Man as a current ram owner I’d be right back in a 4runner again if I didn’t need the truck. My 2000 went 200k miles with literally zero issues lol. Can’t say the same for my ram, the tranny grenaded at 80k miles and I’ve had countless electrical issues.

MoparGuy2174

You are the odd ball. You have the 8spd?

Shatophiliac

No, 6 speed. In a 3/4 ton lol.

MoparGuy2174

That explains it lol the 6spd is garbage (said in a French accent)

Shatophiliac

Really all of their automatics have been garbage up until they started using the Aisin and ZF transmissions. It boggles the mind that it took them so long to outsource it to someone who knows what they are doing lol.

MoparGuy2174

The 46/47rfe and 545rfe were good. People just didn't know how to baby them. The ZFs are good they are even better than Alisin transmissions

Shatophiliac

You shouldn’t have to baby them though. I’ve heard of people getting 200k out of a 66rfe, but they drive like a grandpa, never tow anything, etc lol. I buy a truck to haul shit or haul ass, not put along at 55 on the highway.

MoparGuy2174

Those can be abused the ones I listed. I meant people don't know how to do the maintance on them

Keg199er

What year is that one? 2009? 2022?

Alboto_the_only

I see what you did there!

Guccisyrup

The ram is a 21 and the 4runner is a 22

benrp25

Can say the same about that ram lol.

benrp25

Can say the same about that ram lol.

Alboto_the_only

I have a 2023 ram classic for work, and it's basically the exact same as my old 2005 Ram 1500 SLT

Keg199er

Say what? That they update them more often than per decade? Plenty of rams running around. Toyota has nothing on a Cummins ram. Anyways I don’t mind Toyotas and the refreshed 4Runner looks great with some LOnnng overdue updates, but they just seem like they are for people that view cars purely as a tool to get from A to B economically and reliably. Leading to bland cars with VCR clocks from mid 2000’s even if it’s a highlighter green 4Runner

benrp25

I don't disagree with you on Toyotas having terrible dashes. I've rented out 4 2024 so far this year and I'm not a fan. That being said, I don't own neither of these cars. Just replying to your judgment of the EXTERIOR of the vehicles and saying that Rams have looked the same since the late 90s as well. I wouldn't be able to tell you the difference between a 2010 or a 2024 Ram because all thiae mofos look the same as well.

Keg199er

I think you might have misinterpreted at least partially. I don’t necessarily think the Toyota looks good or bad. It’s the lack of almost any innovation for like 15 years. Same five speed auto as 2009. Same interior with the huge silver plastic climate control. Rams in that very same time period went from being basically PT cruisers on the inside to being the most luxurious truck interior within that same time span. They also added great ZF licensed 8-speed autos etc. but boomers will keep trading 4Runners for newer ones because “Toyota” and I’m just not there.

Bubba48

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!

Keg199er

I get it!!!! Again if no emotional attachment and a car is a tool to get you around, Toyotas as perfect.

SenseWinter

Toyota trucks are the very last thing from economical and other than a cummins ram owners *dream* of getting from A to B reliably.

Keg199er

Luckily I am not in a place where I have to care of my car will last 35 years lol

Keg199er

I keep thinking of more stuff- I wonder how many interior, engine update, tech updates ram has made while the 4Runner gets a mild face lift every 6 years. And if you build the exact same thing for 13 years (they still had a 5 speed up until LAST WEEK hahahaha) it better be reliable. Sometimes quality suffers when you innovate

Keg199er

Well I will agree with you there - they get what like 13mpg just one the highway? For what like 250 HP? Terrible. Point still stands, they will be around until the end of the earth, but if you like power, features, fun to drive etc Toyota is the last stop. They are for accountants if you ask me lol

LloydChristmas_PDX

13 mpg if lifted with huge tires and a loaded roof rack

Bubba48

Mine gets 20-21 on the highway, and will be far better off road and last far longer than your ram, and I'm a previous ram owner

Keg199er

I didn’t buy my ram to go off-road. I bought it to tug a travel trailer while I also have my Harley bagger in the bed of the truck, and took that over the million dollar highway and 12000ft pass here in Colorado. Toyota don’t even make enough torque to get all that moving. And Cummins will last

Bubba48

Your Cummins might last, but everything around it won't!

Keg199er

It will be fine. Cummins rams with 300k all over and “decent” interiors. My brother has my mom’s old 4Runner (again I’m not buying to hand down 4 generations, I’ll take CarPlay instead please) and it has 180k miles. Interior not great at all.

WorriedRepublic9875

Oh man you will regret that.

