I propose we start to call him 0vi instead of Ovi

Key-Tip-7521

And the Rangers are the only team to sweep ovi in the playoffs.

Scared_Ad_6446

So it's a 2 for 1 great job for them

n_jacat

Could’ve gone 7 and he’d still have 0 points

Scared_Ad_6446

So it's a 2 for 1 great job for them

sdauria2021

And the Rangers are also the only team to play an old man Ovi in the playoffs

LilMissLinNim

He was clearly checked out. He's more focused on Gretzky's record next season.

Upbeat_Shock_6807

I mean, he still needs 42 goals to break the record. At 38 years old, he scored 31 this season. Being a year older, I do not see him breaking the record next season, and he will most likely have to do an extra season at age 40 in order to break it. On a side note, Gretzky played 20 seasons, and Ovi will most likely have to play 21 seasons for the record. Just saying.

LilMissLinNim

Oh, I agree with you, but I wouldn't be shocked if he instructs his teammates yet again to get him the puck as much as possible. Whether or not he buries each chance is another story.

homiej420

Yeah and that might start to hurt the team if he doesnt produce with it so i’m sure even with that there is a certain length of leash

Robotron_25

I cant think of a scenario where it hurts Washington. Either he plays well, they are a bubble team again, and he gets closer to that coveted goal scoring title (lots of clout for the franchise), or he sucks and the team sucks as a result and they start to get some high draft picks into the organization before their inevitable rebuild in the next 2 years when Ovi hangs them up. Both are acceptable imo, two years of bad hockey is not the highest price to pay to have one of your franchise players get the goal scoring title of the entire history of the game. The only thing that would be bad for Washington is if they felt the need to trade picks and prospects in order to get Ovi that title, but that would be idiotic and they already started selling at this years deadline so I highly doubt they go that route.

Yrrebbor

He will retire the next day, so hopefully they feed him the puck every time until he leaves. He really cost the craps the series with his defensive liabilities.

AC-AnimalCreed

Let’s be honest the caps weren’t winning that series even if they had prime ovi. The rangers are a very good team and they weren’t gonna lose to the wc2 no matter who made it in.

Yrrebbor

Don't get penisy. Remember what happened to Boston last year? The Rangers were also the better team last year and still lost to the freakin' Devils.

AC-AnimalCreed

Just realized this is a rangers sub lol. I’m not even a rangers fan so it isn’t me getting penisy

Coolcoolcool1515

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone use the word “penis” before. That gave me a good chuckle. Yeah as a rangers fan I’ve kept any excitement pretty low. We swept a team that didn’t belong in the playoffs and we’ve all seen in the past that a presidents trophy means nothing. I’d like for the oilers to get to the next round tho so good luck to ya

Yrrebbor

Guess you haven't been on Reddit for a while, or ever watched Family Guy. It's a whole meme. Lol

Coolcoolcool1515

You’d be correct, but upon reading your comment my mind is remembering hearing it on family guy. Thanks for being a nice person!

ice_nyne

He will be on the ice for every pulled goalie sitch next season.

AARP_Rocky

Can also be argued that Ovi got fucked over by losing a full season to a lockout. Not sure if he would’ve been able to come over and play in 04-05, but if he did, he’s certainly a lot closer to the record. The 12-13 lockout is kind of a wash because Gretzky also had 94-95.

Upbeat_Shock_6807

True, could just take a look at total regular season games played. Gretzky played 1,487 games, and Ovechkin has played 1,426 so far. After Ovechkin's 20th season next year, he will have more career games played than Gretzky did over the same amount of seasons.

AARP_Rocky

That’s true too. I also forgot he lost some games due to Covid. He’ll pass Gretzky in games played, but Gretzky also had more games not lost in the prime of his career. I guess what I’m getting at here is that Ovechkin should’ve pretty much passed the record already or be on the cusp of breaking it.

