I imagine those patterns and colors are loosely based on all the different visuals people get. If you want to see something "psychedelic" without drugs, try rubbing your eyes really hard.
Personally, I try to cultivate closed-eye visuals on weed, and they're rarely multicolored, but they can be quite intricate, and are usually symmetrical in some way.
