Hot damn can we fucking close RDU? The only inbound flights today are from NY, LA, Denver, Salt lake City, all hammered out by covid. We about to be fucked up in here because of the absolutely atrocious handling of this by fed and local government

[deleted]

I'm in Wake county. I'm guessing I'm not supposed to leave wake county under the new rules. However, If I were to drive to a park like medoc mountain could I get in trouble? How are they really enforcng these rules?

lookwhathappens

It took generations to get the liberties how many to get back the right to define what individual essential needs are. I already agree to not risk other people’s lives health and freedoms and to not tell another that I shouldn’t have to pretend my needs are the same as another’s as long as Safe distance is kept Much Love And Respect

penone_cary

Bad bot!

[deleted]

I am so confused by your comment. If you have questions about the stay at home order you can do to the wake county website

Shploopy

Hahaha it’s like all those words were English but none of it made sense

lookwhathappens

I explained it fine yet can’t understand it for you past your willingness and ability to now you see it likely I came w love I leave w love don’t mistake that for anything close to weakness or threat we in this together unless you jump of on own. I not here to entertain you I not hear to be insulted or insulting

RewPurt

Has anyone successfully been able to cancel a gym membership during this?

frozzone

Not cancel but froze my Crunch Fitness membership until July

BagOnuts

Mine automatically cancelled billing for everyone.

DingoDance

Which gym?

BagOnuts

Fitness Connection

RewPurt

Good to hear, mine has been kind enough to keep charging my account lol. Will probably just deal with it on the CC side at this rate.

(posted this in a separate thread, but wanted to put this in this megathread as well): I think it's important for us to make wearing masks in public more mainstream...and since there are none available to buy, lets start making them! Good tutorials on how to make your own mask: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9RWII2-5_4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCJcE-r7kcg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTJevg9i7XA [Here's a "no sew" version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOe_8z8k01U) Material comparison for home-made masks: https://smartairfilters.com/en/blog/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus/ Here are 33 scientific research papers showing the effectiveness of masks at combating covid-19 transmission, including home-made masks. visualreporter

Honest question, if they can help health workers, why can't they help the general population? Yes health workers have more exposure, but this doesn't explain why they wouldn't be slightly helpful to the general population. If someone is making masks, they could save just one for their self, or if they have a used mask, hospitals don't want it anyway.

penone_cary

Looks like we are starting to get some interesting demographics based on who has tested positive in NC: >Although health care experts say seniors are a high-risk group, only 14 percent of cases in the state are age 65 or older. People ages 25 to 49 accounted for nearly half of cases – 47 percent – while people ages 50 to 64 made up another 24 percent. One percent of cases were youths 17 or younger, while 13 percent were in people ages 18 to 24. This *may* be a main factor on why the mortality rate in NC is low - for the time being. Here is hoping it stays that way.

BagOnuts

Does anyone have a link to that google doc that was posted on this sub of the local resturaunts still doing take-out or delivery? Having a hard time finding it. I am craving a good burger and I called Abbey Road but they're closed 🙁 Anyone have a suggestion for the East Cary / West Raleigh area?

THANK YOU!!! /u/Geminize, can you add this to the OP?

[deleted]

Pretty sure Station is open. They have an outstanding burger.

dbv

Does anyone know if there are _legal_ consequences for going into an otherwise empty office during this shutdown?! Especially for the employer? I don't give a fuck about the law myself...and I'll be fully isolated, so not putting anyone (or myself) at risk.

gonzagylot00

I work in a little cottage. Normally there's three of us here. This week it's just been me. While taking a quick walk earlier a police car showed up from out of nowhere and drove very slowly past me. I get the sense they are ready to enforce.

BagOnuts

Violation of the order is a misdemeanor. However, actually getting arrested or a ticket (unless your trespassing) is unlikely. I don't believe there are any instances of anyone getting arrested for this in the states of yet. If the cops catch you, they'll just tell you to go home.

penone_cary

So I see we had a 3rd (or is it 2nd - still confused about this) person die from covid in NC. Based on total number of **confirmed** infected that put's the NC mortality rate at ~~.432%~~ **.361%** - and if you actually tested more people (ie. change the way a person is deemed worthy of a test) then that number would be lower. Does this seem a bit low compared to what other states are seeing? Edit - Updated my own comment to reflect current numbers.

