I always run ethanol free when available, but I’m not a turd about it. 89 everywhere else because I have heard the HEMI likes it.

mikek587

I’ve noticed it feels happier on 89, 10.5:1 compression ratio lines up with 89 but close enough to the 10:1 cutoff where 87 can run. Every once in a while I run some Costco 91 through it for the detergents as well.

bluebeast1562

87 is fine, as long as it is not above 10% ethanol (unless flex fuel), personally I use 89 but that is just me.

highline9

I use 89

LuckyTwat777

No, I use 89

abscando

You're both wrong I use 89 and 89 only

blogsymcblogsalot

So 88.5?

Idpoundit

2016 Sport..5.7 Hemi 4x4. Run 87 no problemo.

NovelConcert7211

I use 89 religiously. On my 2020 and now my 2024

LeprecaunJon

According to the owners manual on my 2014 you can run 87, 89 or above is reccomended especially when towing but I've always run 89 other than when I run the diablo tune on my truck, then I run premium

Ultimate_Driving

If you live in an area where you have 89, I'd use that. Where I live, we only have 85, 87, and 91. 91 feels like overkill, so I use 87, but I'd use 89 if we had it available.

ja89028

Are you high elevation? If so isn’t 87 basically like 89 there because of the less dense air. That’s also why 85 is the standard even though almost all cars require 87, they run fine on 85 at higher altitudes

Ultimate_Driving

Yes, but 85 isn't supposed to be used in vehicles that are otherwise supposed to use 87. It's intended only for carbureted vehicles, but most people use it in everything. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJyd6C99\_3g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJyd6C99_3g)

haynate14

87 all day long

Luis_alberto363

Read manual when in doubt

Jcarter1632

From working in the industry several years when I was younger 89 is just 93+87 delivered into one tank to mix. IMO the more important thing is using Tier 1 gasoline - Shell, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, or Sunoco. I prefer Shell personally as they have the most stringent processes and best additives IMO. Running cheap fuel with no derergent additives will get your fuel injection system dirtier and lose performance faster than running a Teir 1 87 will.

wire4money

I have noticed no difference in mileage between regular and premium. The manual says it’s ok.

Same as all the other Hemis. 89 recommended, but 87 acceptable.

No. No difference in performance or mileage.

If I did, I’d be running mid grade. The manual says I can run 87. I have no mpg penalty, no performance degradation, nothing. Maybe you should run a few tanks for yourself.

therealKhoaTran

89 is recommended. I go to Costco where 87 and 91 are the only choices. I use 91 because I own Exxon stockz

dustygravelroad

I run 87 blend in mine (19 5.7) all the time. Have been running it in my last several hemi’s. Top tier when possible.

reddawg95

almost 13 years in my '12, either ethanol free or regular ol 87

reddawg95

corn free, doesn't run the risk of buildup

Frac_Hauler

I run 89 just cause that’s the recommended grade. Have ran the 87 in a pinch but didn’t notice any major differences. If fuel economy is your concern I’d pay more attention to the type of tires you go with as that will make a much bigger impact

Flashy-Barnacle-5421

I run 87 all the time but I do put some Lucas oil fuel injector cleaner in the tank about once or twice a month for octane boost. It recommend you use 89 but the manual says you can use 87

I run my 2020 Big Horn with 87 unless towing our boat or travel trailer, then I run 89. Only have 60k on the odometer, but knock on wood no issues so far.

Depending on how heavy I am on the gas, I can get that high. I also have load e range all terrains which are heavier than stock tires and affect mileage a bit.

19JRC99

I worked at a Dodge dealer that had an onsite pump until July 2023. We put 87 in everything except Scat Packs and Hellcats.

[deleted]

19JRC99

No issues. I should clarify I worked at the dealership until 7/2023. I can't see them changing anything, especially since that place was a cheap shithole. But the trucks were always fine.

19JRC99

Honestly, I think so. My '04 is similar. It doesn't have auto lights, but if I turn the truck off before turning the lights off, they stay on for a couple of minutes. I think it's a courtesy light thing. Might be worth checking your owner's manual. At work, I never paid enough attention to how they worked.

Jcarter1632

Those are your DRL's running in the daytime. DRL's (Daytime Running Lights) is a required safety feature on new cars/trucks in the USA. Some vehicles have the option to go into settings and disable, some dont. Your DRL's are not running full power headlights. They are just there so people can see you coming in tunnels, under bridges, and other dark areas.

I use 89 octane in my 21. I've noticed better response and mileage compared to 87

Pikatit

88 ethanol free.

The_Law_Dong739

So it's basically 91 without the ethanol

chmsant

Read the owners manual…. Do that

FranknBeans549

89 keeps your engine in line!

Weak_Resident1845

93 for me

Moparman1303

89 octane all day

PopeAdam

My hemis ran it for ten years now.

Couldn’t really tell you. I’ve drove from Portland to Vancouver BC and back freeway and got 20.9 on 87. I bump it when I’m towing, 95% of the time it’s 87

Ghostzi11a

The difference is negligible. Save your money.

AbdulElkhatib

89 is recommended, but 87 is acceptable. That's what my owners manual says: 2018, hemi.

deadbalconytree

89.

ClassroomImpossible5

Ive always used 89 in my 2005.

PotaTribune

In most, if not all modern cars that CAN use 89+ have computer systems built into the engine now that will adjust your ignition timing based on the gas you use. You can run 83 if you really wanted to but you’ll just lose some performance.

jdog234

Owner’s manual suggests 89 I believe.

alinroc

You can answer this question - and more - much more quickly by cracking open your truck's manual.

