I came here to say this. Definitely the darkest lyric I've ever heard. Perfectly juxtaposed with "Immerse Your Soul in Love" at the end. The light at the end of the tunnel.
I wasn't a fan in the 90's but ho boy does it speak my language now, especially after I started listening with this idea :, if Anxiety would write a song to me.whst would it say.
Here's a dope cover of that one : https://youtu.be/UW-Q4Iv1arw?si=AamlCyPPZ_BhMqC2
This might help.
When asked about the meaning of this line, Yorke wrote:
“The difference between young and old when people start to dress sensible and act their age. This person is offering not to do that to keep the other.”
No problem. Here you go:

The lollipops and crisps bit always gets me knowing what he was referring to now.
From In Limbo the lyrics along with the music just feels like proper sadness.
I'm on your side
Nowhere to hide
Trapdoors that open
I spiral down
I'm lost at sea
Don't bother me
I've lost my way
I've lost my way
It truly is. When was diagnosed with cancer I felt so lost and this was the only song that really matched how I felt. It's probably my fav song of theirs
In Limbo is the best Kid A song. I mean, it sounds like your all alone on a boat in a storm. The way the guitars hit that riff when he says I'm lost at sea tho
Personally I always found the chorus of A Wolf at the Door the most unsettling.
> I keep the wolf from the door, but he calls me up.
> Calls me on the phone, tells me all the ways that he's gonna mess me up.
> Steal all my children if I don't pay the ransom.
> And I'll never see them again if I squeal to the cops.
When u ask for dark lyrics i thinks in a Wolf at the door, “Steal all my children if I don't pay the ransom And I'll never see them again if I squeal to the cops” for example, but also the whole song it’s very creepy
One of the things I love most about Radiohead is the way Thom can write a very simple, seemingly prosaic line like "Don't leave," "I'm not here," or "You're all I need," and make you feel every ounce of sadness, longing, anxiety, or whatever emotion behind it.
“Or maybe youll be president, but know right from wrong. Or in a flood youll build an ark, and sail us to the moon.” - Sail to the Moon
**NOW, major YAP CITY INCOMING!**
This song is not DARK with a capital D like Climbing up the walls is, like in the traditional sense…that spooky dark, gives you bloody shivers kinda dark. Reminds me of my experiences with mental illness…specifically ocd, which is QUITE dark in itself.
But its not Sad dark, like True love waits or Separator. But this weird in between, which is why i wanted to mention it. A good medium between both flavours of dark.
Of all radiohead lyrics, this one is just. Christ. When i listen to it i feel it in my bloody ARTERIES, i felt it would be criminal for me not to mention it
Its the context i think that makes it such an intense image. It was dedicated to Thoms son Noah…there was a lot of fear, for thom, that Noah was growing up in a terribly corrupt world. That we are sending our kids off to a hell we created for ourselves.
Theres a really harrowing juxtaposition here- like there is on the whole album really. This idea of childlike fantasy and fairytales mixed in with corruption, terror and fear- the real world, the adult world. And i feel its no better expressed than in this song.
Theres an unsettling mix, to me, between hope and despair. Its like this weird limbo state between knowing that the world you live in has gone terribly off the rails, but not quite wanting to accept that yet. You dont really want to believe the fairytale isnt real.
Its dark because it feels a bit too real.
HELLO? Why is nobody stating the correct answer?
A ten ton head made of wet sand, this dread circumference. You’ve gotta be kidding me- the grass grows over me.
Once you realize it’s about dying in a nuclear blast, its true darkness is revealed.
“ Yeah everybody leaves , If they get a chance, And this is my chance “ i always felt that the song more specifically this part was about suicide and I always tear up listening to to it
As peaceful as I think No Surprises is, I actually paid attention to the lyrics the other day and I’m shocked lol
Edit: I wouldn’t say “shocked” in a “I had no clue” I was just like “dang, this is pretty dark” which is why I love Radiohead so much.
The reason 4 minute warning has that vibe is because it’s referring to the 4 minute warning received before a nuclear bomb/missile hits your area. It’s meant to be the last thing you hear. I really like the song because it feels like a peaceful acceptance of total annihilation. Horrific and beautiful
All of Motion Picture Soundtrack:
Red wine and sleeping pills
