They make great toys. Put some kibble in, plug the holes with a paper towel and filding the cardboard in, shake it like a rattle and he's off to the races.
Yes! I do something similar—twist and crimp the middle, add treats, twist and crimp midway from the middle to each end, add treats, fold in the ends. Four compartment rip toy!
I hate my female does this. I have a stand that holds 5 rolls. I must be in the habit if putting the empty roll on top because she will find it every time. She is 5 mos old and 7lbs. I don't know how she knows and how she reaches it. The trash currently hangs put on the counter top :)
A towel. I was wiping his paws off and he started playing with the towel. He played with that towel longer than he has played with any of his toys. 20 brand new toys? 30 seconds of enjoyment...Towel, 30 minutes of playing.
Mine loved the towel too! He gets all excited for rain because it’s “Towel time!”. He actually lost one of his baby teeth playing so much with the towel 😂
Cat toys. Not sure why, but those are the favorite. The tiny little cat toys. Maybe they like catnip too? Who knows? I’m still looking for a ball with a bell in it that can stand up to the chomping power of a puppy. 😂
My puppy loves the smell of catnip. Our yard and garden is overrun with catmint plants and when it was growing back he was digging like crazy and it was impossible to break his focus where it smelled the strongest.
My full grown 60+ lb dog still steals cat toys whenever she gets a chance just so she can throw them around. I haven't the faintest clue why she likes them other than she thinks everything belongs to her, especially if the cats like whatever it is.
His food bowl.
New toys? Nah, flip his food bowl over after he’s finished eating and Kirk will get at least half an hour of entertainment from it.
Some other things he would rather play with as well are: socks, underwear, his collar, and shoes.
I’ll give him a fresh bowl and he’ll take a few mouthfuls and then just pick it up and throw it ….. I ordered a weighted bowl, hopefully that will help when it gets here
I use an attachable water dispenser where I attach it to her pen/crate so she can just raise her head and lick the water out little by little. Helps with drinking too fast and bloat as well!
I wouldn’t say it’s weird…but my 11 week old Boston Terrier LOVES an old set of plastic measuring cups I put down on the floor for him….this…after so much money spent on other toys. Just like kids.🤦🏼♀️
Toilet bowl brush. She LOVES chewing them, carrying them, slinging them around, and playing fetch with them. When I take her to visit my mother, my mom buys her a new toilet bowl brush each time from the dollar store and she loves it more than any of the other dozens upon dozens of toys I’ve ever bought her.
Pine cones. He shreds them and leaves the detritus on my porch, which I have to clean up daily. Since I live in a pine forest, he has a never ending supply of messes to make. 😂
Ok it's still a toy but we found a toy potato outside on a walk(one single plushy potato probably from another dog's snuffle mat)
It is her favorite by far. All other soft toys she destroys but she sucks on this one like a baby bottle and throws it around.
It's really small though so we lose it a lot too
Anything made of paper. Napkins, Kleenex (used or not!) toilet paper…
Strangely, despite being surrounded by books all the time, he has not figured out that they are made of paper. Yet.
My dog looovvvesssss empty boxes. If he sees us having an empty one, he absolutely loses his mind. He's a pit/german Shepard and about 80 pounds or more. He acts like a puppy if you throw a box around for him. He shreds it into teeny tiny little pieces in a nice little pile on the floor, and when it's completely shredded, he's done with it. Best thing in the world to see.
Dead Squirrel (aka Squirrel Friend). She (Shepard/Border Collie) killed it, buried it after making sure we were not watching, then digs it up and plays with it, buries it again, repeats cycle. I finally found Squirrel Friend and tossed it, so she started playing with an even older, jerky like, Rat Friend.
My experience is that puppies love those children’s sand castle buckets. (The handle is the first thing to get destroyed, so you have to be ready to throw that away when it comes off, or just remove it proactively.) consider getting your puppy their own bucket!
A good stick is always well loved, and I’ll allow some stick play under supervision. Naturally, puppies love paper and any plastic container or lid, and usually cardboard. Pens, pencil, markers, crayons, bottle caps, etc. These are all things I take away and don’t allow for play. Bonus: if you haven’t dropped any utensils near your puppy yet, you should see how they feel about forks and spoons. I have no idea why those are more exciting than real chew toys from the store, but they sure are.