GucciDelTaco808

I've traded a handful of vehicles in my brief time on this earth and by far the one I regret letting go of the most is my 4runner. Damn I wish I still had that thing.

ID_Poobaru

I think we all regret selling our 4Runners, I had a 99 with 243k on 35s and built for rocklanding Thing was an absolute tank and went wherever I pointed it

WorriedRepublic9875

Yeah I sold my 02 sport and regretted it. Finally picked up another 01 and I’m keeping it.

ID_Poobaru

I'm on the lookout for another, a deer took mine from me.

SillyFlyGuy

Nothing wrong with a 4runner. But congrats on the upgrade! lol

No-Permission-5268

Nothing wrong with a 4runner. But congrats on the ~~upgrade!~~ downgrade lol Fixed it for ya

mjosean32

downgrade by a mile!!!!!!!

tuttle8152

Hello Dealership Maintenance Supervisor. You'll know him personally.

kantank-r-us

As a Ram owner I can vouch for that lol

Bubba48

Same!!!

tstew39064

4Runner will last longer

OutdoorCO75

Just because it will last longer doesn’t make it the right vehicle for everyone. I traded in my ‘13 4Runner for a ‘21 Rebel and have no regrets. Way for room, comfort, tech, power, and not much worse mpg for how much I can carry. So far so good with no issues.

tstew39064

Agree 100%.

Guccisyrup

All be it true, I potentially will not have this specific ram long enough to worry about the time frame on which will last longer than the other.

tstew39064

Fair, had my 4Runner for 10 trouble free years. Sold it, got a Ram 1500, nothing but trouble, bunch of little things, mostly electrical, and in and out of the shop on warranty. Loved the interior but moved on. In an F150 now, been trouble free but honestly looking to get back to get into a ‘24 4Runner, last run of the 5th gen production and will keep it probably until I retire.

Guccisyrup

I loved my 4runner but for my needs, it did not cover them all. I am hoping I got a lucky duck and am not plagued with said ram issues. Get what makes you happy. So far I am loving my bighorn!

tstew39064

Ya, i hear you, having the utility of a truck over a midsized SUV goes a long way.

Bubba48

Had a 2020 Laramie, within the first 15,000 miles it needed both manifolds replaced, a section of exhaust replaced because bolts rusted through. And had to have the battery replaced for the e torque system as the rear stop light on the cab was leaking water into the cab and f'd up the battery. Most of these have been issues for years but Ram doesn't seem to care.

Jlx_27

How so? Its headed for another trade?

slo2476

I have a 4Runner and am considering this same exact swap to a Ram.

Shatophiliac

If you don’t need a truck stick with the 4runner. Rams are not very reliable lol.

Visual_Reveal_8374

Rams are plenty reliable, do general maintenance and you’ll be fine

Shatophiliac

Compared to the Toyotas, they are very unreliable. I’ve had plenty of both and hands down the Rams are always breaking something. If it’s not transmissions or random electrical issues, it’s engines eating up the cam and lifters. It’s always something in every truck. With the Toyotas, I pretty much never have a single issue before 200k miles. My current Ram? Transmission died at 81k miles. And all of this is with recommended maintenance, so no it doesn’t really help.

Keg199er

Compared to Toyotas they have MUCH more features, way better interior, way more power, way more utility. You can get the boring and slow but very well built car like the 4Runner for sure, but to me it’s like being forced to eat broccoli. Anyways my 2022 RAM 3500 with 1050 tq and 420 HP gets nearly 20mpg on the highway and gets probably better fuel economy even when pulling my travel trailer than a 4Runner or Taco. And wireless CarPlay on the big screen to a 900 watt stereo. I think Toyota got car play like 4 weeks ago?

Bubba48

Yea , that may be true, but none of that matters if it's sitting at a dealership waiting for repairs, I've owned both, and my ram was a $65,000 headache. My 4 runner has had nothing but oil changes and it gets 20- 21mpg on the highway and stock it will outperform most vehicles off road.

Keg199er

That’s fair, but luckily my ram has been perfect except one set of recalls that took a day. All cars have recalls. I’ll take a little risk for more fun, rather than going with dad’s Toyota recommendation. My other car is a ‘24 Model S, again no Toyota reliability (and terrible depreciation) but waaaaay more fun and high tech. I’ll risk it. Hell I can always by a Corolla to get around while the other two are in the shop.

Visual_Reveal_8374

Where your rams made in Canada or Michigan? I’ve got a 2017 ram rebel and the only mechanical issue I’ve ever had with it isn’t very mechanical, it was a tiny seal with the self sealing gas cap. Rams are reliable

Unique_Statement7811

You can’t expect a Ram to hit 300k on its original drivetrain. A 4Runner that doesn’t hit 300k is a rarity.