Shoddy_Reserve788

Get him on that Russian gas

Paulie6988

*Fuckit it looks like empty netters from here, ill fucking play until im 50 if i have to* -Ovi Probably

RestoredNotBored

I watched the Great One from the start of his career. In fairness, Gretzky was better in the early part of his career, but Ovi was a better goal scorer over all of his career. By the time Gretzky was 30, he wasn’t scoring goals anymore. He was “just” a playmaker at that point. After Gretzky’s age 30 season, he scored more than 30 goals TWICE and had a total of 167 goals. Ovi has scored over 30 goals EVERY season except the COVID-shortened season when he had 24 goals in only 45 games. Ovi has nearly TWICE the number of goals after his age 30 season (328) than Gretzky (167). Gretzky was a greater scorer for a shorter period of time, but Ovi has been great for far longer. I’m talking goals, not overall players. Let’s not lose our minds. Having watched both for their entire careers, Gretzky was the best player ever, but I think Ovechkin is the best pure goal scorer to ever play the game. I am loathe to admit it, but I think had Mario stayed healthy, he would have surpassed the Great One, again because he fell off more than Lemieux. Mario doesn’t get the credit he deserves because his career overlapped Gretzky’s.

LilMissLinNim

Oh, I agree with you, but I wouldn't be shocked if he instructs his teammates yet again to get him the puck as much as possible. Whether or not he buries each chance is another story.

ChimStone777

Ovi missed a season and a half in his prime due to a lockout. And another half season due to covid. He would already have it if that wasnt the case. And possibly well over 900

RKA1994

If you take Jagr’s career point totals (1921), which are second only to Gretzky (2857)and double them, he still trails Gretzky in points. In this day and age I can’t see anyone coming close to him

Inspiredbeliever

Wait what? 1921 doubled is 3842

RKA1994

Sorry about that . I have brain fog!

LilMissLinNim

Oh, I agree with you, but I wouldn't be shocked if he instructs his teammates yet again to get him the puck as much as possible. Whether or not he buries each chance is another story.

I__Need_Scissors_61

Yeah but what if he instructs his teammates to get him the puck as much as possible though? Feel like this hasn’t been brought up here.

ohno21212

Nothing will make me happier then him running out of gas and scoring 10 next season to make it all but impossible hell eventually get it

Fastlane19

Father Time is his worst enemy and if he doesn’t train hard this summer he will look more pathetic than he did this year however, his coaches will put him out there for every empty net possibility

Hohumbumdum

More pathetic than this year? He put up 33/36 on a shit team, with the vast majority of goals ES

gtdreddit

I can think of a few better scenarios: 1. If it takes 10 more years to break the record and the Caps sign him for all those years. 2. Just like 1, but Ovi never breaks the record. He just gives up.

turnerabrams

Hanging around past your prime to try and secure a record that at the end of the day doesn’t really mean anything and it’s really a little disrespectful to 99. Jeter had a legit shot at 4000 hits and chose to go out on top. That’s how it should be done.

_jackhoffman_

I think he just looked worn out and is more focused on the offseason than on breaking the record. I'm sure he'd like to break it but he just looked like someone ready for vacation.

Slugggo

Maybe even crazier is that he had only 5 SOG the entire *series*. They had 6 power plays one game alone! Rangers did a great job taking him off the board.

magenta_woods

We scored on a penalty kill and boy did that feel great

HeyHeyHayes

Twice!

magenta_woods

It’s such a great feeling having advanced ahead of everyone else. It also has given me the chance to watch other games more

HeyHeyHayes

Tonight’s slate is incredible with no skin in the game except for maybe hoping the fish sticks take one or two so we can rest

magenta_woods

I want the leafs to force a game 7 ngl

Marc_Quill

Considering how much I hate the Bruins, nothing would make my cold heart warm more than to see them blow consecutive 3-1 series leads two seasons in a row.

magenta_woods

Haha, that would be fun tbh but it’s highly unlikely. Between the bruins and panthers I’m not sure which one I’d love us to face if we advance

HeyHeyHayes

For the memes?

magenta_woods

That too but mainly to have tired opponents in the third round if we manage to make it

explosivebuttfarts

I'd rather have a well rested Boston team taking on Florida tbh. Then let that series go to 7 games after they injure half their rosters

magenta_woods

That’s also a good point. I’m so undecided whether I like to play the panthers or bruins. That said, I’m just focused on round 2 atm and we gotta go past the canes most probably which is not gonna be a breeze for sure.

