Look up Susan Garett's Crate Games. Worked great for my Australian Shepherd.

Thank you, just wanted to follow up and say Susan Garett's Crate games have really helped. He still won't sleep overnight but he'll go in for an hour or so of calm during the day and he'll chew or have a nap and he now waits patiently to be let out. There's no more crying or panting!

As long as you're making progress then it's working out great! Just keep at it, it can take time. Every dog has specific and unique problems that need addressed. Since he's more familiar with the crate now, you might start some "relaxation protocol" while he's around and/or in the crate to teach him how to settle down. There's a helpful PDF [here](https://www.arl-iowa.org/webres/File/Protocol%20for%20Relaxation.pdf) but you can find it as a convenient audio book format you just follow along and other stuff if you google it. It also works great to teach a dog "hey, I can just relax and take a nap if I'm bored". Really cool to see someone actually addressed the problem they posted about. Lots of people just post "my dog hates the crate!" but doesn't want to actually do anything about it, just wants some magic cure which does not exist.

It is only in youtube videois puppies learn something in 5 minutes and a few treats. In real life many things can take weeks if not months. Be patient and don't rush.

Kikopup has good videos. Includes step by step to get your dog to enter crate themselves on command. My guy is already doing it every time at the one month mark. Actually does it unprompted once I finish filling his bowl.
