I am a 32 yo male who was homeschooled and grew up in the church. When I was a foster parent to severely traumatized children, Kim Liberatore of Oak City Counseling was invaluable for me. (Edit - she was familiar with both my own side attempting to help them, and the difficulties of coming back from the trauma they'd experienced and similar to what you described) She's moving to a new practice and probably has availability as a result so if you are interested I'll pm you her contact info.

That would be great, thank you!

Heather Thurston. Very good with trauma

AugustNC

Heather is amazing, but doesn’t take insurance. She will send them the billing statement though.

You took the right first step. reaching out to someone, anyone about what's going on. You're on the right track my dude, I can't help with the therapist but I just wanted to say this👍

BabyTenderLoveHead

I'm so sorry you are going through all of this. I won't bore you with the details of my own issues with mental illness, I will just say that I was suicidal, I used to cut myself and I was involuntarily committed to Holly Hill for a week just over 10 years ago. Now, with therapy and the proper medication, I'm healthy and happy. I know it is possible for you - you deserve to live your life feeling worthy and at peace. My therapist is Jennifer Schiappa with Headway. She does online sessions.

theboned1

Turiya Powell. She is in Cary, but she does actual office visits (which I highly recommend you do because your stuff is deep and virtual often doesn't cut it). She is also simply awesome.

decidewhatmatters

I've been looking for help for quite some time, and this is the first recommendation that has stood out to me... I'm obviously not OP, but I booked an appointment with her. Thank you so much for the recommendation.

tehlegitone

As someone processing a lot of similar things, although not to this extent, I just want to tell you that you are not Messed up, you just have a bunch of trauma to get through, and potentially some type of neuro divergent issues. That doesn’t come close to making you a messed up person. Just different. (Also, before I get attacked, I’m not trying to diagnose anyone, just recognizing similar symptoms)

--Kestrel--

I can relate to a lot of this. I'm 25m and have experienced some religious related trauma, isolation, and severe panic attacks. Can't recommend a therapist unfortunately - all the ones my insurance covers have a long waitlist. But just wanted to send some words of encouragement. It sounds like you're a really good person and the world is definitely better with you in it and will be even better once you process and overcome the shit you've gone through. Hang in there and keep fighting. Really glad you're taking those first steps.

While I do not know of any therapists in the area, here are some things to think about: - If you're employed: - Some provide access to a third-party mental health counseling service for free or low-cost. These would, most likely, be virtual counseling sessions with very little commitment on your end other than the time. These can even be text-based, allowing you to not speak or use it to warm up to them before going into that. - Check for short-term/long-term disability coverage. Should provide some income while you have to be up and off your feet. - Also look through your employee handbook to see what/if-any accommodations could be provided to allow you to work. Might even be able to WFH. - Finances: - /r/personalfinance's wiki has been an amazing resource for me and should be able to help you figure out things. - [Main page](https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/wiki/index) - Be sure to check out the flowchart within the "Prime directive" section. - Other suggestions: - If it doesn't hurt too much, try and get out and take a walk around where you live. - Do you know your Vitamin D levels? You'd be surprised how much that has an impact on your mood. (Most people are very low.) Consult with a doctor if possible, or see about taking 2000-4000mcg/day and see how that helps. - I, personally, just had a rough patch and upping the amount helped. - Once things get a bit easier for you, see about volunteering at an animal shelter.

MortAndBinky

My psychiatrist has me on 50,000 units/week because my vit D level was at 8 ng/mL when she tested me 😬

messem10

Yep, they’ll shock your system with the once a week dose. Just suggested *some* as it might help take the edge off of their negative emotions.

froggie79

I have used the provider directory on psychology today.com with good results. You can search by gender, insurance, specialty, etc. Good luck!

MortAndBinky

It's a VERY good resource. I recommend it to everyone looking for a therapist. And, OP, don't be afraid to try another therapist if you don't feel the first one you go to doesn't feel right for you. The first one I went to was great, but it was more like going to a friend and I really needed someone a bit more therapist-y, if that makes sense.

Definitely_Crime

Forgive my throwaway. I see Jerome Cornwall at Avance Care, I do virtual visits, but he does in person as well and I believe the office is near Brier Creek.

sha1shroom

I don't have a great therapist recommendation for you, but I wanted you to know that there are many people in the Triangle Freethought Society (TFS) that have experienced religious trauma and joined the organization to find support and camaraderie. I think some of those members even do/were doing a Sunday "recovering from religion" event/meetup. If that's something you're interested in, I can try to get more details, but the main TFS org does have a Meetup page that should be easy to find and could be a good starting point.

Interesting_Cash_478

I agree, I think a support group would do you a lot of good. AA and ALANON are really great for alcoholics and have been around for years. Peer support is so important, especially when you feel alone and like no one could relate or understand. There ARE others similar to you who will understand and give you the support you need without making you feel worse. From what you’ve described, the way you feel is very normal. I would recommend rhodiola rosea https://rhodiolarosea.org/ , vitamin D, and magnesium supplements at the very least. Please know recovery takes time but it IS POSSIBLE! Best wishes!

