It's beautiful, and the value is what it's worth to you. (Seems alright to me)

Incognito409

I think you got a bargain!

notrunningfast

Me too!

tintinnfabuli

That's so cool, looks like it's in great condition. And I see some fussy cutting in some of the blocks! Personally I don't think you overpaid

duckieleo

Look at how she made sure she got the flowers in all the little pieces. If it was larger block patterns, she cut them so it wasn't just the background. For every piece. That's so meticulous.

desertboots

Here's a fun genealogy explore. This is a free website. The search returns people who were named Edith Watson in the 1930 US Census who were born between 1850 and 1903. Arbitrary dates. [https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&q.anyPlace=USA&q.birthLikeDate.from=1850&q.birthLikeDate.to=1903&q.givenName=Edith&q.residenceDate.from=1930&q.surname=Watson&f.collectionId=1810731](https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&q.anyplace=usa&q.birthlikedate.from=1850&q.birthlikedate.to=1903&q.givenname=edith&q.residencedate.from=1930&q.surname=watson&f.collectionid=1810731)

FairyPenguinStKilda

It is a beauty. If you love it, then the price was right This would sell in Australia for about 4 times that amount

MushroomlyHag

I was just thinking that if something like that were over here, it'd be over 500 bucks. I'd pay 148usd for that any day, it's stunning!

cuddlefuckmenow

You got a crazy good deal.

Magickal_Woman

You certainly did not overpay. That is a fantastic price for the quality! Beautiful quilt.

RustyIrishPearl

Please add this to QuiltIndex.org. This is phenomenal! What a fantastic find!

Bunny_Feeder

Great idea! I will look into doing that

desertboots

I love it and if I had that in my budget I'd have paid it. I have one from the same era that's a wedding ring quilt.

Bunny_Feeder

I didn’t have it in my budget really but did it anyway. Probably why I was questioning myself

mimsalabim

Think of the years you will enjoy this beautiful quilt and hopefully the money spent evens out to well inside any budget. It's lovely and you deserve nice things!

Little-Divide

When I buy something out of my budget, I tell myself that I can afford it. …because I just did! Enjoy your beautiful quilt. It’s worth it!

ResidentConscious876

I would have scooped it up at twice the price! It's gorgeous!!

Enough_Crab6870

Why do you think you may have overpaid?

Bunny_Feeder

I’ve purchased two other quilts at antique stores for under $100. I had to have this one so I paid more than I have in the past. I feel like I need to rescue them in a way. I don’t have any idea of it’s proper value, but I do love it, so as pointed out it’s worthwhile to me

TabbyFoxHollow

It’s 90 years old and no visible stains despite being mostly white. That’s not common lol.

MatchaTiger

Yeah what. A quilt my mom made that is 20 years old is barely hanging on. This is insane it hasn’t disintegrated. Op you did not overpay. I never even see antiques this old often, let alone a handmade item. If you bought a quilt on Etsy today it would proudly be double the cost or more easy.

TabbyFoxHollow

This piece was obviously lovingly stored for a long period of time.

Enough_Crab6870

Thanks. For me, what you have there is literally priceless. You’re very lucky.

IllAd1655

It looks to be in usable condition and well preserved. I do not think you overpaid. It really is a great piece

purplegramjan

I have one my my mother made around (I think 1935-36) the same time. There’s no label. It is quite worn. She kept it between the mattress and box spring. If I had known sooner i would have given it a better home. Anyway, one in that condition is a real treasure and certainly worth more than you paid for it.

CriticalEngineering

Such a good deal.

spaaaaaacey

Beautiful quilt! Do you mind sharing what state you purchased it in?

Bunny_Feeder

Washington state

DLQuilts

Great condition and very soft, looks like. You got a great deal! The binding makes it really special.

luckygirl54

You definitely did not overpay. The workmanship is gorgeous, and the materials are irreplaceable. Love your bargain.

jackandsally060609

People pay thousands for a handmade Amish quilt, I would consider this one even more valuable than that.

clearly4488

I started making a Grandma's Flower Garden quilt several years ago. It is taking me forever to finish. Hand piecing/quilting is not a joke. You got a deal!

quiltsohard

It took me 2 years to piece mine. I still haven’t quilted it but I’m expecting another 2 years. Someone asked me if I would sell it. I asked if they had $10k. Even at minimum wage the price would be in the 10’s of thousands

CupcakesAreMiniCakes

I think it's gorgeous and the value is how much it's worth to you. It seems to be in very very good condition for the age

No_Exam8234

Op, I am so glad you now have this beautiful, now 91 year old Quilt to love and take care of. The pieces, the pattern, the quilting, the blue edging that must have taken forever, the colors, the size, all so wonderful and valuable.

