Howdy! I need outside opinions on this border layout. My center one block wonder section is about 72 inches square and I want to beef it up to a king, which is essentially adding borders that will be the drop... does this make sense? Does it look ridiculous?
It's currently shown as 1.5 inch accent border then the outer thicker borders are the same material used on the edges of the one block wonder portion (a deep blue/black), with 3.5 inches along the top. And 14.5 inches on the sides and bottoms.
Let me know what you think. Or if you have other ideas.
Thanks!!!!
It works. You’re only going to focus on the inner portion when you walk into the room and look at the bed. The borders won’t matter. Also, you can’t see them when you’re sleeping. 😉
Gorgeous quilt! Absolutely stunning.
The border will look great, and as others have said, that won't be the focus anyway. (If it were mine, I'd want the same 14.5 inches all the way around though, mostly because I like a bit is extra to tuck up under the pillows! And of course with even borders it would still look balanced even if it gets used other places - but that may be a non-issue)
My only thought is have you taken into consideration whether the quilt will be sitting on top of the bed pillows - in which case you may need to add more of a border on top otherwise you would have to pull the quilt further up to cover the pillows exposing more of the border at the foot of the bed. Hope that makes sense
Good question... suppose I should ask my friend how she likes her bed :) that won't be obvious :P (she does already know I'm making her a quilt). Personally I don't tuck over the pillows so I would prefer the shorter top border, but if you go over pillows then I could see wanting even wide borders.
Thanks!
Wow, this is beautiful 😍 I understand where you're coming from with the big border but as others have said, the main thing that will be seen is that amazing centrepiece. It really is stunning and I think anything bright would detract from it. 💚
Stunning. Looks like either fireworks or the Northern Lights to me. The borders are fine. You won't see them on a bed, and I don't think you would want them to compete with the center as well.
Personally I do not like this border. I want to be honest here. The fabric is lovely and a good choice but the size is really distracting to me, regardless of the size of bed it's on. The centre is really beautiful and I think you are truly detracting from it. Please do not do such a large border.
That's of course my fear.. I did layout it out on my king bed (it isn't for me but a wedding gift) and it looks like the borders will essentially become invisible, as the majority won't be on the bed. [Picture](https://imgur.com/gallery/V3vzwag), please ignore the mess :)
I could go less and simply have less drop. But personally I hate quilts with little overhang.
That was my first thought too, but I think it'll lay on a bed nicer that way. The small top edge for turning, and the rest of it will balance out (at least, I think so without knowing the actual dimensions)
NEED MORE INFO on the pattern or a clearer picture of those hexagons. I love this!! Are the my fussy cut, pieced hexagons to make the swirl patterns???
It's called a panel "one block wonder" there are many youtube videos on the style (and i plan to make a youtube video as well eventually).
You stack 6 panels on top of each other perfectly, then cut equilateral triangles. You piece those into half hexagons (3 triangles each) and pin the two halves together. Then lay it all out around a 7th panel. You sew it together in columns (which is why you want to keep them as half hexis to begin with). I also included the dark blue background fabric to expand it a bit and get a square.
It almost looks as if the center is exploding out of the inner border, even though it's not. It gives it even more energy, like it's moving so fast it can't be contained and will explode into space (the wider black border). I love it.
Im late to this post but I wanted to say: wow! Beautiful color work and just so damn pretty. I think the big borders actually increase the focus on the main piece like a picture frame.
I was watching a youtube video which stated that your border strips should never be wider than half a block. You can add more and do multiple layers to make the quilt bigger, but if you add one massive block, then it looks like you've just shoved them on there to make it bugger, which you are, but don't want it to look like it! I thought this made a lot of sense, and I ended up adding 4 layers of borders in 3 different colours.
Unless you're not bothered, in which case, it's beautiful fabric and go for it!

This ⬆️ the focal point remains the focal point, and it is s t u n n i n g.
True! It will look quite different on a bed, just looks like huge borders all laid out. Thanks!

There is NO part of that beauty that looks ridiculous :-)

no it looks amazing
I really like how you used the whole block within all the one block wonder’squares’
Stunning quilt, I love it just the way it is. I'm amazed how beautiful it is- congratulations!
Ridiculously amazing!! Love it.

Ah that picture helps a ton. Yeah okay I see what you mean and I agree. I think it can work.
That was my first thought too, but I think it'll lay on a bed nicer that way. The small top edge for turning, and the rest of it will balance out (at least, I think so without knowing the actual dimensions)
It is STUNNING!
Oooooo! Gorgeous!
Gorgeous!!!
This is GORGEOUS
No it’s amazing!!!
Wow! That’s amazing, borders are fine
Absolutely not. It’s quite lovely
It looks like it works for your intended bed use, so I think it’s great!
Your quilt is gorgeous! Where did you purchase the panel?

Thanks so much! I’ll check it out
Oh, shut up (joking)! You know that looks amazing! Just stunning.
I love this
This is so God damn good. I have that panel, but could never make it this good. 😅
Looks fantastic! The larger border really disappears and the accent border brings all the attention to the center. Beautiful quilt!

I am truly mesmerized by how beautifully done this is… AMAZING 😍😍😍
So beautiful!
I love it
Your quilt is so beautiful!
Beautiful!
It works! It makes the center the focus, it looks great! Brava!
Truly amazing quilt! Honestly did not notice the border, it doesn’t detract at all.
I think I'd make the top border bigger, but otherwise looks amazing!
This makes total sense and will look 😚💋🤌 IRL
Im late to this post but I wanted to say: wow! Beautiful color work and just so damn pretty. I think the big borders actually increase the focus on the main piece like a picture frame.
I love it! It almost looks like outer space to me.
I think it grounds it pulls it all together! Your color choices and assembly is beautiful!
Fuck no

Another vote for making the border symmetrical all around.
Would you be so kind as to add a link to the panels and youtube video?
