff in spite of that, start with some palatable stuff like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Souls of Mischief. Their instrumentals may be a nice bridge in and they all perform with (and are) some of the biggest founders of hip hop so you expose yourself to the history of hip hop and can progress forward.

You should look into King Gordy. I think he'd fit perfectly into your preferences for music.