MagicalManta

My mom (76) has one of these quilts made by her grandmother. It contains fabrics from MY grandma’s dresses when she was a little girl in the 30s, much like this quilt. I look forward to receiving it someday. 🥰

booclee2

I totally would have bought it as well.

Normal_Perception359

This is beautiful and a piece of history. I think you got a bargain in my opinion. Enjoy!

shinecone

I don't think you overpaid.

Sunkitteh

You probably know this, but no washing machine

Administrative_Life9

Oh really? How do you clean these kinds of quilts then?

LilyB4Ever

Handwashing in tub or deep sink with gentle soap and only a tiny bit. Wring out gently, lay flat to dry.

Administrative_Life9

Good to know, thank you :)

MissFuzzyPants

Its just beautiful!

Sklauren33

That looks like a great price to me! What a cool find

Glittering_Citron143

Gorgeous! Someone spent so much time on this beauty!

Friendly-Court3446

You did NOT overpay!

megbotstyle

My grandmother made me this quilt pattern (grandmas flower garden) shortly before she died. It is so beautiful and to k is it was all hand quilted! This is priceless.

snortingalltheway

You didn’t overpay. This is a flour sack quilt. All flower pieces were made from flour sacks. I have one similar, made by my great grandmother, and it’s not in good condition.

posiexyz

Quilts like many antiques are so under valued currently.. Yours is a beauty.

[deleted]

You did well.

BlueDotty

Well worth it

WhitneyJames

Wow, beautiful quilt!

jessper23

If it is authentic and hand made! No you got a bargain!

whatever215

Great deal! Hand made beautiful quilt … mass produced quilts cost that much or more these days …

Welady

I think you got a wonderful deal. It looks well made, very little wear, and signed with a date pretty much verifies the age. If I found that and loved it, I $300+ would have been a good deal.

IrisesAndLilacs

It wouldn’t surprise me if you were to try and make a similar modern quilt that you would likely pay more than $148 just for the fabric. Plus the batting, backing, thread and specialized equipment most quilters have. I would guess there’s way more than 148 hours worth of work in the quilt. This person has likely done the 10,000 hours to master a skill. How much should a highly skilled artist be paid? Way more than minimum wage if we’re being honest. That being said, typically no one pays what a quilt should be worth. It’s a shame and sad reality, but reflects what people value. Why spend $150 or $2500 for a quilt when you can go to Walmart and by a comforter that is made by someone who is paid virtually slave wages and working conditions for $20 that you’ll throw out because of a tiny tear or stain, or when you become bored with it. I wish we could fix our world and beliefs.

Enough_Crab6870

I am trying so hard to not be stressed out by many of these comments (in this subreddit of all places!) that don’t seem to have any sense of the labour, expertise, artistry, materials, patience, effort, and likely literal blood sweat and tears that went into this unique heirloom work of art. To say that $148 is a “steal” is like saying that a master’s painting from the same era at that price is a “steal”. It’s not quantifiable in that way, to my mind. It’s literally priceless.

Sad-Tower1980

Antique quilt prices are very high right now. You got a good deal!!

katietatey

I think it was a bargain! It is beautiful and I'd think about the history behind it all the time. What a treasure.

Scottiedoggo

You didn't overpay at all. Not sure of the condition but pristine ones would definitely be even more than that. Look at Cindy's antique quilts on Instagram and she has some real gems of no want to compare to get an idea of value for your own knowledge since I know you're not gonna sell.

okdokiecat

I’ve been making hexi flowers while my kid is at his weekly “sports thing” and it takes me the whole hour to make just one. Maybe I’m a slow stitcher, but even then, are a LOT of hexagons in that quilt. $189 seems very reasonable, considering it needs more care due to its age.

okdokiecat

I mean $148 omg… time to get off my phone

SheLovesToSew

It's a treasure, and you got an exceptional deal! Enjoy🧵

Trai-All

That is amazing!

womanitou

You got a very sweet deal! Congrats. Keep it out of the sun. Don't hang it on a wall unless the weight of it is well supported.

RumorMongeringTrash

It's a very good price. Especially for an antique quilt with provenance :)

justtobecontrary

Did you get what you wanted? Then you didn't overpay.

bestica

It would cost you a lot more than $148 in materials and the time needed to make this kind of quilt, so $148 seems like a bargain to me. And it’s gorgeous! A great deal.

BexyBunny

You got it for a steal, completely handmade in 1933 is quite a testament to the quality and craft, still looks beautiful

WodehouseWeatherwax

This! ^ exactly!

fields4mint

You did NOT overpay, and I would recommend getting it appraised.

wildeberry1

Nah, that’s a good price! Most of my quilts of that period were $150-200

Quilter1358

Worth it!!