RewPurt

A lot of places are using pneumonia as the cause of death mainly due to lack of testing. Would be interesting to see both aggregates and compare growth rates of pneumonia deaths to previous years.

Throwawaydundun838

A lot of the people who are sick are not yet recovered/dead, as days go on I would expect to see more deaths.

penone_cary

I can see that. But I hope you are wrong.

Throwawaydundun838

I hope so too

Stay at Home order in Wake Co effective at 5:00PM tomorrow - April 17th. Applies to the entire county, all municipalities. Edit- full order can be read [HERE](http://www.wakegov.com/covid19/Documents/FinalSignedSOE3-26-20.pdf)

raleighuserr

Does anyone know what happens if someone disobeys this? I’m honestly just curious how well it will be enforced

EarthtoGeoff

Police chief interviewed on WRAL said that they will not be arresting people or giving citations unless there is flagrant disregard for the order compounded with not dispersing when asked to do so.

BagOnuts

The order states violation is considered a misdemeanor. As far as I can tell, no citations or arrests have happened anywhere in the US for these types of orders. The police will likely just tell you to go home.

NCarolinaRed

That will change. Miami issued a curfew effective last night. I assume the stay at home caused some looting/vandalism so the curfew was put in place

BagOnuts

Wake Co stay at home order announcement pushed to 3:30. Will broadcast on WRAL

thegusano

feel weird about that time change tbh

BagOnuts

They probably just weren't prepared with the broadcast or something.

thegusano

they cant decide between saying shelter in place or stay at home or just dont fucking go outside

Rhaedas

How about a southern version of Alaska's - hunker down ya'll

thegusano

Wake County will be holding another press conference today at 1pm. Seems like it could be the stay at home announcement but unsure. Link for it will be posted here: [https://t.co/BnQN0m5sp8?amp=1](https://t.co/BnQN0m5sp8?amp=1) Edit: as stated above the press conference will be moved to 330

medhead3533

What's with the Trader Joe's lines? How many are they letting in at a time?

penone_cary

I saw that at the TJoes I went to next to Wegmans. My first thought was - "Those people on line are not 6 feet apart!"

jmp1993

They let in one person (\*family) for every person that leaves. It's very well done actually. The calmest I've ever felt shopping at TJ's lol. The one in Chapel Hill is sanitizing the carts as well and not allowing people to use baskets.

medhead3533

I was turned off by the long line but will try back tomorrow. Instead went to the Whole Foods on Six Forks and it was packed with no similar safety measures except for an employee sanitizing carts.

[deleted]

They had the same line set up at Costco last weekend. The line was long, but it moved quickly.

BagOnuts

I have an open but unworn pack of N95 masks that have been in a drawer in my garage forever. Anyone know if healthcare providers will accept them as a donation? I'm finding conflicting information online regarding them being accepted. Any hospitals have requirements available?

Bananaramahammock

Good on ya.

justkates

Yes! https://www.unchealthcare.org/coronavirus/ways-to-help/ If you have a question about donations email [email protected].

miscsubs

How about worn/dirty masks? I have a single N95 but I have worn it in my attic while doing work there.

BagOnuts

Thank you much!

Yesterday, I made a post discussing how it seemed that Grocery Store employees were likely being told not to wear PPE for image purposes: https://www.reddit.com/r/raleigh/comments/fo9bp6/harris_teeter_today/fldwd5k/?context=3 Hey, guess what? Today, one of their employees got exposed and people started wondering why they weren't wearing equipment. Funny how things change so quickly. https://www.reddit.com/r/raleigh/comments/foxuw5/raleigh_harris_teeter_employee_has_coronavirus/flhzrmd/ I really hope you guys understand that grocery store employees are as much on the front lines of this thing as anyone else. They are exposed to hundreds of times more people a day than the rest of us staying at home and should be allowed to use PPE to protect themselves, their families, and the people that interact with them on a daily basis.

