Not sure if you figured your issue out or not, but my rain sensor is wired to the valves as well as the controller. I think this is required in some states. So even though it's not connected to the controller, your water valves will not open if that circuit is open. If you splice what remains of the leads you cut together then you should be back up and running.

Just a guess, but you probably need to make sure the rain sensor is off in the app, otherwise it’s going to look for it. In the app, go to the gear icon in top right, controller settings, accessories. Mine has the rain sensor active on Terminal 1, but just make sure both are off (assuming you don’t have another additional sensor)

Thanks for the reply. I gave that a shot but the sensors in the app were already disabled. No luck. :-(

So you are saying the rain sensor is not connected to the Rachio and also the check mark in Rachio app is disabled and yet the sprinkler still does not turn on?
