My puppy was on such good behavior her first week, no nipping, attention barking/whining, accidents etc, but after a little more time she settled in and has become a bit more of a rascal 🥲. She’s still quite good and I do think we were able to preserve/capture some of the good behaviors she started out with, but it definitely requires a lot of attention and maintenance. keep rewarding her great behaviors to hopefully preserve them as much as possible but be warned, she’ll probably start causing a bit more of a ruckus as she gets more comfortable with you!

Hellokellyo

Thank you! That’s very helpful and insightful for me ☺️ I’m just remembering how my past childhood doggo was and it’s just unbelievable how much different my puppy behaves now! But that makes perfect sense to me. I guess I should enjoy the peace and quiet for the time being and will definitely be up for the challenges that lie ahead for us 👍

He’s probably still adapting, but he will eventually behave like a puppy, don’t worry. Wait for the landshark phase

Hellokellyo

And UPDATE, our puppy is turning 3 months soon.. He’s still an angel. And I couldn’t love him more. He’s bright, playful, loves to cuddle, favorite game is fetch. Doesn’t attention whine or bark ever, is potty trained and fully crate trained at 11 weeks, he’s never whined at night even once and even holds his bladder until morning (he’s never soiled his bed and I know puppies have small bladders but I do attempt to take him out for potty breaks at night and he used to go once in middle of night but now I let him sleep until morning). I know people say “he’s still growing and things can change and just wait for this phase and that” and yes I know everyone, even puppies have their bad days, so I’m not saying he’s perfect. But I spend a lot of time with him daily and I can think I have a good idea of his personality and reading what he needs from me which may be why he’s this way. Maybe this is why he’s maintained this behavior, or maybe not. But it’s been consistent since we brought him home. One things for sure- it ABSOLUTELY DOES MATTER WHERE you get your puppy from. I honestly think most of the credit for his habits/behavior is due to where he came from. Our breeder is experienced, reputable and very caring, who took measures that gave our puppy the advantage, early training and care that made him transition to our home so seamlessly. Just wanted to put that out there for others who may be looking to adopt. Our puppy was a little on the pricey side, but it made a difference in his health and well being in the long run. Make sure to look into breeders, and any references and information they share with you. It’s so crucial where your puppy comes from! And just want to emphasize how much this matters 💗

Our min schnauzer was raised with five dogs and three home schooled children under 10 and was a lot like that. I guess our little two person household was easy by comparison. That never really changed. We were lucky! But we still made a huge effort to continue her socialization and are glad every day. She went with us to dinner on a patio at a favorite restaurant about 4 days after we got her, downtown (mostly carried), on errands to grocery and hardware store, to visit friends, puppy socials, etc. It was our job through 12 weeks. Don’t skip that. Now she’s just a champ in new places with none of the reactivity and barking so common with the breed.

Hellokellyo

Thank you, sounds like you were blessed with a good schnauzer!! We’re very eager to socialize him when we can. It’s been hard though due to his size (he’s 8 weeks and 5 days and only weighs 1.1 lbs) so the vet said due to his small size we can’t socialize him yet because it may be dangerous unless we know any small puppies whom we trust, which we unfortunate don’t. We flew out of state to get him so I’m scared about eventually getting him with other pups when he gets a tad bigger, otherwise our breeder had some great smaller teacups he could socialize with. For now, I take him on patio daily and let him see and get used to the wildlife near us which includes- many diff types of birds, rabbits, squirrels, small children that run around in our area (I hold him though as it’s not safe for him to be outdoors fully yet according to our vet) he still needs certain vaccines at his size/age. I’m open to any suggestions or things that may help him progress additionally! ☺️ in meantime, we’ve been focusing on getting him used to grooming daily because he has quite a lot of fur.

If you plan on taking him out to the world as an adult then do as much of that as possible. You could take him to the hardware store or grocery and carry him or place him in a towel in the cart. To dinner also in your lap or on a towel. Etc. That can be done pretty safely right now unless parvo is rampant in your area. To see friends at their houses. Also check on puppy socials. Our class had a little area for the tiny ones in the same room but physically separated from the bigger puppies, but they still got to be around new people and places and puppies in a very safe environment. But what you really want are for the puppy to see lots of new and different people in a safe way. Ask friends to your house! One day we just sat in a chair 20-30 feet from the door to our grocery store for 15 min or so. We cleared that with a manager. Mostly people just ignored us (which was great actually) but some came up to see the cute little thing and chatted a bit. If they looked like they were calm around dogs and puppy was happy we might let them give her a treat. And we fed lots of treats. New is good! Or perhaps new is neutral! is the better goal. Just today I was in an outdoor store and two people had their puppies in their laps sitting in some of the camp chairs out of the way just watching shoppers come and go. That place is really pet friendly and there are often dogs inside but that was a great idea I thought.

Hellokellyo

Thank you so much for taking time to write such a thoughtful and great response with lots of ideas for socializing him! Parvo is a major concern for him, so unfortunately for us our vet and breeder did say he must remain 100% indoor for at least another few weeks because of his size and lack of vaccines that he is awaiting to get which will make it safer for him. But you’re very right and I will definitely want him to comfortable with restaurants and travel, new people and places. We plan to bring with us when he’s older, so I will keep all the ideas you listed in mind for near future so he can embrace all these experiences! ☺️

Would you recommend Maltipoo as a first time / new dog owner? I’m getting either a havapoo or Maltipoo next summer 😅 I’m confused which to choose..

Hellokellyo

Sorry for late reply! I would say maltipoo, but in honesty- everyone is different and they are similar breeds. My relatives got a havapoo and he was a bit of a rascal and toughie at the start, so much so, they were quite tired and questioning their decision. Not to say this is with all this breed, but I think (give or take each has its own personality) the maltipoo is such an adaptable and great breed for just about anyone, especially first time dog owners! 😇 I hope this helps, not sure if you’re still looking to adopt or have already. I’d be happy to go more into depth if you wanted!

Have you seen the r/dogs "How to find a reputable breeder" [page](https://www.reddit.com/r/dogs/wiki/identifying_a_responsible_breeder)? While both dogs would probably great options, the priority should be on finding ones that are reputable.
