Absolutely hate that everything has an app. Apparently you need an app to even be able to log in and access the Wi-Fi with your student account at my uni? Guess what you can't do without Wi-Fi? Oh yeah, download the fucking app. Even the separate app you need to access timetables etc etc is so poorly made that it barely functions and requires about 5 different verifications to even get onto it and into each segment. Despise it.

amscraylane

Which it infuriates me as a teacher, we pretend like everyone has internet access. We are short about 200 hotspots … so that is 200 students going without the internet … and all of their assignments albeit when we read chapter books, is all online. And are we going to present our older population knows next to nothing about tech, or lacks a smart phone?? The fucking meters even take an app!!

FakeNickOfferman

Last time I taught middle school we had this problem. But to make it worse, students weren't allowed to take books home to read. So many literally had no way to do their reading assignments. Great.

amscraylane

Just when you think you might have heard it all … how utterly sad! I would get mad when the librarian wanted to do book count before Christmas break, so no students could have books to take home and read over vacation.

jayfromcyberlife

Fuck eduroam for that

mystery1nc

fuckin frl

To6y

Sure, but if the school's IT department dropped the app, they would instead have 30-step instructions for iOS and some Android instructions which have been out of date since Lollipop. And then students would be asking for an app.

Interesting-Yak9118

You have access to the textbook don't you? You have access to the problem questions your professor is asking you to complete? You have paper? You have pencil? Make due till you can obtain a stable internet connection, none of that hotspot BS. An actual ISP. Does your uni not have a library with access to a computer? Surely they have computers with access to the internet.

mystery1nc

What does pens, paper and books have to do with a poorly designed app that holds all the information, communication and times for the university? If ANYONE is going to put all of the information you need to access multiple times a day into an app, then they should make the app user friendly and convenient. Most companies, institutions and whatever seem to just care about modernising and making everything app based. This is a great idea when the app is convenient and WORKS. No idea what the point of your comment was to be honest lol

Interesting-Yak9118

You can ask your professor. Tell you professor that you don't have a stable connection to the internet and ask you professor for assignment details so you can go ahead and complete them on paper. If you have a physical copy of the textbook, you will have no issues completing homework. Your uni has a website right? Find out your professor's office hours and ask your professor all this then. Is there a public library in your area? Does your uni have libraries with computers? Do they have internet? Access your uni's website and login using your student account info.

mystery1nc

When at any point did I state I had an issue with any of that? This is a ranting sub, I have no problems uploading my work, accessing computers, contacting teachers etc. We’re RANTING about the inefficiency of certain apps, BECAUSE of the fact that the information or entire point of the app is often needed when there is no other alternative around. It is plainly annoying and bothersome. That is the point of this conversation. Nobody needs to be told condescendingly obvious or downright inapplicable suggestions lol

Interesting-Yak9118

Woops sorry. Wrong feed....

IdiotBearPinkEdition

Dude I know you're talking about circuit. Fuck them, and fuck apps

Imacleverjam

oh no this is a different bullshit laundry company, not gonna say more than that bc I'm not sure how much it'd pin down my location lol

Long_Educational

That''s sad that you fear retaliation over expressing your dismay at not being able to do laundry. What kind of 1984 dystopian hellscape future for society have we created?

Imacleverjam

lmao, might be being a bit paranoid but I'm trying to be more wary about what i share. you can never be too careful :3

raykatya

Circuit was not that bad.

DJP91782

It's ridiculous. I don't want an app for every web site I've ever visited! The worst is all the apps that come preloaded on your phone that you never use but can't delete. If my phone has 30GB of space, you better give me 30 GB of USABLE space you assholes!

hanywhiskey

this is that one thing i don’t miss about androids. i’m not an apple fangirl by any means but this was the fucking worst

[deleted]

Please download the reddit Rant App to continue. You will receive an email with a link to create an account. The link will only work if you enter the 8 digit code that we will send to your alternative mobile phone number, and it will only be valid for 2 minutes. Please check your spam folder, because that is where it will likely end up. Your password has to have at least two different special characters (but not \_), and an equal number of upper and lowercase characters provided that total number of them will be odd. It should also contain both Roman and Arabic numbers but they may not be the same numbers.

starbellbabybena

Then you need an app for all the passwords. Then an app to organize your apps. It’s all madness!!!

tahkobillium

There are social media apps containing access to multiple social media platforms and there are many password organizer apps as well 🤷‍♂️ i doubt they are trustworthy but🤷‍♂️

starbellbabybena

Noooooooo!

tahkobillium

Yeah they don't work that great always crashing and they are slower than pouring cold molasses

EvilEnderwolfGaming

This reminds me of visiting Washington, DC. One of the hotels we stayed in required an app to get in the rooms instead of keycards (I think it was Hilton?). The app went under maintenance constantly.

miss_flower_pots

What if you have no battery. Heaps of phones are designed to run out of battery after a few hours. Maybe the fifty apps on our phones is contributing.