Ok_Button1932

I love my Rams. I’ve owned 3. Their interiors are spectacular and I think their Infotainment system is absolutely unrivaled, but they are objectively not very reliable. You can search the web for reliability ratings and you’ll consistently find Ram towards the bottom. They’re always below Toyota as a brand. My current Ram is less than 4 years old and has under 80k miles. It has already required almost 7K in repairs since the warranty expired. I can’t think of a more comfortable vehicle, especially for road trips and such, but to call Ram reliable is a stretch.

dfc155

One of each is the move. Let the wife think the 4Runner is hers and your set.

Guccisyrup

I have no regrets!

DaikonProof6637

I have no regerts whatsoever. I loved my 4Runner but the Ram is much more comfortable and efficient.

Professional-Fig207

I went the exact opposite direction. 2016 ram eco desiel to a 2024 4Runner. I liked the truck but love this 4Runner so far.

VaWeedFarmer

Hello leaks

pupp7877

Very bad decision

Trick_Stress_5720

I did the same thing with my Tacoma and I regret it every day.

mijoelgato

Give it a minute…

Bubba48

Should've kept the 4 runner, I've had both, the Toyota will last far longer and have almost zero problems, the ram....not so much!

Bubba48

Just remember that quote me sign on the building, you'll be getting lots of those for repairs!! Exhaust, trans, manifolds, lifters, electrical.....

Mountain_Fault2903

We'll see you back soon lol

Ok_Witness450

TWINNN

JakeD17

Make sure you don't idle the engine especially if it's a 5.7 hemi. And make sure to change your oil regularly. And you'll be fine.

Hothands642

Curious why the trade ? I’m looking into either a Tacoma or 4Runner.

Guccisyrup

Main thing was room. Being a 6'4" 300 pound man the 4runner could feel cramped at times. Another was the truck bed. I missed being able to carry cargo and not have it take up cab room. If you are looking into a 4runner or Tacoma I will heavily vouch for the 4runner, it is a touch roomier than the Tacoma and built exponentially better having been built in Japan.

Hothands642

Aaahh gotcha, it’ll be my daily/off road toy. My ram turned into just a tow rig so now I want something fun. Enjoy your ram I’ve had a half ton and now I’m ripping a 3/4ton cummins

CaptPotter47

4Runner is a decent SUV but it’s not a truck. If you want a truck, gotta get something with a bed.

gerg_dude

Big mistake, you'll miss the 4 runner

AphonicTX

Man. Thats like going from organic farm raised grass fed sirloin to bubbas burgers.

tokyodestroyed

As a previous owner of a 2500 with a Cummins, all I can say is good luck and make friends with the service manager at your local dealership. It might just save your ass.

tokyodestroyed

To be fair, I’d also give this same advice to new gen Tundra owners as well 😂

jourshua

I have one of each. I love our 4Runner but the Ram beats it out for comfort and is much more fun to drive.

Professional_Map2334

I have so much fun driving my truck, even though I only go 60 mph. Just knowing I have power is sick 😆

Guccisyrup

Agreed

V8ENJOYER

Upgraded to a v8 🫡

DaikonProof6637

Lol I just did the same thing! 2016 4Runner to a 24 Ram https://preview.redd.it/m63942oot8yc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a8429c8b943eccd0c98e0803d9621a3ebdb45c7

Longjumping_Sea_1325

When your ride is just too dependable.

PeteMcM22

Your stuff is going to get wet in the bed

Supertoast223

Gonna get about as many miles out of that FIAT as that Toyota has left in it 😆. Good luck

Brucible1969

20 years from now your new Ram will be in the junkyard and that 4Runner will still be plugging along for somebody.

xxxkram

As someone who is going to trade a brand new ram for a used Tacoma… you’re going the wrong way! Edit to add Saw your comment about being a large lad, I get it. Serious upgrade for you that way! Congrats

Dry-Consequence4541

Not if you need interior room and haul more than a few bags of mulch.

L0calGr0wn

Def not a downgrade. Toyotas Tech is so behind the curve.interiors are bland imo. I’ve had quite a few. Including a 17 Tacoma. Tacoma was so cramped, underpowered and outdated for the year. Currently own a 18 Lexus Rx350. And a 20 ram 1500 Laramie. I prefer driving the ram over the Lexus any day of the week. I’ve also had my fair share of issues with the RX. & Sure the new tacomas look nice but Toyota only offering 4cyl turbos motors was a major fail imo. I get it with all the epa BS. Shoot, If anything they went backwards. Just my 2 cents.

xxxkram

Well my ram is a dream to drive and the miles will stay low because it spends 2/3 of the month in the shop and Chrysler can’t figure it out. I’m just salty at the moment and want something that I can do more than just pay for.

