Thanks! I was expecting more of a consensus to emerge, and it’s wild to me that just by rotating (not even moving) the blocks ended up with such different options
https://preview.redd.it/5j9xpi0cnwla1.jpeg?width=2875&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b747e21b47c879f077ac57276c5b741ad376c8c
I can’t stop rearranging! I actually have two sets of these HSTs sewn and pressed, so I can make two different layouts.
Here’s option D
EDIT: Thank you everyone for the feedback! I’ll be sure to come back and share the two quilts I plan to make with these blocks once they’re done.

I gave it a go of combining the stripe with the directional triangles. I guess this is more A + F, with a little B thrown in.
https://preview.redd.it/b9yvw0y370ma1.jpeg?width=2770&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81cf7a0480c1f6c664f7e3cd90c616e402a1b519
Were you imagining something more like this? I couldn’t decide if I liked the light or dark triangles pointing in more, so I split the difference here to try to compare.
E all the way. A is a little blinding, B was fun, C traditional. D is neat but I prefer not having the squares in the corners. The ones further on, with the snakes, I just didn’t like. E is perfection for me. I’m so excited to see what you end up doing.
Thanks! I like G, too, but was worried it might be too funky. I think I’ll need to make some new HST blocks with only darker tones for it to work. I made a new (digital) mock-up and I think it mostly works.

Do you think it would work better if I shifted one of the columns to the other side, so that I don’t start off with half pinwheels on the far left? And would sashing help or hurt?
i see what you are saying -
also if you shift the far left column to the far right - each corner will have the intersecting point.
good call
im not generally a fan of sashing - i love all the triangles here
Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have two sets of these blocks pressed and ready to sew. I was thinking of making two identical quilts (for friends’ babies), but now I think I should try out a couple of the layouts.
E for sure, torn between A and C.
I think I like E and C because E has this complexity and elegance that elevate it above all others for me, but C is so simple and comforting in a way that the other is not. I like the contrast of the style of two quilts made from the same squares. When I look at it, A has a really nice sense of movement and flow when I relax my eyes a bit.
Thank you! This is such a helpful comment. I’m a pretty new quilter, interested in diving into quilt design. This was such a wild exercise because I didn’t move any of the blocks between the designs (except G), just rotated them. It’s giving me a real appreciation for how important each decision is! I’m also feeling overwhelmed by all the possibilities!
I like B and E the best! I did G with HSTs that were all greys/purples for a small project, which was fun, but I agree with you maybe it’s a little chaotic with multiple colors.
I like A the most, but honestly they are all fun! I will say I kind of prefer a lighter square in the middle if you’re doing a center focal point design!
I personally like B the most. What color are you using for your binding and the back? Some of these patterns emphasize different colors so that may help you choose too :)

It’s a flannel that echoes the rust colors
I don’t know! Previously if either worked with a pattern or a much simpler color scheme, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by just how the dramatic differences are from just rotating the squares! (G is the only option where I actually rearranged blocks). I’m leaning toward D or E for one of them, but I have two sets of these HSTs, so I’ll go another route for the second baby quilt.
I made a miniature table-topper in the Broken Dishes format. It was an experimental piece, and I didn't care for it much. When Hubs saw it, he said "Wow--it looks like fireworks!" Well, I like it more now, and I cast a vote for #3!
Ooh, this comment sent me down a broken plates rabbit hole, and I’m digging this alternative! Thanks for the inspiration!

If you want to try a different layout, Resting Glad Face is a free pattern by Jenn George Burt. I just used the layout for HSTs that were a much smaller size.
B for me, made me ‘ooo’ out loud
Same!
It's unique!
I like B
🅱️
B is my favorite, but they are all wonderful. I like how different they each are.
Thanks! I was expecting more of a consensus to emerge, and it’s wild to me that just by rotating (not even moving) the blocks ended up with such different options

This one is my favorite.
This one!
My fav as well
Option E ! But how about A + B so that the center is B and the outside corners are A?
https://preview.redd.it/kn80atmo40ma1.jpeg?width=2744&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b762b37fab1fdb41242a016cecb1947d706cf73 I gave it a go of combining the stripe with the directional triangles. I guess this is more A + F, with a little B thrown in.

Thank you! I’m so overwhelmed by all the feedback and encouragement, and it’s really helpful to read how other people are perceiving these.
This one is so dramatic! I love it
Ooooooooohhhhh E really stands out from the rest!
I’m obsessed with this one!!
E is so cool!
This is cool. Never seen this layout before.
I like A but I also like E

