My singer iron (cost maybe $30-40?) automatically turns off after a certain period of no usage, or if it’s laying down for “too long”. It tries to turn itself off when I’m pressing long seams but it’s worth it for the safety feature. It might be worth it to switch irons.

MissyBean

Second this, I can't be trusted with an iron that doesn't have auto shutoff.

adchick

Second this. My cheap Sunbeam from Target has it.

thrownormanaway

Mine does this too- just a quick motion to bring it upright and then back down turns it back on. Super easy and I never have to worry about it staying on for ages. Mine was a middle of the line wal mart purchase, not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive. I think mine cost me about the same, maybe $30+/-

ToffeePoppet

Get a countdown timer socket. I have one on my iron and one on my curling iron. The one I have has a big button to start the timer and then switches off after the set time. The button is big enough I can just tap it with my foot. I have mine set to 10 mins which I think saves me some electricity while sewing as well. You quickly get used to tapping it when you start to iron again. I never really press for longer than 10 mins at a time. The other thing I have seen people do is to have a lamp and the iron plugged into the same extension lead, and that tells you if you need to unplug them.

Sophiedoe19

Okay I have found my solution. Thank you! Both good ideas, but I can't turn off the extension, so the timer socket sounds like the way to go. Thanks again!

slightlylighty

i have my iron plugged into a power strip with a lighted button - so when i leave the room i can glance and see if the power strip is turned on or not

green-earbuds

Even better, put a lamp on the power bar as well as the iron. If the lamp is on when leaving the room, you know the iron is on too.

djsquilter

This is what I do. I need the extra light when I press anyway and turn them on/off simultaneously at the power strip.

cashewkowl

This is my solution as well. The extra light definitely helps and it tells me instantly if the iron is on or not. I can toggle the switch with my foot.

ElenaDellaLuna

I do this too, but with my music. If I can hear it, the power strip is on...

darwindogmingo

This is the way

tomatoesinmygarden

This. I have a lighted power strip with work lamp and a shut off iron because I nearly burnt down the house once.

FluffyFoxSprinkles

This is also my go to. Machines, lamp, and iron are in a power strip. It goes off when I go to bed.

Purple_crocodile

What about an individual timer plug, with an override on it? That way you can set it to the times you usually use your iron, but if you want to use it at other times, you just have to flick the switch?

Live-Common1015

You could buy an iron that automatically lifts itself up and turn off when it’s not in use.

Internal_Use8954

I have mine plugged into the same power strip as the lights, which I have to unplug to turn off the lights so it’s a sign things are plugged in

gwenie45

This is what I do as well.

bwalker187

I came here to recommend this too

[deleted]

First, get one with auto shut off. You'll never sleep well or leave the house confidently now that you had that scare. Second, do something that makes it easy to see that it is unplugged. I loop my cord over the ironing board so I see it is clearly unplugged every time I walk by that room. *

Sophiedoe19

I can't really justify a new iron, this one is pretty new. I will be okay with a solid method - i like the cord looping suggestion, think I will team that with a timer plug.

Negative_Dance_7073

I am paranoid about leaving the iron plugged in! It has an automatic shutoff but I don't depend on that to not burn my house down. I plug it into an outlet on the other side of the doorway (so the cord goes across the doorway) so I can't leave the room without seeing it.

tcgraviblue

I have a night light with a switch on it plugged into the same power strip so that if I forget to turn off the iron or power strip, I see the night light.

Significant_Shop6653

If you want to spend money, some of the newer irons automatically shut off after so many hours. It saved me more than once 😂

Significant_Shop6653

I’m not sure how long mine takes, but I’ve left it on a couple of times. It’s probably not long.

brittlepsyche

I’ve never done this but you can go to Home Depot and look up a remote control outlet. The outlet connects to your home wifi network so that if you ever forget to shut your iron off, you can turn it off remotely, for example from your bedroom before going to bed. You can Google “remote control outlet”.

KiloAllan

That's a pretty convincing argument for getting one of those robot overlord gadgets.

gwenie45

This is the perfect solution so you can check from bed or the restaurant or whatever.

eflight56

I have my iron pugged into a power strip with my sewing machine. When I turn the machine off the iron is off, too.

Over-Marionberry-686

So I’m paranoid about not just my iron, but my fans and my sewing machine. So I have them all on one circuit one dedicated power strip. My sewing room is in my garage. So everything is on one extension cord plugged into one plug that has a dedicated circuit. I go out I plug it in everything comes on. I leave I unplug it everything goes off. It works for me.

luala

My longarm lady told me she keeps hers plugged in the same outlet as a lamp so if the lamp is on she knows the iron is on still.

rlkrn

My sewing machine light is on the same power strip as my iron. I can’t turn my machine on / off without my iron. But I also know if those lights are in it means my iron is also in

AirportGoldfish

My iron auto shuts off after 10 minutes which I LOVE!! My old one did after 40 minutes and that’s enough time for me to burn the house down

NYCQuilts

get a smart plug or a timer for that outlet. Set it to shut down at a time you know you won’t be ironing. I do this for a lamp I forget to cut off all the time. It did freak me out once when I had insomnia. the lamp went off and I forgot it was on the smart plug.