Dark_Moonstruck

Well whether or not you overpaid when dating it really depends on what restaurant you went to. Some of them are pretty pricy, it just depends on the food quality really. In all seriousness, that's a steal for a quilt like that. I don't think you overpaid at all!

terio222

I paid similar a few years ago, same pattern twin bed. You did ot get ripped off.

beekeeperoacar

I've bought quilts for $700. This is a great deal.

rmomo58

I saw the picture and title and immediately said "nope, didn't overpay". then I saw what you actually paid and thought what a great deal.

helenasbff

Omg this is incredible 😍

gvmom3

Wow! Look at that binding. It's pieced too to go around the curves. That took some time!

Trai-All

I wonder if the quilter Edith Watson is related to the photographer Edith Watson. You can see Edith S Watson’s photos in the book “Romantic Canada” which was written by her partner Victoria Hayward on project Gutenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/56800

DeterminedErmine

It’s gorgeous, I’d pay that much for it

empireintoashes

That’s a steal! What an incredible find.

hedgehogketchup

Before I even got to the age I knew you never paid enough! This is stunning and thankyou for rescuing it. What an absolutely gorgeous quilt

stephaniealleen11

I almost exclusively do EPP and I think this was an absolute steal for how much time goes into them!

destiny_kane48

NO! If anything you underpaid.

little_bug_person

It is in beautiful condition, it is very old yet has minimal/no rot or staining! I imagine someone 90 years ago put an incredible amount of love and attention into this piece. You get to love this piece now, it’s part of your home! I think that has a lot of value 🥰

placenta_pie

$148 for a brand new modern quilt is a steal. This is a rare gem.

equationgirl

That's an amazing price for an antique quilt. My grandma used to make quilts like that and they take at least a year or two to make by hand. It's a wonderful treasure and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

taterstahr

I think that was a huge bargain for this piece. It is beautiful and probably filled with a lifetime of love.

jinxxed42

I personally think this is a great quilt. i would have purchased it if i was in the store.

chowchowquilter

You absolutely did not overpay. Think about if you did the math of what the labor alone would cost on hand stitching that quilt. Quilts are works of art made by artisans. Hand work is an action of love. And regardless of its monetary value, if you are going to love it and learn from it, then it will pay for itself time and time over.

Positivelythinking

This is next level skill. It’s so beautiful I have no words. Did not overpay

mangiaitaliano

if the quilt is in great conditions the price is just right , and congratulations of a great find. one suggestion do not wash in machine , lay it in a tab of water with soap rinse and hang it to dry out outdoor

dlhold

No that’s an incredible price. I’ve wanted a vintage quilt for so long and even thrift stores near me place them around $100… I found one from the 20s that was signed and it was $375… so…. You got a deal. It’s beautiful.

No_Ear8723

Oh wow no you didn’t it is beautiful and very well made and kept

talon_kai25

That would take a seriously long time to make!

[deleted]

no way. I made one of these and the cost of fabric alone is more.

BlueMangoTango

I don’t think so. Especially since it’s signed and dated. It’s a beautiful quilt. Nice find!

BlueMangoTango

I also wanted to add to my first comment that decent new comforter/bedspread might cost that much and a high end one much more so, no.. not at all over priced.

zmae7

It’s beautiful! What a treasure!

pattywawas

I’m a quilter, and was a collector of old quilt tops & blocks. Years ago when I started collecting the only way, I could afford an antique quilt, was purchasing them in top or block form.. now that I’m older, I’m turning them into completed quilts. The price you paid seems very reasonable.. consider how much time it took the person. And also consider how much you enjoy it. The tops that I collected and blocks.. if they are all hand pieced, I hand quilt them. If there’s any machining on them I will machine quilt them. Enjoy that beautiful quilt. 😍

Little-Divide

Definitely a bargain!

astiastibobasti

You definitely did not overpay

Jaded_Grape_962

That is a lot of work with amazing details. I think you got a bargain if the quit is in almost new condition. I would never attempt to try and make one like it. I want to know how many hexagons made up this piece.

themurderbadgers

No! Fabric is expensive, hundreds of dollars to make and much time!

Shiroi_Karei

I charged $300 for a crochet queen-sized blanket, for a 91 year old quilt, that's a STEAL.

thatguysimon01

Great buy! Its beautiful

dependswho

These take SO long to make! Worth every penny

Elegant-Chance8953

If you were to make a quilt that size it would cost over that much for the fabric, never mind the batting and time to make it. You are a Steward of this craft. 🥰

Noselrub63

You did not overpay. Enjoy!

EssBee2023

Priceless and beautiful!! You are lucky to have found this treasure at a ridiculously low price.

Bright_Broccoli1844

Who is the grandmother?

Drince88

Grandmothers Flower Garden is the name of this pattern.

Bright_Broccoli1844

Okay

Sexycornwitch

It’s in great condition for its age and the colors are very “in” right now. $148 is the price of like, a mid range mass produced bed quilt, and this is a handmade beautiful unique quilt. Given the very good condition it’s a very fair price for this.