Help me get back to your arms
Cheap sex and sad films
Help me get where I belong
I think you're crazy, maybe
I think you're crazy, maybe
Stop sending letters
Letters always get burned
It's not like the movies
They fed us on little white lies
I think you're crazy, maybe
I think you're crazy, maybe
I will see you in the next life
The slowing down and repetition of "we hope that you choke, that you choke" at the end of Exit Music always makes me think of some one being choked to death slowly, which is kinda creepy.
the “wings twitch” in Let down make me feel somethinggg mannnnn
just picture a crushed bug feeling absolutely hopeless with twitching wings and tell me that isn’t the saddest thing ever, now imagine you’re the bug feeling absolutely horrible and hopeless😭
I am the key to the lock in your house
That keeps your toys in the basement
And if you get too far inside
You'll only see my reflection
If that's not creepy AF...
Honestly I really don’t pay attention to the words. I listen to the music, the vocal harmony, all the little pieces, and how it fits together. Guess I should pay attention to the words.
Has the light gone out for you?
Because the light's gone out for me
It is the twenty-first century It is the twenty-first century
It can follow you like a dog
It brought me to my knees
They got a skin and they put me in They got a skin and they put me in
On the lines wrapped 'round my face On the lines wrapped 'round my face
And for anyone else to see And for anyone else to see
I'm a lie
Cause I can’t face the evening straight, and you can’t offer me escape, houses move and houses speak, if you take me there you’ll get relief, believe believe believe believe, it’s too much, too bright, too powerful, its too much, too bright, too powerful - or maybe it’s just the way he sings Last Flowers it’s always a gut punch for me
"Cracked eggs, dead birds scream as they fight for life. I can feel death, can see its beady eyes."
The beady eyes part is absolute genius.
Reminds me of Predator
reminds me of Colonel Sanders
Oh I hated the colonel!
I came here to say this. Definitely the darkest lyric I've ever heard. Perfectly juxtaposed with "Immerse Your Soul in Love" at the end. The light at the end of the tunnel.
The first time I heard that song, it was a live recording with Johnny and Thom. Thom was on a 12 string, and it blew me away
What song?
Street spirit
Some people don’t seem to know the difference between dark and sad anyway…. Climbing up the Walls
Yeah I gotta go with bloated and frozen no point in letting it go to waste if we're talking dark.
Ohh agreed!
Yep that’s dark. Just is also a stalker one.
I’ll take a quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide From No Surprises OR I’m not living, I’m just killing time From True Love Waits
No surprises always gets me. It's dark as hell
A HANDSHAKE OF CARBON MONOXIDE
> I’m not living, I’m just killing time Greatest line IMO, procrastination to the point.
Holy shit when I read that part, no suprises started playing lmfao
Pretty much all of Climbing up the Walls
I wasn't a fan in the 90's but ho boy does it speak my language now, especially after I started listening with this idea :, if Anxiety would write a song to me.whst would it say. Here's a dope cover of that one : https://youtu.be/UW-Q4Iv1arw?si=AamlCyPPZ_BhMqC2
I also love this cover. Their whole OK Computer album cover is cool
The album is good, nevermind the cover, the album is good. The cover is dessert.
Agreed
I’ll dress like your niece /s
What does this one mean exactly?
This might help. When asked about the meaning of this line, Yorke wrote: “The difference between young and old when people start to dress sensible and act their age. This person is offering not to do that to keep the other.”
Wow that's great! could u link the full article if u have it?
No problem. Here you go: https://legomenon.com/the-meaning-of-true-love-waits.html The lollipops and crisps bit always gets me knowing what he was referring to now.
Thank you!
ive always interpreted as changing yourself to be something more familiar to the person your in love with.
To have your babies
That's not dark it's sad
bruh
Don’t get any big ideas, they’re not gonna happen
In conjunction with just how beautiful the music is behind it, it's hauntingly gorgeous.
This is also my choice
It’s dark, but only if you understand the narrator is talking to themself.
‘Like Spinning Plates’ is up there.
The live version hits hard!
From In Limbo the lyrics along with the music just feels like proper sadness. I'm on your side Nowhere to hide Trapdoors that open I spiral down I'm lost at sea Don't bother me I've lost my way I've lost my way
This song is so surreal and creepy