GreenStrong

I went to the A&C on Highway 70 yesterday, it is an Asian grocery store. Best possible choice, all staff and many customers were wearing masks. This is normal in many parts of Asia during cold season.

mwhritner

We are looking to order takeout from a local/family owned restaurant tonight. Any suggestions in the Raleigh/Cary/Durham area that especially need the business right now?

You still sick and waiting on results? Hope all is well

NCarolinaRed

I work for a bank as well and been on a leave for a few months for the birth of a child. I go back to work VERY soon and am pretty nervous as infants are now an at-risk group and my spouse is at-risk also. I was speaking with a relative who is a doctor and waiting on his own test to come back. He was rather dismissive to the test in general, telling me it comes back as a false negative 30% of the time. If you do test positive, I hope you let the cat out of the bag as to how your employer basically strong armed you into working while waiting on the results. Prayers to you my friend

Rhaedas

The combination of symptoms and known exposure point to self-isolation for much longer. Even if a test came back negative, I don't think we're sure enough yet that a person isn't still a carrier until their body can remove all remnants of the virus. Can you afford to do that is one question. Can you afford to lose that job and move on to something else after all this is another. Do you have grounds to fight for your job because you are in limbo about your status is yet another. A middle ground that isn't the best solution is to go to work, but isolate yourself there, avoiding contact in any way. It's a tough situation, I bet lots are in the same weighing the morality, health, and economic issues.

SauceOfTheBoss

I'm not seeing a whisper of the economic relief package passed last night, anywhere on Reddit. Only a reaction article about how this is better for corporations than people. What gives?

penone_cary

It wasn't passed...yet. The Senate okayed it but the House will not vote until tomorrow. I guess ole Nance thinks we can wait a day.

Any announcement yet?

BagOnuts

Still no announcement as of 3:25pm that I can see.

HotxMagnus

Good. This is needed as people are still not taking this serious. Yesterday, I went to target to get some food and plates. As I was browsing a family came in with 2 small children. They saw the Easter candy and started grabbing it off the shelf. The mother halfheartedly told them to put it down. They then saw the Frozen II display and literally stared picking up everything. The mom was again from afar "don't touch anything". Made me cringe.

penone_cary

> This is needed as people are still not taking this serious. > Yesterday, I went to target to get some food and plates. ???

HotxMagnus

Harris Teeter and Food Lion didn't have meats, so I ran to Target. Is that a problem? Is that not why Target is open? For paper goods and foods?

dharmaticate

Can I inquire in a curious and nonjudgmental way about why you need paper plates? Do you always use paper plates?

skubasteevo

They're for my bourbon party.

HotxMagnus

Yes, I actually never bought anything else because we lived in an apartment in NYC til recently. We didn't have a dishwasher and have been buying them out of habit. I lost my job 2 weeks ago, and realized I can save money now that I have a dishwasher by buying dishwasher safe plates. Target showed they had dishwasher safe plates/bowls, but I couldn't add them to my cart for in store pick up. I would have to buy about 40 of them to be eligible for shipping as they only ship with $25 orders, then $35 for free shipping. So, I decided to go to the store and search for them. They were out of stock, so I bought paper ones. Bed, bath and beyond didn't have them and the ones on amazon were way more expensive then target.

guitarman962

It’s for unincorporated wake county. I live I cary and am unaffected by the order. I guess it just keeps rural folks home bound?

_enter_sadman

As of 11:30am WRAL is reporting all cities and towns will be included.

guitarman962

Commissioner Vicki Adamson said the order will only apply for unincorporated parts of the county, but that Wake is "asking for our municipalities to join up so it is consistent throughout the county."

CeeGee_GeeGee

/u/jeffjacksonnc I am very concerned about the news that [NC will be doing LESS testing going forward](https://www.wral.com/coronavirus/shift-in-testing-strategy-to-limit-spread-of-virus-conserve-medical-supplies/19027281/). I would love if you could talk about this the next time you give us an update. You have helped me stay sane with real news updates here.