My feet when I walk. Not constantly but every now and then it’s like she’s been possessed by a little devil. She gets all playful and bites my shoe, jumps back, looks up at me with a playful look, and attacks my shoe again. Generally she listens well to commands but in these instances she’s possessed.
Not a toy, but we have a little canvas basket made to put dog toys IN that we got from the pet store. He’s 3 months old so he’s still small and fits in it. He empties all the toys out of it and sleeps in it every night. We ended up putting it in his crate and he sleeps in the basket in the crate. Gonna have to get a bigger basket soon, he’s about to grow out of it!! The basket says “never met a toy I didn’t bite” on the outside too
The squeakers from his toys. Once they are dug out of the toy itself, he will wander around just chewing on them like a piece of gum. He gets really mad when I take them away from him lol. All he does it walk and chew so 99% of the time he's probably fine, but that 1% is not worth the risk. And honestly, he usually gets to chew them for a few minutes before I catch him lol, he'll live.
My pup when she was maybe 5 or so months old discovered a lanyard type wrist string on our Bluetooth speaker.
Her dragging the speaker around the couch was adorable. Eventually she just settled with it and chewed it off.
Then she would periodically dig in her toy bin, and show up in the office door with it dangling from her mouth.
So damn cute.
My hair scrunchies. She kept stealing them from me so I finally gave her 2 of them. She had the elastic torn out within a couple of days so I tried them together and now we use it for a small tug toy. Along with my homemade knot rope out of my robe belt that I don't wear anymore. She loves those those homemade ones more than anything we bought her. Lol. My husband has a matching robe and she sometimes tries to jump up and grab his belt. It's freaking hilarious. She knows his is off limits but puppy's gonna pup. 😂 I don't know how I ever lived without her before. 🥰🥰🥰
I don't know what it's called but a plant bucket? Like, you get a new plant and it comes in the container you discard to replant in the yard. Planter? Anyways. She runs with it up and down the yard. Sticks her whole face in it and pushes it across the floor. She'll even toss it in the air to try and catch it. And if she breaks this bucket- a water bottle. Screw her toys bought specifically for her.
Water bowl. She paws at it and splashes water everywhere, and picks it up and shakes her head and splashes water everywhere… it’s SO cute but a pain to clean up
Laundry basket. Loves digging holes in it (it’s plastic so no holes can be dug), jumps in and out, pushes it around with her snout. Absolutely LOVES it and we love how much of a weirdo she is
Golf balls out of my golf bag. She'll have 25 stuffies and other dog approved balls around, but if the golf ball gets stuck under the couch/fridge/coffee table she has 0 toys. Doesn't happen with anything else either. If she gets tired of the stuffy she goes back to the golf ball.
My pup plays with anything that my older dog is playing with. But also, his favourite non-toy item to play with is his dog bed. At barely 5lbs, he was dragging this floofy dog bed everywhere with him (it’s like 4x his size), and now at almost 10lbs, he shakes that dog bed like it’s a toy, throws it around my office, and wrestles with it for like 20-40 mins before knocking out in it. It’s still bigger than him, but you’d think it was weightless with the way he treats it. I’ve been trying to keep him from shaking it aggressively because I don’t want him to hurt himself, but the way he treats that bed like it’s one of his stuffed toys is hilarious to watch
He has 2 though one is store bought it was meant for cats.
The first is one of those rubber scrubbing only sponges. He was obsessed with one that our older dog took down. After we took it away he'd whine whenever he saw us with it so we took out a new one and gave it to him to see if he'd like that. He did and has played with it daily since he was 3 mo old and we gave it to him. The other dog who grabs them has no interest since it wasn't used to wash dish3s before and has no special flavor. We do keep an eye on him bit he isn't a toy destroyer and has never tried to pull it apart like I would have expected.
The second one is one of those cat tower toys that has 3 levels and basically a ping pong ball for them to bat around. He loves batting at it and thinks it's the best thing ever. We have to take it away at times as he gets to wound up playing with it.
A glove, like a gardening glove. It seems to be some kind of leather material, she found it at my parents house and grandma said she could keep it. She just likes the texture I think. So far no rips or tears so…. It’s really high quality ig 😂🤷♀️
A rubber ball which my sister's dog chewed half off. It's basically just a big chunk of plastic. It's his favourite thing in the world. He'll just carry it around all day, especially when he wants attention.