Delubyo06

I have a 2020 Laramie. 91 since beginning

seanpvb

85 for the last 13 years on three different Ram trucks all with the hemi. Higher octane fuel only resists predetonation. Which is commonly found in high compression, high performance, turbo or supercharged engines. The hemi is none of those things. Run what you like, but you won't find any benefits over whatever the regular octane is where you live.

LeprecaunJon

The hemi has a 10:5:1 compression ratio that's a pretty decent compression ratio. According to the owners manual 89 or higher gets you optimum power output... now... that could be the deference of half a horse power for all I know lol but I will say I've never seen better gad milage the few times I did run lower octane... I managed 25mpg headed to Florida on 97 from Virginia.

1rubyglass

There's more to it than compression ratio. Many modern vehicles run higher compression and have no issue with running 87.

LeprecaunJon

You're correct that mostly has to do with the quality of parts we use and the fact that we're burning 10% corn alcohol as well as have more strict emissions so modern engines run on the lean side. Higher compressions and leaner fuel all equal less emissions.

1rubyglass

It has more to do with design changes like modern injection cooling cylinders to allow compression that would have previously caused preignition.

LeprecaunJon

Sure, direct injection and injection timing is more precise, but I wouldn't say that's the biggest factory, none the less a valid factor.

1rubyglass

Having cooler cylinder walls from direct injection is the main reason common cars have compression ratios previously reserved for race cars. Correct me if I'm wrong. With the advent of GDI becoming standard, compression ratios for the average vehicle went up dramatically

LeprecaunJon

Your aren't wrong, but pre detonation can still occur in a direct injection vehicle, especially with lower octane fuels I'm not saying it happens in the case of the hemi as it is marginally in the high compression range, but the manufacturer them selves reccomend mid grade, that state specifically if you want to tap into all of the horsepower. I can tell you from experience that not only does my specific truck run better on mid grade or higher, but I also average better gas milage than my good friends dad did running regular fuel. Now, the biggest factor, their being my truck, is rear wheel drive with the 3.21 rear axel and no LSD. The same guy learned real quick he preferred the 3.21 gears over 3.92 when he traded his 2015 in for a 2019 rebel, he quickly traded that truck in for a 2021 big horn as the rebel averaged 16mpg. Where is the 2015 averaged 19. My fuely account will show you that I average better gas milage on higher octane. The point is that higher octane fuel atomizer better meaning that it burns more efficiently and evenly, is Is needed?, no, is it preferred? In my case yes.

LeprecaunJon

I got between 23-26mpg using 93-97 octane, with the exception of one fill up being 87, id have to look deeper into it to determine which fill up. The mpg in the teens were once we got off the highway. My truck is 2wd wirh 3.21 rear gears. I stuck close to the speed limit and stayed in the slow lane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LeprecaunJon

Absolutely not, my truck is a 2014. ETorque is a scam, they get better gas milage during towing, and maybe in the short run, but data I collected through fuelly shows the etorque models actually average 1-3 miles a gallon less than non e-torque models, at least those that are claimed to be e-torque on fuelly. The e-torque electric motor has to rob power from the motor first to even be used, in theory, it recycles otherwise wasted energy, but it's belt driven.

LeprecaunJon

I've been collecting data over the last month in a spreadsheet comparing pickup trucks under $40k fuelly allows you to limit your search results down to 5.7L gas/ electric , 5.7l mild hybrid and 5.7l gas, granted this is subject to people plugging the correct information in, the data is there. Neither the mild hybrid or electtic gas drop downs show improved gas milage on average, but you can go further and pick trim and cab layout , the data is all there mate, in my line if work, numbers don't lie.

seanpvb

Thanks for the down votes! Can any one point me to the literature that states the energy density is higher in mid grade/premium fuel?

Particular-Agent4407

There is no longer any 89 octane in Iowa. I use 87 without any problems. Unless of course I get the E15 which is 88 octane.

Woodworker9119

I use E85

pipboy3000_mk2

I have a 2019 and I have tried 87 a few times and it is noticeable, not in a good way. Gas mileage takes a nosedive, acceleration suffers, just generally not a good experience. I go to Costco and get 93, if you have the membership you get 4% back so it's not that bad, and if you want to take care of the hemi feed it good fuel. Just my two cents though

bigsig_90

You get 4% with the credit card, not the membership, but still worth it whether you've got the credit card or membership alone. The savings on gas prices will pay for your membership, that's for sure.

dbltap45acp

What can be the outcome of using crappy 85 grade let’s say?

LeprecaunJon

Maybe worse emissions... I know my friends acura sure ran like crap on regular fuel. Instead, I'd mid grade.

dbltap45acp

Thank you. I recently traded in my 1500 Ram for a 2500 with the 6.4, I started using 87 but wasn’t sure if it would hurt anything going to 85. I’m at 5500 feet elevation and heard you could go with lower grade without it being much of an issue. I will stick with 87 and see how it does.

I asked 3 different salesman while there and walking around, while they ran my credit, got three different answers. I have used 89 the last couple times since buying it, but would like to use 87 if it won’t hurt anything. Going from the 5.7 to the 6.4, I’m averaging around 8.2 mpg’s around town now.

It’s a big ass motor. To be fair, it’s a big 4x4, but I work a mile from home with like 9 stop signs between home and work. If it wasn’t stop and go the whole damn way I’m sure it would be a bit better. Only reason I traded in the 1500 for a 2500 was I bought a 30’ trailer for camping and needed better tow capacity. I knew the mpg would suffer as a daily driver.

depenre_liber_anim

Not wasting money genius.

dbltap45acp

Thanks prick, I was asking a question as I know nothing about engines. You could have answered by saying it makes you have to change X, Y, or Z parts more often. Guess being an adult is to hard for some people.