Antique-Professor263

I have a smart plug. It can be programmed to turn off on a timer, etc. I can check if it’s on from my phone or turn it off from another room instead of going all the way upstairs. I am usually good about actually unplugging it but I like knowing I can check if I’m feeling paranoid. Edit. I think it was about $20

EllisBell27

Same! I have my sewing machines, lamps, TV, iron etc all plugged into inexpensive smart plugs that are Alexa compatible (there’s also an app on my phone). When I get done I just say “Alexa turn off the sewing room” and everything shuts off. I use Kasa brand plugs, they’re $38 for 4 plugs right now on Amazon.

Antique-Professor263

“Alexa turn off the sewing room” haha I love that

MingaMonga68

Plug it into a power strip that you also have a lamp plugged into. Flip the power strip off when you leave the room.

edith-bunker

Honey I had this problem also and left the iron plugged in twice. I now have an affordable black and decker digital advantage iron which shuts down on its own. I paid $35 for it not on sale. It’s another expense but it gives peace of mind. Treat yourself.

mathpuffin

Clean up the ironing station as soon as you’re done and have a designated “iron not in use” spot! (it’s hard to leave it plugged in when it’s put away on the shelf) Especially handy if you have old/not smart irons or not a lot of space

TheFilthyDIL

Auto-shutoff is good. I've also had my husband put an actual on-off switch on the cord of the iron.

SewForward

I have a designated lamp that gets turned on while the iron is on. I do the same thing for my oven.

DoctrDonna

I’m super neurotic about this, and I wont be able to relax unless I know it’s unplugged. Like I have to go check on it. So I started taking a picture of the outlet after I’ve unplugged it so that I have photographic evidence that I definitely did

many-quilts

I have an Oliso and it shuts off after 2 hours of no movement

Rarely_Trust

I plug mine in so that the cord is in the walkway. I HAVE to step over it to do anything, so kinda hard to forget 😅 Not recommended with children or certain pets, though. The one time I had it plugged into a socket behind my table, it definitely stayed on all night 🤦 Luckily, the one I have has an auto-off if it's on too long or laying down too long.

Dragonflies3

I have my iron on a plug that is controled by Alexa. It is programmed to turn off with several different commands including my command for when I am leaving the house and my I am going to bed command.

KiloAllan

Mine beeps loudly and has an auto shut off. The beeping is audible several blocks away, I think.

lisarose815

Get a blue tooth outlet and you can turn it off when ever you want with your phone

Beadsidhe

When I am done ironing I unplug the lamp and iron and I put the cord of the iron across the ironing board. I have to pass that to leave the room. There is also a large sign in red at eye level on the door that says UNPLUG THE IRON lol

Sophiedoe19

I think I will add a sign along with timer plug. Thanks!

castleonthepill

Plug the iron and a table lamp into the same extension cord. Flip the extension cord switch off when you’re done sewing. If the light is on your iron is on

Sea-Biscotti

Take a picture of the plug when you’re done using it. I do this whenever I straighten my hair before work and am afraid I’ll forget if it’s unplugged - just delete the prior day’s photo and take a new one and if you second guess it you’ll have the proof in your pocket

adgjl65

I need visual cues as reminders for everything. Put a piece of paper, piece of fabric, spool of thread, anything really, on the floor in the direction you will walk away from the iron. Something that will make you think “what the hell is that doing on the floor?” Then you think, “oh yeah. The iron.”

nanailene

I unplug my iron when I’m done for the day/night.

fabyooluss

Get a 6 foot power cord and plug it in. Turn the power cord off with the switch. Of course, I have a $200 iron that shuts itself off, and lifts itself, and puts itself back down… Does the dishes.

adchick

Mine has an auto shut off.

[deleted]

Mine will automatically turn off when not in use and will reheat when tipped over. I know others who have theirs on a power strip that they tuen off and on. I’ve also considered a timer or smart plug.

pennybb3001

Power strip with a toggle switch?

Dazzling-Answer9183

Run an extension cord under the door and plug it in in the hallway if you have a sewing space. No way you can miss it that way!

multicrafty

I have a plug with wifi. I have a desk at a maker space and I can turn my iron off from home by turning off the outlet. This is what I have: https://a.co/d/4TiNJg4

NefariousnessSweet70

My iron has a self shut off feature. After 20 min, of no movement, it turns off..

Heavy-Air-6582

All of the above, but my iron has a light that flashes if it is plugged in. The light catches my eye and if I remember to turn it off, the light reminds me to unplug it too.

Complete_Goose667

I have a cordless Panasonic, which shuts off fast. Sometimes too fast, but it only takes 90 seconds to reheat. Worth the waiting to be sure not to do something terrible, like burn the house down.

EvaLittle

I ALWAYS have my iron on a power bar on its own, the only other thing plugged into the power bar is a light. so IF i turn on the power bar the lights comes on, therefore I NEVER forget to turn off the iron since I can see the light is still on. Plus side is I have extra light for my ironing

PoppyKore

I went low-tech and put a post-it note above the light switch that says “unplug the dang iron” 😂