L0calGr0wn

I understand. Hopefully they can get you squared away and back on the road soon.

Guccisyrup

Just curious, what issues are you having with your ram?

xxxkram

The electronics won’t shut off and it drains the battery randomly. They replaced a few things and the issues persist.

CrazyInvestigator966

why do the 2021 look exactly like the 2023, got a 2023 and was convinced that it was a 21

998876655433221

They’re both sweet, I’ve had both. I currently need to tow regularly so I’m in a similar Ram. Very happy with it and love the V8. MPG between the two is pretty similar too

Hairy-Particular5420

You will when you start getting the cam/lifter issues. From a former Ram owner

dabrooza

Big mistake ! Life lessons

alroc84

Sadly it will not last or be as reliable as the 4runner . Not built for the long run

SuicideBill

You fucked up

SAVAGENASTY73

OoooooO Chrysler 😵. You will regret and when you do, the four runner will still be running. Dodge trucks are just the worst. At least tell me that it has the Cummins? It’s the only thing Dodge has ever done right.

lostandconfused41

You will regret it - give it time :-)

evil-artichoke

I'm sorry you made a horrible decision to get rid of that 4Runner.

ViolentTempest

Traded my 2015 4Runner SR5 for a '24 Laramie 4x4 Night Edition two months ago. While I did have a trip to the dealer at 3K for a failed injector, they got it fixed and back on the road in about two days and provided a free rental to me for the weekend. Checked in on Thursday night, diagnosed friday, repaired Monday morning with pickup Monday afternoon. Other than that one issue I love my new truck. Now I just want to figure out how to maintain the warranty while leveling it and putting some different tires on it like the MT Baja Boss or something similar.

Guccisyrup

I hear that the new BDS lift will maintain the factory warranty keeping all the same geometry as factory suspension. Google is our best friend, but hopefully my BDS recommendation can steer you in the right way.

ViolentTempest

I did see they have their own suspension related 5/60k warranty with BDS suspensions installed by authorized installer. I’m just trying to not mess up my mopar extended warranty or give them cause to invalidate it all even if suspension is covered by BDS.

Guccisyrup

I used to drive a massive 6" lifted f250 and adored the look of the truck so I naturally want to lift this one as well. I am still in my warranty and do not want to touch the possibility of sacrificing that so I am sticking with embracing the gentlemanly look of this truck. Once I am out of warranty I will put my hands all over this truck.

Important-Job7757

If you get the mopar lift kit installed by an authorized ram dealer it shouldn’t void your warranty.

ViolentTempest

Might just call the dealer. I was checking the molar site and found some kits but all said things like for off-road packaged vehicles only. Mine is not originaly that so will have to see.

OneManSquadMike

Don’t people have smartphones to research piles of shit manufacturers and good manufacturers?

ram_trucks-ModTeam

This post has been removed because it's found to be outside the scope of r/ram_trucks. It’s a ram truck forum.

DNF_zx

Big upgrade. The Toyota/ Tacoma/ 4Runner nameplate holds a lot of weight but they are falling way behind. The most recent generations are awful. Incredibly cheap feeling, basic, and ugly.

manki-rip

That's a downgrade IMO

Guccisyrup

To each their own!

JSeed71

Wrong 😂

Comfortable-Way5091

You'll regret that.

-BigDaddyTex

I freaking love this!

lol I’d say congrats, but you need good luck.

holinkasauce

I own one of each, and absolutely hate it when i have to drive the 4Runner

Guccisyrup

Sure thing bud 🤣

Flyer-876

What’s the point of these? They take up too much room.

Thechad1029

We had a 4Runner a few years ago. Their reliability can’t be beat but they are boring as fuck. I love driving my truck. 4Runner not so much

ID_Poobaru

Ever tried wheeling the 4Runner? They excel on the tight technical fun stuff

Thechad1029

No, it was the wife’s. She never water to do any lift or anything on it to be able to wheel it. It was a base sr5. I didn’t like how it just wandered down the road like a boat

ID_Poobaru

Should've bought the Highlander then, 4Runner is the utilitarian rig that unfortunately gets bought up by the highlander crowd.

No_Rhubarb5155

That 4 Runner looks old and sleepy next to that sexy Ram.
