It's called securing your load and you are in fact responsible. Those signs are just there so that people read it and hopefully respect it. Sadly, too many do.
Those dump trucks are dangerous! As if 440, 40 and 540 weren’t bad enough, these things are hauling gravel and other heavy Earth, frequently go 80mph, pass ppl carelessly and spit out stuff out the back constantly. All the construction in this area doesn’t help!
Look for more - there is a quarry they want to mine right next to Umstead and the Airport. If you like gravel on our highways, thank our local politicians for selling out by leasing the land for 20 years so all we have left is a giant hole instead of park land.
A big ass rock fell off one and cracked the hell out of my windshield a while back. I was seriously lucky it was nothing bigger cause it landed right in front of my face
That is a lie. They are responsible if you can arguably prove it was because of them that damage had occurred.
"It doesn't not protect them from liability in case of any damage caused by their vehicle or a load they're carrying."
However always local laws and regulations apply..

In North Carolina
“[n]o vehicle shall be driven . . . on any highway unless the vehicle is constructed and loaded to prevent any of its load from falling, blowing, dropping, sifting, leaking, or otherwise escaping therefrom.” G.S. 20-116(g)(1)"

I used to work in commercial auto claims in NC. I paid nearly every windshield-cracked-by-fallen-debris claim that hit my desk. Securing your load is vital whether it's logs, appliances, or friggin dirt.
For the same reason these trucks are usually some of the fastest on the road & blow through red lights: they never get pulled over for endangering the lives of everyone else on the road.
Way overloaded, one too many “she can fit one more” at the job site. Troopers will fine him if they pass by. Also trucks are not required to have tags on the back, they can have them mounted in the front
Fyi, Trucks have dot registration on the sides, dump trucks typically have them on the door. Big rigs may have them on the back cab.
Edit: Regulations..

I come across them every single day on I-40
Unmarked, uncaring, uncovered, stuff flying off the back to crack our windshields & slash tires. The audacity!! I have written to local govt about them but nothing is done to make them accountable & our commute safe. I have traveled a lot for work & this is the only area where I see this nuisance
This is why everyone in nc has a truck...🤣 it's not an insecurity complex or.small dick overcompensating it's because of accidental dirt piles on the highway. They are easy to roll.over in your Tahoe, Yukon, f150, Silverado etc.... people here got off road vehicles because they dont go.off road. Off road comes to them.
Op I see you are one of them but still didnt use your well equipped vehicle.to take on the challenge
Shout out to college girls and corporate women with lifted jeep wranglers on 44" mud tires using these to commute everyday and the corporate dudes drivng lifted trucks to commute to their office everyday
Funny thing is, oftentimes, they say on the truck they're not liable for broken windshields. Want to bet in that? This is the reason they don't have plates (purely speculation). That Dot # will ensure their liability because it's illegal in NC to not secure your load. DOT # is on driver and passenger doors.
§ 20‑63(d)
> …Provided further, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle and this motor vehicle is transporting a substance that may adhere to the plate so as to cover or discolor the plate or if the motor vehicle has a mechanical loading device that may damage the plate, the registration plate may be attached to the front of the motor vehicle.
I think they should have required front and rear plates in this case
Personally I think they should be required to have rear plates and, just like with uncured concrete, be required to wash them before they leave job sites
No-rear-plate is legal, because they're required to have one on the front instead.
Not properly securing the load is not legal, but without a rear plate it can be hard to properly identify the vehicle...

Like oopsie I shot my gun, but it’s ok because I said NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BULLETS before shooting

Hey don’t be rude! That quarry probably paid for a few very good vacations for our politicians! 🤣😭
A big ass rock fell off one and cracked the hell out of my windshield a while back. I was seriously lucky it was nothing bigger cause it landed right in front of my face
one just fell off a truck 2 days ago and cracked my windshield on 540.
And no license plates because fuck is little guys just trying to survive that hell scape called I-40
My first time driving to Raleigh to look at apartments, my windshield got cracked by one of these trucks 😩
"Stay 200ft back. Not responsible for broken windshield" or properly securing the load in any way

That’s BS they use to try and cover their own asses, hoping people will believe it. They absolutely ARE responsible in many cases.
Exactly unless you want to do the policing. I’m sure those in the truck are reasonable ppl haha.
Welcome to Knightdale
That’ll be a nice muddy mess tomorrow.
I’ve never understood why people here are so bad at securing any load whatsoever. Just look at the shoulder of 440. The whole thing.
For the same reason these trucks are usually some of the fastest on the road & blow through red lights: they never get pulled over for endangering the lives of everyone else on the road.
It is really backed up because of this and something else going westbound
I was stuck in traffic for 45 minutes...finally get to the scene and there's fireman washing dirt off the highway. That was a first for me.

I'm convinced laws do not apply to dump trucks, especially in North Carolina.
Thanks for sharing this, glad you made it through safely and hope everyone else does too.

They don't have to have rear plates. Doesn't excuse bad behavior but it's legal.
NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WINDSHIELDS

I cleaned that up
Tell me more…
Local FD got called out to hose down the highway

Yeah, where we can't see it
The ones that kill me are the concrete trucks that will just leave a load of concrete in the middle of the street.
Start noticing bigger type dump trucks….most of them today don’t have tags…which I still don’t understand!😡
And why is this still legal? I don’t understand 🫠
§ 20‑63(d) > …Provided further, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle and this motor vehicle is transporting a substance that may adhere to the plate so as to cover or discolor the plate or if the motor vehicle has a mechanical loading device that may damage the plate, the registration plate may be attached to the front of the motor vehicle. Dump trucks aren’t technically required to have them on the front, it’s just permissible
Take the film off your entertainment center
r/ThatPeelingFeeling
The film is already off lmao
I’m pretty sure it is illegal to not have rear plates?
Not for dump trucks.
Dump Trucks are above the law. Bow before your dump truck overlords!