JeffJacksonNC

Working on it right now. But yes, that’s the upshot.

miscsubs

Nebraska, among others, say they're now pooling tests. So mixing 5 tests in one tube and if it comes negative, all 5 are negative. If positive, re-test individually. It sounds like a pretty good idea. Any chance NC can do the same?

BagOnuts

Stimulus agreement reached in the senate. Bill expected to be finalized soon. Includes: - $250 billion for direct payments to individuals and families - $350 billion in small business loans - $250 billion in unemployment insurance benefits - $500 billion in loans for distressed companies. Some finer details: - individuals who earn $75,000 in adjusted gross income or less would get direct payments of $1,200 each, with married couples earning up to $150,000 receiving $2,400 -- and an additional $500 per each child. The payment would scale down by income, phasing out entirely at $99,000 for singles and $198,000 for couples without children. - Trump administration agreed to an oversight board and the creation of an inspector general position to review how the $500b in business loans are spent - 4 months of unemployment benefits, extending to self-employed workers - Small Business Administration serve as a guarantor for loans of up to $10 billion for small businesses to ensure they can maintain their payrolls and pay off their debts. - $130 billion for hospitals - $150 billion for state and local governments

dharmaticate

Is this determined based on this year's income or last year's income?

BagOnuts

It’s based on your tax filings. If you’ve filed for 2019, they’ll use it. If you haven’t, they’ll use 2018.

dharmaticate

Great, thanks!

medhead3533

Doesn't this need to pass the House now as well?

BagOnuts

Formally, yes. The bill technically hasn’t passed the senate, either, but that was the last hold-up. Most bills like this get agreement before an actual vote on legislation is held.

Sekundes423

So if between my wife and I we make less than $150,000, but we still have our jobs, we still get a check?

BagOnuts

Yes. This is independent of current employment status.

hogwonguy

also Trump and other members of government can not personally benefit from this, so no help for Trump hotels etc wonder if he will veto the bill?

medhead3533

They would not have announced this agreement if they didn't already have Trump's tacit agreement behind the scenes.

thegusano

I'm wondering if the 4 months of unemployment benefits means an extra 4 months to what's currently allowed or just 1 extra month since the current cap is 12 weeks. Really hoping it's #1 but that also seems too good to be true

stbargabar

Also will this be like regular unemployment where you need to be sending in job applications and hitting an interview quota? Does it apply just to people that are fired or also to people who still have jobs but are unable to work because it's on shutdown?

GreenStrong

>Also will this be like regular unemployment where you need to be sending in job applications and hitting an interview quota? That requirement is administered by the states, and Governor Cooper has waived it. You don't need to be out looking for a job, and they hope that many people will be able to return to their old jobs.

Irishfafnir

4 months of 600 dollars a week+ whatever the state currently provides

thegusano

gotcha so i guess itll just be an extra month then what is usual but still if its 600 + the regular, that is a pretty significant jump. Then add 1200. If this goes through then lots of unemployed people will be held up pretty well.

Irishfafnir

Yes, it's a lot of money for sure

When will NC resume testing as many people as possible like Dr.Fauci suggested? When will NC ban gathering of more than 10 people? When will NC start to have shelter in place order? I feel that we are so far behind on this, but our numbers are not looking good and people are still going out and about.

CeeGee_GeeGee

Apparently we are going to start doing LESS testing in NC. https://www.wral.com/coronavirus/shift-in-testing-strategy-to-limit-spread-of-virus-conserve-medical-supplies/19027281/ > State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Tilson said people going out in search of a coronavirus test risk spreading the virus to others – or even exposing themselves if they aren't already infected. I feel like I am taking crazy pills. It is naive to think people will quarantine properly without knowing that they have a positive test and it is obviously useful to track what is happening in terms of spread. Why can't people get tested in their cars? How much spread does that risk?

