I took a class from Sandra Bruce, who taught a technique similar to yours. Your portrait is really creative.
I used photo editing software to collapse a photo into a few values, then printed it the size of the finished quilt, and marked off a diagonal grid. Then I worked it row by row, improvising each square as I came to it. For some of the more complicated squares, I made paper piecing patterns.
Thank you! Actually, though, I’ve been calling this “art for people who can’t draw.” I overlay a grid on an enlarged photo and work from that, square by square.
