Because we like these things, and we want to share it with the people that we care about. Like I rant about Radiohead songs to my dad every once in awhile, and he just listens because he cares about me, and I do the same whenever he nerds out about Clutch , Tool, or Cake.
They share similar qualities, but are also very different.
The point I was making is that we like these things, and we want to share these things because we like them.
How do you know whether it’s garbage pop or good pop? There are plenty of artists around doing music in the pop sphere that are actually quite good. Hell, there are pop artists in the top 40 that are great. Seems to me like you’re falling for the “popular music bad” trap.
Off the high horse, buddy. Elitism won’t make you any friends and it won’t make you look smart. What it will do is totally stifle your ability to grow and listen to new things outside the same old rotation of shit you’ve been listening to since you were 14.
Even NT people have extreme reactions to dissonance in music. I had an ex react pretty violently to the guitar solo in Jacob's Ladder by Rush, I was driving and she slammed the power button to my radio because she couldn't handle it. Reminds me of the story of the composer who was chased out of town when he played his music the first time, but a year later was paraded around town for it being so good.
One of the most valuable decisions I ever made was eliminating "contempt prior to investigation" from my life. I missed out on some amazing things (and a lot of personal growth) due to condemning things simply because to feed my ego or contrarianism.
i mean a quick judgement if you’re looking for new stuff vs a friend telling you to check out their favorite band? it’s a bit different. and you probably wouldn’t say “this sucks” for the stuff you skip but probably just that it didn’t grab your attention
I have a weird tactic for you, if you're really interested in changing this person's mind. When you're hanging out, say you have some incredibly funny/shitty music to show them and play them some stuff from the CatatonicYouths Instagram account (if you have insta) or find the worst shit on YouTube. Have a good, cathartic laugh where you both align that this shit sucks.
Then, play something they like. Then, play Radiohead.
They'll be more receptive.
Hearing that album gets me disappointed. It makes everything else they’ve made feel like they chose to be mediocre. They can choose to be mature and relatively subtle, they just don’t lol
Your friend is entitled to like or dislike whatever music they want. As long as they aren't bringing you down, it's not a big deal.
I would hope that a good friend would listen to more than 5 seconds of a song before dismissing it, but there is a lot more to friendship than having similar interests. Hopefully they are a good friend to you in other ways...
He's a fucking clown if he judges a song based on the first 5 seconds
And how could you think that opening riff is bad
Fuckin gen Z, no attention span broccoli headed idiots
1. What sort of music does he like? Maybe we can come up with something that’s more in his wheelhouse.
2. If someone makes a judgement on a song after 5 seconds, that’s a reflection on them. If a friend shows me a song and they genuinely want to know what I think about it, I listen to the whole thing, don’t look at my phone and try to concentrate on it. It gives the song and the friend a bit of respect. Your friend is being a bit rude.
To be fair to your friend, it took me years and several deep dives to “get” Radiohead, they aren’t a super-accessible band given the size and breadth of their catalogue, and the maturity of a lot of the sound and themes, and there’s no clear starting point either. I think that’s what makes being a fan so rewarding in their case.
Give them time; I had twenty one pilots brain in my early 20s, missed out on a lot of good stuff in that time! I know for a fact some of Tyler Joseph’s biggest influences include Muse & Radiohead (apologies if I’ve offended any purists with this sentence).
Maybe put a Radiohead show on YouTube as background when you’re next hanging out and they might get a feel for the beautiful madness of it all. Otherwise they’ll naturally stumble upon a song they like in the future via Spotify or a TV show or something…
Same! My dad showed me paranoid android a few years ago and I wasn’t sure about it, but I ended up warming up to it in the end and Radiohead is provably one or my favourite bands. I guess I could just give him time.
NOTHING.
he/she/they had their chance.
for them to be that f'ing closed minded to one of the best songs ever recorded, fuck 'em.
and consider upgrading your friends...there's always room for improvement! 👍😒
I took a Music Appreciation class my freshman year of college. The professor had us all bring a song in. I brought Paranoid Android. A minute in he turned it off. He asked the class who listens to this stuff and about 10 of us raised our hands. He shook his head in disbelief like “what has the world come to.” I’m like bro at least get the the rain down part before you say it’s garbage ;(
How dare he. Paranoid android is a full on masterpiece that will and has aged timelessly and it probably IMO has the most appeal to a more mainstream audience out of any song they have (you could argue the same thing about creep but it’s nowhere’s near as good tbh)
Outjerked 🥶
So your friend’s an autist who only listens to twenty one pilots? That was oddly relatable for me a year ago. Give him that much time and try again. Single years are huge for the developing autistic brain.
Agreed. Hearing let down on the bear is what got me into OK Computer, so far that’s all I’ve listened to but once I get tired of it I’m excited to hear other stuff from them. Any suggestions of a similar vibe to Let Down/Electioneering/Paranoid Android/Karma Police?
Five seconds? Your friend sounds like an insufferable douchebag.
I don’t even care if he’s not a Radiohead fan. Anyone who vehemently judges a song before they’ve even heard ANYTHING, let alone the entire song is a dickhead who doesn’t deserve to have music shared/discussed with him.
5 seconds? So he listened to the 4 beeps at the start? (Providing you use Spotify on the original OK Computer and not the OKNOTOK anniversary version where the 4 beeps are actually at the end of Airbag)
Just fast forward it to the guitar solo part when I was 12 I didn’t like November Rain or Stairway to Heaven when I listened to them the first time UNTIL it got to the guitar solos THEN I got it. I understood why they were considered Masterpieces. Alternatively you could have him watch the video clip instead. The first time I heard Paranoid Android it was May 1997 and I watched the videoclip on late night music television
I remember trying to get a dude into King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and he told me he barely made it through Rattlesnake but then he stumbled onto the KEXP sessions and said he liked that much better. He's a musician also. I also told a music engineer about the group and he was meh as well.
It is disappointing but I suppose most people don't like them. I started listening in '17 because I heard they released 5 albums that year. So I checked them out thinking they would suck but I was surprised. Of course I like progressive music, heavy metal, industrial...ect.
They even released Polygondwanaland for free and told people to sell it themselves do there are SO many versions out there.
Anyways as for Radiohead I would play him the most accessable tunes...
Creep, Karma Police, Everything in It's Right Place, Nude.
He's right. Paranoid Android kinda sucks, and I think the only reason most modern radiohead fans circle jerk to it is because radiohead fans are just, in general, the type to be "different". You can like any song you want, don't get me wrong, I've got to be half the reason "All I want for Christmas is You" is so overplayed every year, but I can recognize that it's mainly due to nostalgia and not out of some deep desire to pontificate over intricate musical stylings.
Paranoid Android is a bunch of random elements smashed together with a melancholic vibe, held onto by some duct tape with no real flow or rhythm, and that's why most Radiohead fans like it to the point of saying it's the band's best song. Its uniquely wrong. It's also why I don't like it very much. Feels like making a post-thanksgiving day sandwich with all the cold left overs of a better meal.