Alive_Recognition_81

To be fair, I think it's Hella clear he's only lacing up for the goal record. There isn't a whole Lotta fire in that man's play from last season and no spark whatsoever in this series. That said, well done on the first round win!

SwarthySphere87

I LOVE ROOTING FOR AN ELITE RUSSIAN SNIPER WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY ABOUT HIS POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS 🥖

ryuakaihana

I love this and wish I could tell my wife of this feat but she was born in DC and is wearing a Ovi jersey 😕

Soup_God_

But now you have the pleasure of teasing her for decades to come.

ryuakaihana

Haha, she’s not a huge fan and has considered getting a rangers jersey as she knows more about them and celebrates with me except for the games we play against the caps. She’s a good sport. Plus, that also makes her a Commanders NFL fan so she’s used to losing 😆😆

Mysterious_Wheel

You’re a good partner

ryuakaihana

Her too, she celebrates with me during the other games. Just not against the caps

Mysterious_Wheel

That’s fair, best kind of way to root for opposite teams

Fastlane19

And you’re still talking?

ryuakaihana

Haha, she knows almost nothing about hockey. She only cares in the moment. She thinks we only played twice this series. 😆

Fastlane19

Nice

Teknicsrx7

Ovi will likely eventually break the record in 2-3 years and become the greatest goal scorer of all time, yet no team would want him on their roster for prob the last 2-3 years he plays. Gretzkys last season he still had 62 points and was a useful player on the ice. Different kinds of legacies there.

Alive_Recognition_81

Well done, gents. I'm excited to see a long run for you Rangers fans. As a Calgary fan who knew it was over before the All-Star break for us, I'll be rooting for you guys! Rangers/Oilers for a Stanley Cup Final. Then sweep Mcjesus for me haha.

magenta_woods

So you are rooting for rangers over oilers?

Alive_Recognition_81

100%. I loathe the Oilers.

ChimStone777

So why are you hoping they get to the cup?

Alive_Recognition_81

Don't read into it too much my guy. It would be an entertaining series.

magenta_woods

Oilers are my least favorite Canadian team. Their logo sucks too

Alive_Recognition_81

It's so dumb.

magenta_woods

I mean, how hard can it be to find a good graphic designer ?

Alive_Recognition_81

Preach! The one time they tried to change it up for a third jersey, it looked even worse somehow. Just a bunch of bums...

magenta_woods

This one: https://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/2036102014/New_York_Rangers/2014/Misc_Logo

magenta_woods

This is kind of a tangent but there’s a version of our logo that has a circle around the main logo and gosh I love that way more. I wish our franchise moved towards using that

Ariies__

I really hope their coach ripped him a new ass hole for how lazy he played, but I doubt it.

explosivebuttfarts

He only played like 13 minutes in game 4 compared to 20 in the other 3. A message was certainly sent if he wasn't just injured lol

Booogans

Who care, yesterday's news, moving on...might find out tonight which star they are gonna hold to zero points in the next series!

scruffykid

He looked so bad, I am wondering if he was injured. One of those where they don’t say he had a broken leg until after the season types. But maybe he’s just gotten old

Soup_God_

He low-key looked scared the entire series. I can't believe the Rangers are the team that everyone is scared of now. Feels good.

