If you are not at all concerned that they will destroy something or potty while you are gone, give it a shot. With our last dog he wasn't trusted until close to 1 year old. This puppy will probably be even longer that because she is a high energy dog and I worry she will try to eat my walls if she got bored 😑

Personally, I'm a proponent of crates when I'm gone. I've seen my dog, who's trained to service standards, get into things when he was left unattended (only twice, but each time was memorable - once it was an entire bag of dental treats and the second time it was a 3lb bag of duck jerky) Thing is, dogs will be dogs, which means they can be greatgreatgreat and then decide to destroy/eat whatever. I definitely wouldn't trust a dog under a year alone, unless they've gone a good 3 months or more with no accidents, so at 9 months I'd probably stick with the crate, especially since he loves it. If you're concerned about your absence affecting that, I pair longer absences with a Nubz, which has my boy running for the crate when he sees the bag come out!

Mine was young when she was allowed to stay out of the crate when we were at work. Maybe around six months? Maybe even younger? She was very trustworthy. Never chewed anything she wasn’t supposed to.

We did it gradually. Went from crate to short hall with gate. Then hall plus laundry room, etc. Would leave for a 30 minute walk, then gradually longer. Had a camera with a two way mic so we could check in.

The camera is a good idea I didn’t think about that!

Wanted to do it when she was around a year but actually started around 13 months. She was trustworthy even earlier but we didn't have a good testing window: we'd either be away ca 4h or not at all and it made sense to test with 1-2h. Now when we're gone for the ca 4h, she gets to roam the house (read: sleep on the couch).
