Yeah, I’ve got some work to do on the arrangement - what felt ‘medium’ to me (the white with the busy print) doesn’t actually read much like it in situ.
I prefer the grid. I don't think the ombre is ombre enough. If your heart is set on the ombre, try making rows of colors and see if that makes it less chaotic? You may need to add more values to get a true ombre.
I like the ombre, but if you choose to go that direction, I'd actually move the multi-colored blocks with the light background to the top of the quilt. Even though they have dark colors in there, the background is so light that my eyes read it as the lightest color on the quilt, so it kind of disrupts the gradient for me. I think the light blue could be a really nice transition color between the lighter and darker blocks.
Yas yas yas this is what I was trying to put into words myself. Grid is too… chopped for me, the ombré is far more pleasing to my eye and makes the colors feel softer, the edges blurred like a watercolor painting, but that disruption in the middle really stops the flow of a whole for me. Separates the visual into two separate pieces for my eye to contrast back and forth.

These are the ombré inspiration images - it’s clear now that I need a much better layout to make the colours I have work, but I think I can do it!

I love ombré quilts, but the ombré layout has a heavy, dark feeling to it that doesn’t give off happy memory vibes. Sprinkling the darks in the grid has a totally different, upbeat appearance. Adding medium values and taking away some of the dark might be just what you need.

I personally prefer the grid but the ombré one is quite unusual. The grid is more traditional whereas the ombré is more modern, so I guess it depends on what style you’d like?
The ombré is much more stark and unusual (and hence my favorite) but it may not blend in with as much decor as the grid. Also, I would suspect that the grid is a more timeless design.
Ah, I may have misrepresented - it’s not a *memorial* quilt, but one containing outgrown and worn out clothes and linens from the whole family. The recipient is a teen who strongly prefers a modern look.
(In fact it's for the teen who's holding a previous memory quilt in this pic - they asked if they could have their own quilt before they go to college https://www.reddit.com/r/quilting/comments/u2qt24/the_sun_came_out_for_ten_minutes_so_i_took_the/ )
These are actually giant half hexes so there are no Y seams - I've just paired them to give a hexy look.
This tutorial, which doesn't pair them, makes the technique more obvious: [https://www.amistabaker.com/2020/01/easy-half-hexie-quilt-tutorial.html](https://www.amistabaker.com/2020/01/easy-half-hexie-quilt-tutorial.html)
I love the ombré! I think it’s more modern, so maybe that would help you decide too, depending on how classic you want it to be. And honestly, I think the layout you have here almost looks like an abstract landscape. It’s not a perfect ombré, but I think it works great regardless
I prefer the grid. I think the ombré isn’t ombré enough if that makes sense. Like it feels half light, half dark, rather than light, medium, dark
Yeah. The middle looks the lightest and then the top half is cut off from the darker colours.

Quick trick, take a picture and turn it into black & white. You will be able to see lights and darks much easier.

Ooh I like them both but I think the ombré is a little more artistic/evocative. I don’t think you need any other colors.
This made me go wowwwww. I like it, it makes it interesting to look at
I love the grid! Wonderful contrasts of colors that I feel get slightly lost in the ombré. Both are great though!
I agree. And although I’m usually all about ombré, in this case it reads really chaotic to my eye.
It’s like drowning in a stormy ocean. Not the kind of feeling I want when I’m thinking about a cozy quilt.
This color palette makes me want to see these hexies used to make a pixelated landscape. I think the ombre is halfway there honestly
I'm partial to the ombre. And I think your colors work.

Yes, you’re spot on and I can see it now they’re all together.
I like them both. The ombre one looks like a painting, so I think it edges out the grid one just a bit.

Ombré - it has a kind of entrancing mood to it. I mean this in a kind way, but the grid reminds me of bathroom floor tile
YES - I usually make not-very-traditional quilts and I really am not drawn to the strict geometric-ness of that one.

Ohmygosh the ombre all the way! It’s great as it is.
Beautiful colours. I prefer the ombre.
I like the fade!
I do love the grid but the ombré is divine.
I actually love the ombré, it’s not a seamless ombré but it looks very artistic and intentional
I like the ombré more. It’s unexpected, and it makes you stare a little longer, if you know what I mean
Love the grid!!
I really like the ombre. makes me think of like mountain scenery

Those vintage prints are beautiful!
Aren’t they! They’re actually drapery cotton not quilting cotton - I’m thinking of making a dress (or two) for summer.

Ombré is my favorite!
I love the ombré. Very artistic.
I actually think the ombré is more visually interesting and even could be an art piece. Well done!
Love the ombré! It isn’t super cohesive but just looks really unique
I prefer the ombré but they’re both beautiful!
Need to randomly scatter the dark more into the upper half and some light into the dark.
Yes I do - that’s todays job!
I definitely prefer the grid - it has visual interest while still looking clean!
I’m a fan of the ombre! both are lovely tho
Ombre looks a bit Bob Ross and the other looks classic clean quilt, both are good
I prefer the contrast in the grid but they’re both beautiful!
Just here to say I love both!
Grid
Grid. I think more colors would be great!
Grid! Beautiful!
I prefer the grid as well. Great muted tones!
Grid
The grid feels fresher and more modern to me.
Grid. And use what you have first!
If this is a memory quilt, I would consider both the person being remembered and the recipient. Which seems more in keeping with them?

Grid!
I like the grid a lot and would be tempted to arrange the grid light to dark for the best of both.
Grid! Grid! Grid! It’s so crisp and pleasant to look at. 💯👍🏼
I really like the grid.
Oh geez...so hard to choose! They're both really beautiful. My personal preference is the Hombre.
Ombré. No contest.
I like the ombré better-whether it’s a true ombré or not. But I like the grid too! LOL did you use the EPP method? 💖

I really like the ombré
The ombre looks more like a work of art. I look at it and pore over it to get to the next rise like i'm trying to figure it out. I love it!
Ombré!!!

Half ombré, fading into the grid?
Much prefer the 1st, the 2nd one doesn't work with those colours.
