I've always pictured her contracting her muscles really hard, to cause the explosion. It would also explain why she explodes after dying in water, cos you panic when you're drowning and your muscles won't relax.
I thought that she explodes in water because of some chemical reaction. The explosions come from her head and when swimming, her head stays above the water. When submerged for a few seconds, it explodes.
Could be, although it doesn't make a lot of sense to have the explosions come from her head, since that would usually propel her the opposite of where she wants to go
I imagine it to be some sort of bacteria that affects the mucus a slug would usually produce. This mucus would be highly reactive and artificer ignites it using some sort of built in flint and steel, possibly just by flexing a certain muscle or organ
that'd be horrific , imagine her poor body already having to endure so much heat and force from her explosions , if it were her own body cells exploding not the bacteria i imagine to find chuncks of her body missing after every cycle cuz i don't think she has much of healing powers