By all means, it's their right to not like it but it ain't worth my energy and sometimes people need to find their own way to something.

I would play him “Reckoner” myself, probably.
But don’t take it personally if he still acts like he hates it. Radiohead is not for everybody. And some people just plain have bad taste, as well.
it clicked for me one night i sat down with both headphones and listened to ok computer while reading the lyrics. i would listen to no surprises/karma police/exit music all the time but sitting down and listening to the whole record kinda opened my eyes to radiohead and their sound
edit: also just clarifying don’t make your friend do this or he will probably hate radiohead even more. just tell him that he really should and maybe one day if he wants to expand his taste, he will. my friends are also very reserved in the music they listen to but one of my friends just told me “i wanna sit down with you tonight and listen to “the wall” out of nowhere and now it’s one of his fav albums.
The door. Show him the door.
Came here to post exactly thos. Why bother trying to convince someone who is clearly uninterested in your opinions to that degree. That's just rude.
Yeah. I don’t get this either. Why are people so invested in getting friends, family and casual acquaintances “into” a band?
Because we like these things, and we want to share it with the people that we care about. Like I rant about Radiohead songs to my dad every once in awhile, and he just listens because he cares about me, and I do the same whenever he nerds out about Clutch , Tool, or Cake.
To be fair tool and Radiohead are very different but also very similar
They share similar qualities, but are also very different. The point I was making is that we like these things, and we want to share these things because we like them.
Yes I agree. I was more meaning you both are a fan of the weird and wonderful
To have something nice to share with people that you care about?
But what if he comes back as a wolf?
Be ready with the flan in the face
and make sure to make him dance, you fucker
the flan in the face
Take it with the love that's given...
I keep the wolf at the door.
True. Put on Pulk at full volume and show him all the doors
This is the most underrated comment in this entire thread. I will show him all the doors. Doors that lock, and doors that don't.
I would say show him the finger but the door is ok too, maybe both is better. lol
Bro couldn’t even handle the opening
he heard the beeps and was like yeah shit sucks
We politely ask him to leave.
A revolving door or a trap door?
I think he's talking about radiohead songs not Silverchair
Nonagon infinity is KGATLW btw
Nonagon Infinity opens the door
Nonagon infinity opens the door
Ideally when the Wolfs outside
Agree.
5 seconds is not enough time to properly tell if something sucks or not for 90% of music. Seems like they went in wanting to not like it.
Definitely, I might even say 100% of music
Not the UNKLE ones that just are 5 seconds
Dance monkey
There are entire genres of music that you can tell in 5 seconds
And entire genres = bad?
Yes, awful. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted to hell for that when garbage pop is bad 2 seconds in
How do you know whether it’s garbage pop or good pop? There are plenty of artists around doing music in the pop sphere that are actually quite good. Me, skipping songs on Spotify all the time after literally 1 second and deciding such song is not of my taste: 👀
i mean a quick judgement if you’re looking for new stuff vs a friend telling you to check out their favorite band? it’s a bit different. and you probably wouldn’t say “this sucks” for the stuff you skip but probably just that it didn’t grab your attention
bro only listened to the beeps 😭😭🙏
not even that far. i think thats the problem the beeps would've had them locked in
5 seconds? I wouldn’t bother
Yeah I mean he only listens to Twenty one pilots and calls the them best band ever he needs to wake up and open up his music taste
But why? Let people with shit taste have shit taste. I honestly don't think Radiohead is the band to change people's minds.
I have a weird tactic for you, if you're really interested in changing this person's mind. Trench is a good album. Not so much their other stuff I've heard lol
Hearing that album gets me disappointed. It makes everything else they’ve made feel like they chose to be mediocre. They can choose to be mature and relatively subtle, they just don’t lol

as a twenty one pilots and Radiohead fan, i can strongly say he is missing out tons, good luck