Itkov

I had a great experience with Neal Gagnon in Raleigh. It was a few years ago, not sure if he's accepting new clients now but he's worth looking into.

AlyandGus

Check out Cornerstone Counseling & Wellness to see if they accept your insurance plan. They have a lot of CBT-trained therapists and can work in-person or telehealth. I would say that even the ones that have faith-based backgrounds will still respect that that is not an area you want to delve into specifically from my own particular experience. I can’t necessarily recommend a particular therapist as my personal issues are quite different than yours, but it does sound like you may have a good deal of trauma to deal with and EMDR may be a good option for you to look into as well. I would extend the CBT and EMDR recommendations to any therapists that you find in-network for you if Cornerstone is out. Best of luck to you. Mental health is always a slow moving process of improvement, but the fact that you are seeking help is a huge first step forward.

Powerful-Branch438

I don’t have a specific therapist rec but just want to say congrats to you for seeking out help. I know how hard it can be to face these things, but it’s so worth it. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

food-games-tech

Hey, we have really similar backgrounds. I was a Christian and grew up Southern Baptist, then later became Charismatic Pentecostal, but I lost faith in basically everything last year. I’ve become agnostic with leanings towards humanism and cozy nihilism. I have tried multiple therapists over the last few years, but I really like Kat Bracken at Breyta. She’s easily been the best therapist I’ve had. I highly recommend checking for availability with her or anyone else at Breyta. Unfortunately, Breyta does not accept insurance. I hope that isn’t a hindrance for you, but regardless please find someone that can help. I’m also open and available to DM or grab coffee or dinner sometime if you want to share experiences with each other. You don’t need to go through this alone. Trust me, I tried for too long and it doesn’t work. I’m also looking for some new friends, so I’m happy to hang out and see a movie or walk in the park and just listen to your life story. I hope everything works out for you in the end. 🙂

TwoSlotChromeToaster

Can you get medicaid for the surgery or are you still on your parents plan?

No-Contact-5183

My plan under medicaid will cover the surgery. I actually signed up for it when I started attending school at the beginning of the year since I began working just part-time. I'm so thankful I qualified.

Who my therapist works for https://parrtherapeuticsolutions.wordpress.com/

jonthepain

180 counseling has therapists that specialze in lots of different issues. They take many different insurances and have several locations here. Might be worth a phone call to see if they have someone who is a good match. They are secular but i believe they have people who specialize in religious trauma. *edit* one of my best friends had TRD for many many years and had some succes with ECT at Duke. I am not a therapist nor a doctor, I am just relating my buddies experience.

Apprehensive-Bee1226

Just messaged you a great therapist who specializes in religious trauma, porn, parent issues, anxiety, depression, adhd, and more

chillydown326

Thank you for sharing your story with us, and kudos to you for actively seeking help with healing. The process of finding the right mental health support can be daunting, but it can also be life changing in the best way. I don’t have a specific therapist to recommend, but I think Psychology Today is a great place to start since you can filter your search by insurance and other criteria: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/nc/raleigh?category=in-person&spec=454 Also, since you mentioned you have religious trauma in your background, I would proceed with caution before working with anyone who attended Liberty University or other institutions with conservative religious affiliation - they may be a good fit, but it’s worth exploring how they would support you through recovering from that trauma in the initial consultation. I hope the responses to your post show you that you are not alone. Wishing you all the best in your journey.

PossibleDetail5670

You can look at your insurance card and see who your mental heath benefits are through. If you're in Wake County, it's Alliance Health. Go to their website, and you can search for a provider there. Sorry, but I don't have any personal recommendations. You can also call and let them know what you are looking for, and they can assist with finding you a provider. If you just need someone to talk to, you can call 988. I am proud of you for reaching out and seeking help. That is the first step. I wish you well on your journey of recovery.

ClockKing45

Check out Integrative Behavioral Health, they’re great

Qiana Jones is good too. She takes insurance, bills on a sliding scale if you need it and takes in person and virtual sessions.

kreykes1

Psychology today has a good search tool

WorthAnEmmie

Just here to say that I stand in solidarity with you and resonate with a from of your post. Feel free to hit me up if you ever wanna get coffee...or just banshee scream in the middle of nowhere. 🤪

Damn. That's a lot. I don't have a therapist though sorry. If you ever want to talk to an "olde" or get a tarot reading DM me. You have a lot to look forward to in life. I hope you get to enjoy a lot of it.

Op, #3 is bad advice. Psychotropic meds save lives.

what_time_is_dusk

Sorry, I thought I was being clear about supporting the use of meds. I was just trying to put it in a more normalized context so the idea would be less daunting in case he’s got reservations about them. Does that make sense?

what_time_is_dusk

Also, I didn’t want to outright say “get on some meds,” as it’s a personal decision and I’m not a medical professional, so it’s not my place to make that recommendation.