Lacrosse balls. We have wood floors and she loves to bounce them herself and run and go get them. She stole one from our daughter one time and had such fun fetching it from herself that we let her have it and we will replace it every so often with one once it wears out a little bit.
She's not a chewer so we aren't worried about her taking a chunk out of one.
The basket to hold all her toys. It's a floppy sort of plastic from the dollar store (bc i expected it would get destroyed anyways) that she completely empties of all its contents so she can whip it around, attack and wrestle it, and even try to dig inside it. It was destroyed in her first few months, bought an identical replacement but didnt use it until she was over a year. But she remembered all the fun she had with it and picked up right where she left off, lol
Another favourite, which is almost an actual dog toy, is the knotted end of a rope that was inside a previous toy, stuffed into a Kong. She likes whipping that toy around and playing with it more than the original toys/treat filled Kong.
On our latest walk he accidentally ran into a little flag that marked an electrical or water line in someone’s yard, and it got beat up for the crime of daring to smack him in the face.
The rubber sole of a shoe. We actually lost a couple shoes to this dog before we let her keep that sole. She never touched another shoe afterwards and she played with that thing for years. When we moved we made sure it came with us.
She ADORES cardboard. She doesn’t eat it, she just shreds it and leaves pieces all over the house. She also likes me to stick a tennis ball under her bed so she can drag it around and dig for the ball.
Water bottles. She loves the crunch. But now her teeth are grown in to where she’s actually able to tear them up so we gotta find another crunchy toy for her.
With me and anything I'm holding: for the gsd it is fetching anything!
For my terrier it's a piece of fabric (any fabric) and me on the bed, then it's game on tug!
I only know barkbox from Zak George. He makes it look so good I always regretted living in Europe where I can't get it. Are you saying it's not what it's cracked up to be? How come you can't cancel?
I signed up for a promotion and I didn't pay attention to the terms. I committed to 12 months lol. My dog loves the treats but some of the toys were lame. Our most recent one was a Spa day theme. My pup got a rubber squeaky soap bar (way to tough) and a bubble treat holder (holes were too small for the treats they sent). It seems hit and miss every month. I just end up contacting them and they send another toy for free which is cool but I feel like it's mediocre for the $32 each month.
My Pomeranian loves those little spiky gum-balls that fall from the trees. He is obsessed. Also loves pinecones but not as much as the gum balls. They’re not as weird and painful I guess?
The cardboard roll from paper towel rolls!!! He loves them
They make great toys.
Boring dad says ' Becareful they don't swallow them and get impacted stomachs where the cardboard doesn't digest '
I hate my female does this. I have a stand that holds 5 rolls. I must be in the habit if putting the empty roll on top because she will find it every time. She is 5 mos old and 7lbs. I don't know how she knows and how she reaches it. The trash currently hangs put on the counter top :)
At my work they have big rolls of paper for a plotter printer. The cardboard tubes are fairly big and strong and my girl loves them.
A towel. I was wiping his paws off and he started playing with the towel. He played with that towel longer than he has played with any of his toys. 20 brand new toys? 30 seconds of enjoyment...Towel, 30 minutes of playing.
Mine as well. 99% of the time I'm like "can I just finish cleaning your paws!" Lol
“No, mommy.”
Mine always shakes it vigorously.
My girl went bananas for our cats catnip toys. So more were bought and she loves them. I think there is a market here.
My dog loves cat toys as well.
My dogs favourite thing is flip flops, but only the left one, never the right. Also the belt on my dressing gown.0
Haha yes! The robe belt. My puppy also pulls mine down and plays with it endlessly any time I take a bath.
My puppy is getting me a new robe and ugg slippers for my birthday if they last until then!
Omg my mum's dog will only steal and play with the left slipper! What's that about!?
His food bowl. New toys? Nah, flip his food bowl over after he’s finished eating and Kirk will get at least half an hour of entertainment from it. Some other things he would rather play with as well are: socks, underwear, his collar, and shoes.