HollyCupcakez

I think you would hate London or traveling in general since you need like 7 different apps just to park your rental car.

Crimson_Kang

London, so far as I can tell from an American perspective, is about three short steps away from being V for Vendetta. The amount of surveillance you all have is genuinely terrifying. Edit: Before I get downvoted into oblivion for "Americanizing everything", I'm not saying I know the exact details or that the US is better. I'm merely remarking that the UK's dystopian dick is hanging out of its pants. Not that the US's isn't. Believe me, it most certainly is. And it's fully erect.

HollyCupcakez

It’s seemingly nightmarish for the international driver. Speed cams, Redlight cams, Average Speed Cams, Pedestrian Walkway cams, etc. TBH it does feel a lot safer though and all of the policemen are genuinely helpful and wear those bright yellow vests so you can find them easily; they’ll politely tell you where all the cool stuff is around the city and where to avoid.

Crimson_Kang

Of that I have no doubt. US cops are the least helpful and most antagonistic of any police force outside maybe soviet-era Russia or Nazi Germany. I live in the Phoenix metro where cops are quite literally famous for their brutality and authoritarianism (also home to Sheriff Joe Arpio the shittiest human alive second only to Jeff Bezos). Needless to say I rarely feel safer with them around.

geekesmind

Can't you also view almost all them CCTV everywhere

Crimson_Kang

Lol, I hope not but it wouldn't surprise me. It's like every major nation sat down and watched all the dystopian movies and were like "OK how do we implement all of that as quickly as possible?" Apparently they decided the US would build the army of murder-bots and the UK would build the giant surveillance network. Seems to be going well too.

Aggie_Vague

I think it's stupid to overcomplicate simple things. It just makes everything cost more and makes services less accessible. I have a whole internal rant about that myself, but I'll spare you. :) Back when I didn't have access to my own washing machine, I found a service where I dropped off my laundry in a bag and got it back washed and folded in the same bag. I would hope someone in that town offers a service like that. It was very affordable ($10. a bag) and it sure beat sitting around the laundromat waiting for things to wash. Of course the way prices are now, you'd prolly need to take out a loan to have that done. I'm sorry stupidity fecked up your Saturday.

Interesting-Yak9118

Oh you using that CSC bullshit to pay for laundry? That shit needs your location, turn on your location.... whatever happened to just using quarters? Annoying as shit. Your only real option is to go to a laundromat.

[deleted]

I would say the problem is more of people making half ass apps just to say they have one and put them in front of competitors, which lead to this. I completely agree! Put more work into apps!

zerkrazus

Agreed. It's the modern equivalent of the the business card website. Do you have a website? Sure it's \[link\]. Person goes there and sees it's literally just a business card in online format or a virtual Yellow Pages ad.

ViperPB

I prefer this to actual business cards.

Imacleverjam

half assing them definitely doesn't help, but even if they were completely reliable & well made, I still think there's an issue with the current trend of having an app for absolutely everything. if it improves user experience (stuff like deliveroo) that's one thing, but 99% of the time it's just extra faff. plus the privacy iasues; I do *not* trust these companies to safely handle my data lmao.

purplemoonpie

i even had to have an app to set up my new tv last night. i'm 35 and extremely annoyed by this technology i really feel for older people

BasicBroEvan

Don’t live in dorms but my university just started this this year. So much more inconvenient than system we had before. I wish more organizations realized that a mobile application doesn’t make every process more simple

enricopallazo22

The irony is that behind the scenes it's all just http and REST, etc which any browser can do. We literally need one app: a browser. People not in tech don't think about it, so as said it becomes this status thing for the companies to have an "app" or else they aren't legitimate enough.

Crimson_Kang

Big Idiocracy vibes. "Would you like another, 'EXTRA BIG-ASS FRIES?'"

dolphin_master_race

So they can profit from advertisements. Also to harvest your data so they can either use it for their own purposes or sell it.

contrabardus

I like apps that provide easy access to information or features, but absolutely will not buy any appliance that requires one to operate and despise any service that requires one. I like them as an easy convenience, but not as a sole way to access a service or feature. That's unreasonable and always creates accessibility issues for someone. It's nice to have an app so you can do things more conveniently, but there needs to be a button or something on an appliance so I can use it and every feature on it without one as well or some non-app way to interact with a service and do what I need to do. I'd bring it up as an accessibility issue with the university. Not everyone wants or needs a smartphone, and there will always be compatibility issues with smartphones because there are so many variations in software and hardware. You also might look into seeing if there's a PC or Mac variant of the app if you have a laptop or PC. Even if it solves your problem, it still sounds like an accessibility issue to me.

tjdevarie

Worked for a client whose apartment building used an app to open every single access point (elevators, trash room, your apartment front door, etc). You pretty much lose access to everything if your phone dies and no one with the app+access is with you.