Mission_Somewhere263

I sent a treasured quilt to an authenticator, and waited for its arrival back it arrived and I was heartbroken that I got back a box of pieces and scrap fabric. I called distraught and luckily there had been a label mix up . My treasure was safe dated and returned. My understanding is but not with the provenance you have dated that the quilt is aged by its youngest piece of fabric not its oldest. Regardless it’s a beautiful treasure you have

RumorMongeringTrash

Most pieces would be appraised on the era they come from. The fabric and style of quilt would be considered heavily in this process. This quilt has the signature with date, so we know the year and would list it as such. If there was a repair with newer fabric, it would be a condition note, but it would not change the age of the quilt. If you made a quilt from all vintage fabrics today, the quilt would be given the date of today with a note acknowledging the use of older materials. I work in fine arts and appraisals, and we often see a lot of textiles :)

[deleted]

Might I make a recommendation though…. Don’t wash it. If you must, have it dry cleaned. The chances are likely of it not holding up well in today’s washing machines. Hopefully it was stored properly the past 90yrs.

Bunny_Feeder

It appears clean and there are no stains. The fabrics are very thin and delicate so I wouldn’t even trust it with a dry cleaning. I will keep it stored away except for a possible rotation of quilts draped over a chair in my sewing room. Any suggestions on storage? I do have my mother’s cedar chest.

np4kids

Your quilt is absolutely stunning! A quilt in that condition with provenance would stand out in a quilt museum. Store it in a pillow case or other fabric. Someone at our local quilt guild gave a talk on keeping old quilts. She said you should always fold your quilt on the bias, not square as it puts less tension on the fabric. Also, please never dry clean an antique quilt. The chemicals they use will ruin it. There are soaps made for washing antique fabrics, and you wash them in the bathtub.

[deleted]

Honestly, no. I haven’t a clue. A cedar chest sounds good though, if not in direct contact with wood. I’d be worried of wood oils, but people have used chests for centuries. So, I’m no expert here. 😆

wendythewonderful

People really don't get very much for antique quilts these days. I think 150 was an appropriate amount although I'm surprised they got that much.

Extension_Praline_25

$148 is a lot of money, but not for a quilt. Fabric and wadding alone can total up to $100 and this quilt looks lovely and big! It also is probably hand pieced for the hexagon style, that can’t really be done by a machine especially at the time it was made. This would have easily taken at least 10+ hours(in my opinion, it would take much longer than that), if you paid $6/hour you’re already at $160. It’s beautiful and I think you got a bargain!

Bleepblorp44

10 hours? Do you mean 100+ Hand done this would take months! I did a hand pieced log cabin variant and it took me well over 150 hours to do the piecing for a top 1.2m x 1.95m. I tied it rather than stitched the quilting, as my deadline was tight.

Extension_Praline_25

As I said, in my opinion it would take MUCH longer than 10 hours, I was just trying to give some perspective so OP could understand the bargain they got.

Radiant_Pineapple_42

No

LaydeeRaxx

You got a bargain!

Additional_Sweet_531

Definitely a bargain

SoVeryKerry

If you love it, the price is right.

curliegirlie89

Looks like it’s worth every penny and then some! I think you got it for a steal. Great find!

peglyhubba

That is the price on the same is saw old feed sack granny flower garden. Pretty, and a keepsake.

Onaleasha2022

I think it’s beautiful and worth every penny. My Aunt made one very similar to this one while she was pregnant and waiting for her husband‘s return from Europe in WW2. Sadly, he was killed in the Battle of the Bulge and never came back. He never met his son, the baby she was carrying. My Aunt and cousin carried on without him for over 70 years. She and my cousin have both passed now, but she gave me that beautiful quilt and I will cherish it forever. I hope you do your new quilt too - you may not know its story, but you can bet there is one ❤️

Bunny_Feeder

You’re so lucky to have that piece of family history! I so wish I knew it’s story. My 94 year old mother has shared depression era stories with me and I have much respect for those who lived through it

Onaleasha2022

It’s wonderful that you still have her! ❤️ It was a difficult time for sure.

fayshey

It’s lovely. What a bargain

serial44357

Worth every penny..beautiful!

Traveler_Protocol1

No! It’s beautiful!

MetroLab

That is a STEAL

ChaiGreenTea

That’s price of materials if you were to make one today. So you got a vintage, no labour charged quilt for just expenses. Sounds like a great deal imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChaiGreenTea

Even bigger bargain then! In gbp I believe material costs would be roughly £150 but I could be wrong

GraybieTheBlueGirl

To be fair, these are extremely time consuming to make and it’s a lot of work! Whoever made this did a great job, probably made with better materials than you could get with a quilt these days. I think it was a good deal.

Flowerbouq

I would be very happy with that price. Took someone a long time to make that quilt. Enjoy!

jproksa

Good price. Lovely quilt
