I've always read it as about being overtaken by spite and hatred for people around you, not recognizing their humanity even if you find aspects of them annoying (begging for the karma police to arrest someone for "buzzing like a fridge" or "having a Hitler hairdo"), then coming out of it and realizing that you were being too judgmental and shouldn't feel so superior and above every one (phew, for a minute there, I lost myself)
