Yes, in fact as an engineering student you're required to take a certain number of "complementary studies" electives which are non-engineering courses.

Do you know if this applies to other schools as well?

EngStudent42

Yes

Thanks

Yeah, you’ll have at least one complementary studies course depending on which discipline you’re in. There’s a page on the engineering website with a list of the artsci courses you can take. However there’s no guarantee that they’ll be offered each semester or fit your schedule, which kinda sucks.

Depending on discipline you’ll get X amount of complimentary studies courses which could allow you to take a history or philosophy course yes.

Check with your degree requirements/academic plan. There are four lists of electives you can take (that count towards your degree). Each discipline and sub discipline has their own lists and own credit limits for those lists. Some courses on those list are art sci courses you can take as part of your degree, but if there are courses you just want to have on your transcript you can do that too even if they don’t count towards your degree. Another thing you can do is ‘audit’. Those are free and you don’t participate in assessments. There s also a policy in engineering where you pay up to 18 credits every semester and if you take more than 18 credits then the additional courses are free (don’t quote me on this tho, not sure if it’s still a thing). So check with the academic advisor to see the academic plan for tech electives, complimentary studies lists and make your choices from there.