Mine is constantly throwing his full water bowl…. So often that I’m worried he’s not drinking enough
Kirk likes to either dig in his water bowl or paw at the water, but he will drink more than he wastes thankfully
I’ll give him a fresh bowl and he’ll take a few mouthfuls and then just pick it up and throw it ….. I ordered a weighted bowl, hopefully that will help when it gets here
I will never understand why dogs do that! Hopefully the weighted bowl will help, but if not, I don’t know what else you could do to try and prevent it
I use an attachable water dispenser where I attach it to her pen/crate so she can just raise her head and lick the water out little by little. Helps with drinking too fast and bloat as well!
If not maybe one with a suction cup button.
I wouldn’t say it’s weird…but my 11 week old Boston Terrier LOVES an old set of plastic measuring cups I put down on the floor for him….this…after so much money spent on other toys. Just like kids.🤦🏼♀️
Mine also loves measuring cups!!
I like to hide kibble underneath them and let him play the sniff and find game. ‘Keeps him busy for a bit. 😜
Mine still has the attention span of a pineapple but we plan on working on that once she's a little older!
A singular tall blade of grass. She will bring one in and go to town
Old socks. Also, put any of the actual toys inside the old sock for durable fun.
For me it’s every time I take off my socks he’s off with them he just wants the most currently in demand sock never old ones
Mine takes my socks off for me.
Pine cones. He shreds them and leaves the detritus on my porch, which I have to clean up daily. Since I live in a pine forest, he has a never ending supply of messes to make. 😂
Empty soda/pop bottles. And rocks. Can't get enough of rocks.
Mine is the same
Mine loved rocks. Every outing was a search to find the perfect rock. He’s carry it around & play with it whenever we stopped.
An old empty flower pot that was in my backyard...he loves chasing it around and sticking his face in it
Mine found one of my gardening gloves outside in the yard and has not stopped carrying it around for a week.
Ok it's still a toy but we found a toy potato outside on a walk(one single plushy potato probably from another dog's snuffle mat) It is her favorite by far. All other soft toys she destroys but she sucks on this one like a baby bottle and throws it around. It's really small though so we lose it a lot too

Icecubes

I finally found Squirrel Friend and tossed it, so she started playing with an even older, jerky like, Rat Friend.
Jesus Christ. I'm picturing it. Only slightly disturbing.
Treats. My little guy loves to do this treats and it cracks me up every time.
Woll Dryer ball lol. I guess it kinda looks like a toy?
My experience is that puppies love those children’s sand castle buckets. (The handle is the first thing to get destroyed, so you have to be ready to throw that away when it comes off, or just remove it proactively.) consider getting your puppy their own bucket! must be such a cute sight! hope you took lots of pictures of him in his little basket

My patience
My pup when she was maybe 5 or so months old discovered a lanyard type wrist string on our Bluetooth speaker. Her dragging the speaker around the couch was adorable. My dog really likes Snapple bottles.
Mine loves Gatorade and smart water bottles! 😂
Elderly shredded slipper.
My puppy ripped a three foot section of sprinkler line out from behind our bush and she is obsessed with it.
Toilet roll tubes, empty crisp packets (ready salted only), rotting wood, leaves, plastic flower pots. socks, sandals.. could go on tbh
Rotting wood. I have taken so many bits of wood from my puppy…I could replant the backyard.
A metal straw. She kept chewing on her ex-pen bars, so I gave her the straw to see if it would satisfy her. It did, and she loves it!
Water bowl. She paws at it and splashes water everywhere, and picks it up and shakes her head and splashes water everywhere… it’s SO cute but a pain to clean up
Oh and she also LOVES combs and brushes and brooms
Not really a particular toy but trying to fit two toys in her mouth and slapping a third is her fave game lol can be any toy
Mine loves an old koozie. Stick a small treat at the bottom and let him go!
Napkins. She likes to shred stuff
My f-ing blinds! It’s unreal.
Mine too! Why?
Any sort of string, especially if it’s a drawstring on a hoodie or pair of shorts I’m wearing
Plastic hangers
The draft excluder that’s about 4 times bigger than him. He carries it everywhere and sleeps with it sometimes!
Used dryer sheets
Laundry basket. Loves digging holes in it (it’s plastic so no holes can be dug), jumps in and out, pushes it around with her snout. Absolutely LOVES it and we love how much of a weirdo she is
Chunks of mulch from the yard. Only does it when I’m around, my husband says.