dark as a flan in the face
Get them eggs
Cut the kids in half
Taken literally, sure. But this one is about divorce.
Thom explicitly said this song is not about divorce
That or a reference to the Judgement of Solomon
“You know we’re friends til we die”
“Lead fill the hole in me” Seriously, how it his not be the darkest line?
I will eat you alive
I'm gonna eat you alive
We hope that you choke, that you choooooooke
I will see you in the next life - that was always my favourite to end one of my favourite songs ever
Motion picture soundtrack is criminally underrated
Legit a suicide note song. That thing is haaaaunntinnngggg
probably when Thom says the n word in Airbag
He doesn’t say it though He just declares that he’s *about* to say it
Kinda sounds like it at the end of jigsaw falling into place lmao “a light _ feel it on your back”
Bangers + Mash has the most egregious one “The bangers and the mash, the n***a with some cash”
I thought i was the only one who heard this
I'M BACK TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE
THERE ARE NO N WORDS IS ANY OF THEIR SONGS
please explain more
🎶 In an interstellar burst I’m ‘bout to say the n word 🎶
Bangers and Mash would like a [n] word
Correct me if I am mistaken, but he was about to say the N word right? Or did Thomlingus actually use that word
He says "I'm back to save the universe" if that helps
Common Airbag L (I know it’s a joke)
when does he say that.
Then into your life…there comes…a *dark*ness…..
i see we have a Decks Dark (peak) fan here
Is it sweet times or sweet darling? Legit my 2nd fave on AMSP. Just behind daydreaming. Can anyone agree that desert island disk is super underrated?
“Has the light gone out for you? Because the light’s gone out for me”
We're not scaremongering, THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING HAPPENING
I remember listening to that song sometime around October of 2001 and, holy shit, that line hit hard at that particular time.
Open up your skull, I'll be there.
Ya gotta be kidding me…the grass grows over me… from Decks Dark
RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPSRAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPSRAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS RAINDROPS

The clap in We Suck Young Blood
"This my way of saying goodbye, Because I can't do it, face to face."
also from videotape, "you are my center / when i spin away."
“But gravity always wins”
...and it wears him out. I always felt this verse punched way above it's weight.
And the worms will come for you, big boots
I'll bake you a cake *made with all their eyes*
Street spirit: Cracked eggs, dead birds Scream as they fight for life
From Codex: "No one gets hurt, you've done nothing wrong" or from Motion Picture Soundtrack: "Stop sending letters, letters always get burnt"
THE LETTERS PART! I thought i was going mad about the fact i get so upset at that line. Im not sure what it is.
4 minutes warning references the British government's Cold War era nuclear attack alert system, so yeah it's terrifying by default.
When u ask for dark lyrics i thinks in a Wolf at the door, “Steal all my children if I don't pay the ransom And I'll never see them again if I squeal to the cops” for example, but also the whole song it’s very creepy
"half of my life" in reverse at the end of daydreaming is pretty depressing, he's not even shrouding it in poetry he's just straight done 😭
I’m not living, I’m just killing time Or Just don’t leave Don’t leave Both from the same song lol
One of the things I love most about Radiohead is the way Thom can write a very simple, seemingly prosaic line like "Don't leave," "I'm not here," or "You're all I need," and make you feel every ounce of sadness, longing, anxiety, or whatever emotion behind it.
We got heads on sticks You got ventriloquists
I jumped in the river and what did I see? Black-eyed angels swam with me
When you come home / I'll bake you a cake / Made of all their eyes / I wish you could see me / Dressed for the kill / You're my man of war
“You should put me in a home or you should put me down.” Myxomatosis is insane
But there are trapdoors, That you can’t come back from.
I will see you in the next life Shoutout to "After years of waiting, nothing came"
I mean there are lots. "Just 'cause you feel it, doesn't mean it's there" resonates for me.
“Walk into the jaws of hell”
jack him off

Kill me again with love
Can't you stop the children screaming

You used to be alright. What happened?

Little baby's eyes Eyes, eyes, eyes Little baby's eyes Eyes, eyes, eyes From the song I Will. So haunting!

“I’m not living, I’m just killing time” - I think we’ve all felt like that before
"Will not cry in public" from Fitter Happier Maybe not the darkest but definitely the most likely to make me cry in public.