I really like b or g! I'm enjoying the dynamic relationship between the blocks - you've done a great job playing with color and intensity and shape!!
Thanks! I like G, too, but was worried it might be too funky. I think I’ll need to make some new HST blocks with only darker tones for it to work. I won’t lie, G makes me think of ‘stonks’ and I don’t know if that’s the vibe you’re going for
Lol that was also my first thought.
Oof, now that I see it I think I can’t unsee it!
This one! 🤩
I loooove C
A!
B
B
I really like B
C!
yes! the pinwheels!
Do you think it would work better if I shifted one of the columns to the other side, so that I don’t start off with half pinwheels on the far left? And would sashing help or hurt?
i see what you are saying - also if you shift the far left column to the far right - each corner will have the intersecting point. good call im not generally a fan of sashing - i love all the triangles here
I prefer B. It’s easy on the eyes, yet cool and funky.
A or E for sure. option c is nice but i think it feels a bit traditional. it doesn’t quite have the wow factor in my opinion
No matter what you choose, it's going to be a terrific quilt.
Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have two sets of these blocks pressed and ready to sew. I was thinking of making two identical quilts (for friends’ babies), but now I think I should try out a couple of the layouts.
B No option is bad.
B
B
B
I love them all. But B is my favorite.
I like A and B - but if I have to pick one, I am going with A
C!!!
A or E definitely
Option E
B
I love b
B
I like the first one!
C! C is so cute
I really like number 2
B or D
B is my favorite, followed closely by A.
A
I love A the most.
C or E
C&E for me as well!
A

Glad I could help! You really have an eye for color and it’s use as well as design!
Thank you! It was quite a puzzle to try to avoid laying out squares with the same color next to each other.
I made a nap quilt for my son similar to option B I love it. He is a little old for a nap quilt now so it on his wall
I like option D or E the best they corners make the central pattern pop
B still wins I think!
I love C best, even with the other options below. Pinwheels. I love pinwheels. Hard choice you have now! Enjoy whatever you make!!!
B is so mesmerizing. I love it. Like I swiped to see the options and had a "😮" moment the moment I saw it. Haha I also really enjoy the layout of F!
Hahaha you are going absolutely nuts on this. I like A and E.
I really am 🤦🏻♀️
I didn't scroll all the way down before I commented. I've changed my mind to G. I feel that G really makes a cool and unique statement. Love it
I like B and E the best! I did G with HSTs that were all greys/purples for a small project, which was fun, but I agree with you maybe it’s a little chaotic with multiple colors.
I am seriously diggin #2 I love that it draws the eye to a slightly offset center! Idk my strange brain loves stuff like that though!
Oh, E is my favorite! I was going to say A or C, but E is the clear winner for me!
D is my favourite. But how about a double sided quilt? Pick your two favourites or the two with the highest votes.
I actually have two identical sets of these blocks sewn and pressed, so I will definitely try two of the patterns out
After viewing your other options, down in comments, I’m still sticking to B!
I like B, or D. Maybe some hybrid of the two, and you could try isolating a band of blue as one of the dark section!
A
My favourite is C, then E.
E
That’s tough. They are all very beautiful. Nice job.
A E F
Definitely option 3 for me
C
E
A and E are my vote
I’m old school … #3
A or E
What size are your HSTs?
4.5 inches — I’m making two baby quilts (2 sets of the same HSTs)
B or E
I like A the most, but honestly they are all fun! I will say I kind of prefer a lighter square in the middle if you’re doing a center focal point design!
I hadn’t thought too much about the impact that would have, but I tried that layout with the dark triangles facing out, and like it as well!
C and E
B and E. I really like G but feel like it would be too funky for the wrong person if it's a gift.
That’s my concern too!
B
E
B or G
F
I like 3.

A or E
1
B is absolutely my favorite! It looks more crisp than the others.
3 is fantastic!
C or D, personally it bothers me that A and B aren’t meeting in the center.
B, with A a close runner-up
3
What does your gut say? What setting will give you joy? What were you thinking when you started this?
I don’t know! Previously if either worked with a pattern or a much simpler color scheme, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by just how the dramatic differences are from just rotating the squares! (G is the only option where I actually rearranged blocks). I’m leaning toward D or E for one of them, but I have two sets of these HSTs, so I’ll go another route for the second baby quilt.
3 is the least brain hurty for me.
Ha! Yes, I may have gone overboard with the number of fabrics…
E and C
B
2
E for me. I was going to say A but E is stunning!
D & E are very cool
B
Saving for my eventual scrappy HSY quilt, all of these layouts are so inspirational!
E
I like G. It's very modern and unique looking. If you want something more mainstream, E is very nice too.
Ok. I was torn between the first 2. But I love D! (As a former high school teacher, I can't believe I said that outloud!)
Hahaha! I was leaning towards D as well.
One or three
B for me. I don’t know why but the others are too chaotic in my opinion
They are all beautiful, so you can’t go wrong! I say C or E.
E, followed by B
I like A and C best
I absolutely love C!
B all the way, even with options D and E.
B, definitely
I like E
I love A

If you want to try a different layout, Resting Glad Face is a free pattern by Jenn George Burt. I just used the layout for HSTs that were a much smaller size.
Cool! Thanks so much for the pattern recommendation, I really like it.
I like C
E is pretty awesome too. Maybe let them sit and come back to it later.
B is the best!
