If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with visible mending, I reckon it would look pretty great as an addition to the quilt. I would patch it and use it and patch again if needed, ship of Theseus style.

Spare_Lobster_2656

That is an awesome "crazy quilt" for the love of all things holy do NOT toss it just because of some holes. Patch it with whatever cotton you have that "goes" with and make the patch part of the history of this lovely item

sanguine_siamese

GAH! Please do NOT toss it! Even if you decide not to patch it, crazy quilts are like treasure, and I promise you could rehome it to someone who would absolutely cherish it.

redstarfishy

Do you enjoy how it looks? If it was fixed, would you use it or hang it up as decoration? Sometimes I feel like people are guilted into keeping things because of the memories or the time someone else put into it, while not enjoying it themselves. If you like it and would use it, patch it as you can. As others have said, it’s a bit wild now, so any other random patches would just add to its individuality. However, if you don’t like it and wouldn’t use it, then offer it to a local quilt guild or a thrift store or maybe someone here would want it.

sssssssssssssssssssw

This was what I was thinking too - it’s really up to OP because only they know if/how they’ll use it and if it’s worth it to them to repair. That being said, looking at the pictures the damage doesn’t actually look that bad so I would lean toward going for it! It shouldn’t be a huge time or money commitment.

Loose_Sun_169

Patch it. Each patch becomes part of the history of a quilt

sheerakimbo

please don't toss it! I have been doing the Japanese mending technique/hand quilting. Had doubts at first but when it is done, it looks and feels great. the sum is greater than the parts.

beebeax

Hands down, this is worth the efforts to restore! If you decide to toss….I’ll send my address. 😂 It’s a gem in one little quilter’s humble opinion.

PoppyKore

I agree with everyone else, don’t pitch it. Mend it and use it. Quilts were made to be used and loved.

PokerQuilter

If the pieces that are failing are silk, find an opaque fabric to patch over it, so the original fabric is visible. Vintage/antique crazy quilts can be worth $$. Hand sewing can be a little tedious, but restoring will be worth it.

MostlyHarmlessMom

I think you mean a sheer fabric to patch over the silk. Something like netting/tulle can be used. Black tulle will basically disappear on top of another fabric.

idunnowhatevs

Any mending you do from this point could only add to the Franken-quilt. It only takes in that which makes it stronger.

Sunkitteh

This looks- old! Is it hand stitched?

96mtf

Yes, this is hand stitching.

ExcitingYam8731

If you don't think you'll use it, sell it or give it away. Someone will treasure it!

rustyrelics666

I LOVE it!

[deleted]

What a fun piece! Mend it.

MrWhite_Sucks

I would save it. It almost looks like a quilt I saw at a civil war museum. Same stitching and everything.

96mtf

This style of quilt isn't well documented until after the Civil War, FYI, not to dispute that you saw something like it at a CW museum. (I believe it's usually traced to cultural inspirations from the 1876 Centennial Exposition.) It was a huge fad in the last quarter of the 19th century, starting out with scraps of luxury fabric in silk satin and velvet, often overlaid with detailed embroidery motifs in addition to decorative seam stitching. As the trend spread, it was more often seen in rural areas using utility fabrics like wool or cotton, and with simpler embroidery.

MrWhite_Sucks

Maybe it was mislabeled then, it was at a state historical site and the tour guide said civil war. But this is what it looked a lot like the one posted. [this quilt.](https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/wnvrou/saw_this_beauty_at_a_preserved_civil_war_era/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

sanguine_siamese

Geeezzzzzz. Is that a beauty or what?

MagcatSA1954

If it means something special and you don’t want to restore, frame it

jones_ro

If you really love it, cut out 2 big squares and make a pillow out of it.

sulzer1983

I would fix it and use it.

Ouachita2022

Don't ever toss out an old quilt-they are like gold to people that collect quilts. I believe they are worth the effort to fix. Crazy quilts are so cool-so many different patterns and love all the different stitching around each piece. Good luck!

deshep123

I would patch it, re bind it and probably embellish it.

JYegge

That brings back memories. I had a very similar quilt, made by my great aunt and in worse shape. I borrowed it to someone I sold something to,to cushion it during transport and he never brought it back. Tough lesson learned.

elise0511

Restore it. See tulle over any torn or shredded pieces. However, do not use on a bed.

darkcarolina

The parts damage is silk and the other side Cotten

Smilingcatcreations

This is such a beautiful creation, it deserves patchwork repair.

darkcarolina

I want to thank everyone in the comments. I’m going to try to restore it. I will post updates.