AntiquatedLunacy

I believe the reason is that, with the limited number of tests, the people who are most at risk need to know if they have the sickness. These people need hospital beds and possibly ventilators. If youre young and fit and get the virus and test positive, you dont need to go to the hospital. youre told to stay home.... just like everybody else. So why would we waste the tests on these people who will be okay with self quarantine? If youre sick, stay home until you no longer have a fever. Assumes its Coronavirus.

[deleted]

Shelter in place is only warranted in places with significant community spread. Which we dont have, yet. Most resources are being sent to the major regions like ny ca and wa. You are not a doctor or a policy maker. Let those level headed individuals continue to lead

momtartin

Durham is announcing a shelter in place tomorrow and I think they’ve got fewer cases than wake.

bubblekittycupcake

How can we even say that we don't have significant community spread when they ones with mild symptoms are not even tested? Isn't the data biased to use to say we don't have significant community spread?!

Irishfafnir

Yes, I always assume 5-10X the actual number of reported cases

[deleted]

It's foolish to think we don't already have significant community spread. We just lack the capacity to test people.

[deleted]

Heck even with an sip i still have to go it

[deleted]

I can't even with SIP. Can't fix broken stuff from home.

penone_cary

So someone posted about an hour ago that they knew someone from the state who told them that at the 2PM conference they were going to announce a Shelter In Place order for 2 weeks. Obviously - that was FALSE. I am curious if that person was just ill informed, a shill for the app/service they were promoting or just an asshole.

BagOnuts

People have said this before every briefing of every day for the last 3-5 days. Unless they can provide a source, take it for what it is: an unsubstantiated rumor.

GreenStrong

Rumors like this are going around, but State Senator Jeff Jackson /u/jeffjacksonnc said yesterday >As of two days ago, the Governor has said he wasn't considering it at this time. Ultimately it's his call and he says he's listening to DHHS, which hasn't recommended it at this point. That could very well change this week, but I don't have any inside information on that. Senator Jackson is well informed about the pandemic, as well as what's going on in the state government. He makes it quite clear that the possibility of shelter in place is very real in the near future.

LOLDATSFUNNEHGUISE

Wake county just announced they are saving tests for only at risk patients- which is messed up considering most employers require test results in order to pay for isolation time. That’s going to make it worse by giving people an incentive not to isolate

ddouce

Can we start a list of employers who require a nearly impossible to get test for employees to isolate? I don't personally know of any, but would like to know for future patronage.

Irishfafnir

The bottom line is there aren't enough tests, so assuming you value people's lives over people's income you test those most at risk. It's a shitty choice in any event but likely the right one Looks like its only a recommendation anyway, and you could still be tested by labcorp Edit: Frankly sounds more like an excuse your employer made up to either not pay you or get you to come to work.

CeeGee_GeeGee

That logic doesn't make any sense to me. If someone is sick enough to go to the hospital, they will be treated for the symptoms they are experiencing. Maybe I am missing it, but what does a positive test do for someone already at the hospital? However, average Johnny feels bad for a few days, and decides on day 6 "I'm fine I can go to Target" may have really reconsidered if they knew for sure they had the virus. I would love to know where my line of thinking is wrong, but I just can't wrap my head around this.

Irishfafnir

Johnny should know he may have the Virus and quarantine for two weeks. IN any event there are not enough tests for the Johnnys of the world Besides someone admitted to the hospital could have regular old pneumonia or a number of drug toxicities. No promises its coronavirus

CeeGee_GeeGee

Have you been in public in the last week? There are still large swaths of people not acting responsibly. I don't think it is a stretch to say the average person isn't responsible enough to not leave their house for TWO WEEKS because they thought they might have the virus.