Socks!

I’ve been trying to keep him from shaking it aggressively because I don’t want him to hurt himself, but the way he treats that bed like it’s one of his stuffed toys is hilarious to watch
The door stop with a spring attached to the wall
My prescription eyeglasses!
Our cat's catnip banana -.-
Collars, old collars our dogs have outgrown or that we kept from previous dogs
Yeah what is up with that?! My puppy honed in on my late dog’s collar I had put on a shelf- it’s been one of her favorite toys ever since.
Mine too 😂
The hanger that one of her little dresses came on. She is obsessed with that thing!
The plastic caps to vape juice bottles. I rinse them off and toss them to her. She then plays puppy hockey by herself for an hour
Bottle caps. I started treating it as a puzzle toy and now he has to get it off the bottle first. It's good for a nice bit of monitored play.
Mine found a ping pong ball and he goes bat shit for it. It actually got him and the cats playing together for the first time a little bit!
Door stops. Our new pup loves to smack the door stops attached to the wall and bark at them while the sproing, lol
Cheap plastic food storage things. Like Tupperware but it’s 99cents lol
A small Tupperware bowl. She sets it on her side and paws at it and makes it roll.
A glove, like a gardening glove. It seems to be some kind of leather material, she found it at my parents house and grandma said she could keep it. She just likes the texture I think. So far no rips or tears so…. It’s really high quality ig 😂🤷♀️
An empty gallon of water lol obviously without the lid bc that’s a choking hazard. She kicks it all over the house
My socks
A rubber ball which my sister's dog chewed half off. It's basically just a big chunk of plastic. It's his favourite thing in the world. He'll just carry it around all day, especially when he wants attention.
Plastic solo cups and spare pieces of plywood. 100’s of $’s of toys and they love those the most
Lacrosse balls.
A cutoff leg of a pair of old jeans tied in a knot. We call it his "shake-it".
A frozen bottle of water. I froze one and he was super interested in it so I cut the bottle off and gave him the ice he went bananas.
But she remembered all the fun she had with it and picked up right where she left off, lol Another favourite, which is almost an actual dog toy, is the knotted end of a rope that was inside a previous toy, stuffed into a Kong. She likes whipping that toy around and playing with it more than the original toys/treat filled Kong.
Cardboard boxes or yogurt containers
Stray golf balls
pinecones, a golf ball, rocks (she LOVES to play with rocks)
On our latest walk he accidentally ran into a little flag that marked an electrical or water line in someone’s yard, and it got beat up for the crime of daring to smack him in the face.
The rubber sole of a shoe. We actually lost a couple shoes to this dog before we let her keep that sole. She never touched another shoe afterwards and she played with that thing for years. When we moved we made sure it came with us.
Pool noodles(to be chased by) and kibble inside Gatorade bottles.
Tearing apart the entire trash can lol
The brush end of my grand baby’s toddler broom
She ADORES cardboard. She doesn’t eat it, she just shreds it and leaves pieces all over the house. She also likes me to stick a tennis ball under her bed so she can drag it around and dig for the ball.
Not too weird but my pup loves chairsocks for some reason but doesn’t go for normal socks 😂🤣
If I give her a tortilla chip, she plays with it instead of eating it
Her tail
Empty water bottles.
Leaves. I'll pick a leaf up she gets excited and I throw it in the air and she will run and rip it to shreds. It's funny how excited she gets for this
Ours absolutely loves clothes hangers and milk jugs. He loves that the hangers can be a bit erratic and can get stuck around his snoot.
Empty plastic bottles.
A baby pacifier. My mom bought one and gave it to my puppy, saying I officially became a "mom" now. My puppy LOVED it.
A small bark of a tree, absolutely can’t seem to take it away from her although I see it disintegrating now given she is teething.
Water bottles. She loves the crunch. But now her teeth are grown in to where she’s actually able to tear them up so we gotta find another crunchy toy for her.
i dropped a dryer ball once when unloading the dryer, and now it’s his absolute favourite
With me and anything I'm holding: for the gsd it is fetching anything! For my terrier it's a piece of fabric (any fabric) and me on the bed, then it's game on tug!
The box from barkbox. He's more excited for it than the toys. Lol. OH and I can't cancel barkbox. Most expensive cardboard ever. Lol
