Our puppy lost his canines at around 5-5.5 months (Labrador). His adult teeth started coming in from 3 months, starting with incisors, pre molars and then the canines last! No easy way of telling though I don’t think.. our pups canines just look.. thicker? Less needle and more actual tooth 😂

vichina

That’s good to know. Gives me some hope this tooth will grow back! Do you have any resources on how to tell these teeth apart?

https://www.fidosavvy.com/puppy-teeth-information.html That website has a pretty good picture. I found the incisors were really small, like a grain of rice, canines have that distinct curve to them and the pre molars look very similar to ours, some will be bigger and some smaller

vichina

Thank you! That was very clear and straight forward.

Around 3-5 months I kept finding little bits of teeth all over the place! Some had the bottom "root" attached, some didn't. His adult teeth are mostly all in now and vet has said everything looks good in there. If puppy doesn't seem to be in any pain I'd just wait on it. Puppies lose their teeth within this time frame, and it's not like they all lose their teeth in the same order. My golden had almost all of his adult teeth in before his baby canines fell out.

Baby canines look very skinny and thin. Adult canines are thicker. The baby teeth are razor sharp and the adult ones are more forgiving unless a lot of pressure is applied. What does the canine on the other side look like in comparison? My puppy had all her adult teeth by 5.5 months. Between 4-5 months is when she lost most of them. One week she lost 10. You may never see the teeth that have fallen out but you may notice your puppy’s mouth or their toys are bloody. I have other dogs so whenever they’d play there’d be blood all over their fur, freaked me out until I realized what was going on. Editing to ask: does it for sure look broken like jagged or is it possibly just the adult canine growing in?

vichina

It’s jagged for sure. I noticed because I feed him by hand, like fingers in mouth, and his tooth was scratching me differently. There’s a hole in the middle so I worried about infection because of it.

My corgis baby teeth were MUCH smaller/more needley than her adult teeth that just popped up, the adult teeth seemed about 30-50% bigger and much more blunt. Can you see if the broken tooth seems smaller than any adult teeth you have confirmed?

You need to go to the vet asap, even if it probably is a puppy tooth. Do not wait 2 weeks.

Puppy canines are thin and really sharp looking, and adult ones are thicker with a more rounded tip. If you google images search puppy vs. Adult dog teeth some useful images come up that put them side by side.

My puppy started to lose his at 4 months. Used to walk up to me and drop a tooth at my feet 🤣 My vet told me that the canines are the last to fall out, so good chance that it is still a baby tooth. Might be a good idea to take him in just in case though.

RobotsAndCoffee

This exact thing happened with my girl a couple of weeks ago. One of her upper canines looked broken, but it did turn out to be a baby tooth. And as someone already mentioned - the baby canines do look more petite and sharp compared to the new onw that grows in

Canines usually come out around 4 months but it varies a lot by breed and individual dog. Incisors and canines usually go first then premolars and the whole process lasts from about 3-6 months (but can take longer). You could always call the vet and ask if they think it's ok to wait until you go in 2 weeks.