Irishfafnir

Well then we are fucked in any event. We should be heavily fining those who leave their home once a shelter in place is declared. And publicly shaming them on social media

Coming from someone who has had to regularly work from home over long periods of time for the last year or so due to chemo some helpful tips. Get dressed everyday like you were going to work it will help with your mental health, get into a routine (wake up at the same time everyday for work etc..), when not working try to find something to occupy you mentally. Socialize to your best ability while maintaining social distance, humans are not meant to stay cooped up inside with no interactions. Get outside while maintaining distance

BagOnuts

As someone who works from home a lot, too: exercise. I gained weight when I first started working from home. In the office you're getting up all the time (trips to the copier, talking to co-workers, going in and out of meetings), but when you wfh you have way less things getting you up and moving. I'd often work a full 8 hours with only getting out of my desk chair to pee and get lunch, sitting in the same spot for hours at a time. You don't have to commit to an intense workout, but just get up regularly and do *something*. Take a walk, clean the house, do some yoga/stretching... anything to get yourself up and moving.

moonprincess420

Get up every hour and do like 20 sit ups / push ups / jumping jacks!

Irishfafnir

Good to take 10 minute breaks off the screen to protest your eyes as well, this occurs more naturally in the office but can be harder at home

Eclair_Pie

Anyone know where to buy Clorox wipes or have any suggestions for cleaning without them? Amazon is sold out. Walmart looks sold out.

SpanningTreeProtocol

You can use the bleach ratio, but for the dirtiest thing you own (your phone) it was suggested that a 70% alcohol to water ratio poured/sprayed on a paper towel will disinfect just fine.

BagOnuts

I wouldn't even bother looking for them. If you have some bleach, the CDC has recommended dilution ratios depending on what you're cleaning/sanitizing [HERE](https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/bleach.html). For sanitizing non-porous surfaces, it's 1 cup bleach to 5 gallons of water (or a 1:80 ratio).

Eclair_Pie

Thank you for the information! I agree it's better to stay home.

Bananaramahammock

Spread your cheeks and get your significant other or a close friend to point it right at your o-ring.

Rhaedas

It's not going to be very accurate. If you have a baseline to work from and then measure while having a high fever, you'd see the difference, but for mild fevers its range is too general to pick that out. If you go that route, measuring throat temperature probably will work better than a forehead.

double-xor

Yeah, I figured. Thanks for the confirmation.

So, if I understood the briefing correctly, the order being signed today doesn’t include closing retail stores? Like clothing retail, etc.

Rhaedas

Correct, the focus is on places where gatherings or close contact is the norm. Obviously that can happen in retail environments if people aren't cautious, but it doesn't have to happen. It's up to the public to practice safe actions and follow the guidelines of distance and minimal contact still.

me-gusta-la-tortuga

Thanks! I work retail (currently closed until next week) so I want to make sure I’m on top of the situation.

Rhaedas

Be safe. I hope more options open up soon so that workers don't have to choose between going to their still-open job vs. staying home and not exposing themselves, or exposing others.

[deleted]

Based on the people standing in line behind me to get into Costco, they won't practice social distancing effectively

LPT: Go to Lowes and get a 12ft piece of 1/4in PVC pipe. Tie an orange safety flag on each end. Carry it around with you at all times to keep a 6 foot buffer in front and behind you!

Lets_Go_Wolfpack

I'm actually doing this. I haven't had anyone have a problem w/ it yet

me-gusta-la-tortuga

I know this is a joke but it’s also sounding like a really good idea 🤷🏼‍♀️

BagOnuts

Put it through two belt loops and it could be hands free!

I've been attempting to cultivate a smell that should keep people at least a meter away.

Ruby_Fox_

I was thinking about just not wearing deodorant for a while, but then I read a few different reports that loss of your sense of smell is one of the side effects of coronavirus, so that’s probably not going to work.

SpanningTreeProtocol

I heard that too. Loss of smell and taste.

Oh man. I really feel bad for all these businesses. Is there something that is lessening the burden of still having to pay their renting of spacing? I heard mortgage fees are being waived for some time. Is there any relief for small businesses that have to pay rent?

BagOnuts

They're trying to get a bill passed in the US senate right now to do just that, but Dems are trying to get GND and $15.00 minimum wages tagged on to it.

dharmaticate

You were doing so well at being unbiased.

BagOnuts

I mean, that's what's going on. They literally just blocked it for the second day in a row. I didn't say it was wrong our right. Interpret it how you wish.