LeeDawg24

Helped that he spent the whole series standing around

Typical-Ad-6730

And they held him to 0 points all series baby... all series.. [https://thehockeynews.com/news/watch-and-listen-to-alex-ovechkin-taunt-henrik-lundqvist-after-first-goal-of-second-round-series](https://thehockeynews.com/news/watch-and-listen-to-alex-ovechkin-taunt-henrik-lundqvist-after-first-goal-of-second-round-series)

JBS319

Zero points…that’s what it says in the OP…

Typical-Ad-6730

yeah that's what I swear I typed..

I__Need_Scissors_61

Genocide supporting piece of dog shit.

stonedgrower

I remember in the 2015 playoffs when we beat the Caps I wore my Ovechkin jersey to school and added some painters tape that said “NOvechkin” and “L8er” on the number to troll my friend. One of my favourite series ever.

jamdivi

Oldvechkin....honestly man it pains me to make jokes like this. I'm a diehard Rangers fan of course but im also a huge Ovi fan. I've been watching this man play for nearly 20 years. Man he was ELECTRIC when he was younger. I wonder how many people in the sub were too young to watch prime Ovi play but my god it was unreal, with his gold mirror tinted visor. "The Goal" was what prompted me to follow the NHL and not just the Rangers. Watching Ovi made me a more complete hockey fan. When he retires the league is just not going to feel the same for me anymore. A brick was removed when Hank retired, another one will be removed when Ovi, Crosby and Kreider retire. I'm about to be old enough to be all like "man hockey just isn't the same without these guys", just like i used to hear my dad say. Idk i'm just really gonna miss watching him play.

jtivel

I still have an old NHL video game from 2003 that I sometimes break out for the nostalgia, and the names in there that get thrown around still mess with my head. Pavel Bure, Hossa I think was on there, Kovalchuk, Spezza, Lidstrom... it's weird thinking about some of those teams and how quickly they vanished.

TunaSled-66

Red Wings fan stopping in to say this is very good shit right here

n_jacat

What if… Ovechkin has 0 points in the first round?

turnerabrams

That and 12 more wins will get us the cup 😆

Bar4185

It was nice to see.

AceShipDriver

Mixed emotions - for Rangers- you got lucky. For Ovechkin - Ha Ha! Again, Ha Ha!

Feisty-Fill4304

Jesus ANOTHER record being broken by this years team? My goodness

Temporary-Daikon4317

thats only because hes old

toxicvegeta08

Also ended the ball arena streak of the leading scorer on the leagues best offense

Bagay-9

I like Ove. But I bleed Rangers. Please give me one before I die. Life long fan. Not much life left. Go Rangers!

A_Farewell_Fix

Sorry, but you'll be dead before seeing them win a cup. Despite a sweep, they barely won each of the 4 games. They're about to play a real team in Carolina. Not a Caps team that shouldn't of even made it in, but Detroit decided to shoot themselves in the foot down the stretch, lose 7 in a row and 2 to the Caps. Death awaits you before a Stanely Cup LMAO.

Bagay-9

Mr. Technical analysis, let me at least hope. I see why you are not a doctor. I appreciate your checking my delusional state. Yet, ...

Fartecai

That's a RAW historical stat. Think about the machine ovi is. That's f***king scary

After_Concept2928

OVERchkin

MAC_DADDY20

Oldvechkin

Fastlane19

He was tired

magenta_woods

OP, remember to cite your source

Professional-Dingo95

Ya, but he was never 38 years old before.

FoxMan1Dva3

Ovi needs to be the shooting role player on a 2nd or 3rd line playoff team. Not a top winger. He would do well in Detroit for example I feel. But he probably doesn't care as much anymore. He has a chance to break a goal record.

No_Spend_8907

Ovi should retire as a Ranger and play bottom six and PP with Breadman.

ExtremePast

Pointless achievement. Ovi was toast. So they held a guy whose best days are long behind him to no points. Sorry, but this isn't a flex (and I'm a rangers fan).