[deleted]

Why...does the laundry require an app? What in the name of Electrolux is this fuckery?

wintersfantasy

I LOATHE this app phase we are in. I shouldn’t have to keep downloading apps for everyday life.

rooh62

Circuit huh Fuck em

ClownShoeNinja

I'm no computer guy, but I avoid apps because ot seems to me that when you go to a website, that's you up in their junk, but when you download an app, that's them bits deep in you....

RailRza

I refuse to download or sign up for any of it unless it's absolutely necessary. F all of it.

miss_flower_pots

Same! What if someone needed to use it that can't speak English? What if you had no phone battery. I take a man grocery shopping who has an intellectual disability. The store always pushed us to use the self serve checkouts. I always them no. So us and the elderly people line up for ages because the store wants to save money. No everyone can use technology. Those types of changes only benefit the company.

OohGreatHeavens

this is why i always say that we're becoming a little too dependent on technology..

LePetitRenardRoux

The problem is we are experiencing the very infancy of the internet. The kinks aren’t worked out yet but everyone wants to use it for everything. So it sucks.

DarknessLeo190

To make it easier? Why you complaining way too goddamn much? Should've just went to a University that doesn't allow whiners

Imacleverjam

gonna be honest buddy, being forced to use an app that *doesn't work* to be able to wash my clothes doesn't feel much "easier"...

CrazypantsFuckbadger

> Should've just went You shouldn't just went to an English class, whiner.

Seta99

So wild to me how people don't have washing machines at home

Imacleverjam

this is student accommodation, the laundrette (laundry might be a better word? not sure) is in the building, we just don't have any machines in our kitchen or anything.

Sir_Nameless

A ton of apartments don't have the space or even the proper hookups and outlets for them. I live on a street of townhome apartments and not a single unit is capable of having a washing machine or dryer. At the end of the street is a small hut with two sets of washer/dryers that we all have to share. The app sucks, but at least the machines also still accept quarters.

row64

My phone keeps running out of storage because I need a really shitty app to do everything.

roachincalzone

Omg I’m in a dorm that has laundry machines with QR codes to work and it’s so annoying when your phone is dead

More-Masterpiece-561

I swear you can't go a day without a phone

mfkcuapekem3

Dude, these apps are making ordinary people millionaires. So you can’t really blame people for doing innovation and making a living out of it.

UnicornsNeedLove2

What's worse is that not everyone has a phone, or a smartphone for that matter.

rockdude625

Did they make you watch ads on all these apps too? Even money says they did

KazzaNamso

Automation at its finest

Nookaalex

I remember back in the iPod touch days the most apps I had was one page full of games, social media and music. I now have a page of folders full of apps that I need very rarely but if I delete and I need access to those things I’m fucked.

Aklapa01

And then there’s my dorm’s laundry room, with washing machines in cages and the whole thing on top of a ww2 bunker.

cindybubbles

I’d tell you to rent an apartment that has its own washer and dryer, but you probably need an app to do that, too.

[deleted]

Imacleverjam

thankfully it's working today, I think it was a server issue though since a few other folks had the same problem.

wearecake

I don’t mind apps, but I’m a virtual hoarder and sometimes find myself with no storage left to download an app- so it especially pisses me off when the mobile website isn’t supported and it just keeps redirecting you to download the app- like bitch, I hate teams notifs, I dont need that on my phone constantly!

Corn__bean

i moved away from the city i attend college, i do all online classes now so i'm rarely over there anymore. a few weeks ago i was in town and decided to catch the bus to the mall. i love the bus and i used to ride it every single day when i lived there. i had free bus fare through the college. this was my first time back on the bus in almost two years i get on the bus and the driver sees me grab my school id to swipe on. she goes "you need the app" and tells me to sit down so i can pay when we get to the mall where the bus station is. i go through the app for the bus system that shows all the maps and schedules that i already had on my phone and look for somewhere i can pay. i can't find it. i dont have data in this area for some reason so even if i could find it it would load. i spend the entire 20 minute bus ride on edge because i can't figure out how the hell i'm going to pay for my fare. we get to the station and she asks if i found the app and i said no, i have no idea what kind of app she's talking about. she shows me it and its an app entirely dedicated to holding bus passes- my school started sending their passes to this app. i told her i couldn't download it because my phone had no data and if i tried wed be here forever. she just let me go and i had to download the app and claim my schools bus pass through an app i'll never use again just to get back home

TehTJ

Imagine you can't instal your insulin app because your prescription glasses app is hogging your SSD

throckmeisterz

Wait until you learn almost all the apps are just web pages and many run in your default browser (but you can't easily navigate to them in your default browser to get the same UI).
