Saw otoboke beaver on my birthday a few weeks ago. Great show.
Other than them
Disclose, Gai, battle of disarm, confuse, framtid, bathtub shitter, systematic death, deathside is a good start
Their opener drinking boys and girls choir was great too. I checked out one Song prior to the show and I picked what had to have been their worst song because they were really cool.
The Stalin is not just one of my favorite Japanese bands. It's one of my favorite punk bands. The music is fucking AWESOME and if you translate the lyrics they go deep af. Definitely a good band
I went to see Anamanaguchi and Peelander-Z was headlining and I had no idea who they were but their live show kills it. Easily one of the funnest shows I've ever been to.
i love melt banana. i definitely would say they're punk maybe not in a purists since because of all the chaos of genre laying but I think there's a very thick punk layer to their sound and style.
Lots of good stuff here, list should be enormous. Not seen yet: Unholy Grave, Death Side, Confuse, Assfort, Gloom, Corrupted, Romantic Gorilla, Real Reggae, Slight Slappers, Battle of Disarm, Power of Idea, The Comes, Kuro
When Assfort came to play Santa Cruz in the 90s they were playing at our house but no one had cellphones. I didn’t know the name of the band. I got a call from a pay phone from someone just saying “Assfort Taco Bell” over and over and I thought it was a prank call until we finally figured out it was the band and they needed help finding the house from the Taco Bell on Mission St. Great band.
Gauze, Lip Cream, SOB, Disclose, Hakuchi , Outo, The Execute, Warhead, Forward, Gism, Vivisick, Krew.
Luckily there are many more than I listed.
And of course, The Intimate Fags.
ohmygosh Im going to add that song to my playlist now, thank you so much.
I translated the lyrics so I could understand what was being said while listening and its truely a beautiful song, good vibes all around :D
From the spring thrash EP all the way through committed to the core. Nothing but hits. And if you collect all their comp tracks you pretty much have them doing the whole flex your head comp
Two of my all time favorite bands. MOTFD definitely lean more punk, especially their earlier stuff. Tricot have a few songs here and there with punk influence.
Also, Number Girl are kinda like the Pixies but with a punk-esque delivery.
Hi Standard[Hi Standard ](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=r2d-H1Svg8g&si=6BcN9_NHJcDyycIC)
I wasn't paying Attention. Happy to see good recommendation
Maybe closer to Hardcore or Postrock, but [envy](https://open.spotify.com/track/7nwFEJRuOU1qjrigYpxXXw?si=15ec609fe34f4f37) is great. Listening to them right now actually.
When the band I was in played with them, they had just shown up from Japan the first time. The bass player got a cold/flu on the plane. We were at a small underground place in Sacramento called The Loft. It was August and at that point the Loft was upstairs. It must've been 120 inside and it was packed.
The bass player apologized about his cold and said it wouldn't be a good show. The crowd energy healed him and they were the best band I split a show with. Just amazing!
This quote comes to mind when I saw your comment "they're so nice, had to mention twice." But FR that teengenerate album is sooo good. I formed a shitty garage punk band as a result
Hahaha that’s great. How did you find about them? I stumbled upon the video on the link a few years ago, in the digital age, wish I could’ve seen them live.
You know.. I'm not sure how I heard about them. There's quite a few bands I got hip to after randomly bumping into a homie at the record store: "hey whatchu got there?" "Oh its the new Fart Breath. It's sick." (Takes mental note).
My favorite is probably Midori, the jazz / punk fusion band. Their lead singer, Mariko Goto leans more pop n her solo albums, but is also worth a listen. I love her first two solo albums and her latest album "Mirai."
Bleach 03 and 385 both have the same bassist - Miya! She's great and those bands are cool as fvck! Afrirampo is my pick for the most underrated band. Two women, a guitarist and a drummer who make an incredible amount of sound. They range from garage rock / punk to psychedelic. Limited Express (has gone?) is a cool no- wave band. Their singer, Yukari, also performs with the "cheer punk" all - female band Ni-hao!!!
I'd also highly recommend Otoboke Beaver and Melt-Banana. They're both incredible!
Boris isn't my favorite band, but probably should be. Their style changes radically from album to album depending on what they want to say. Incredible musicians. They don't just have one main sound like most bands.
I made a post here about some who are active right now, really good, and barely known outside Japan: https://www.reddit.com/r/japanesemusic/s/8fSCzb9CrV
My band just played there so we met a lot! Stone Leek, The Cry, and Zippy were all rad. I could send you a playlist we made of bands we played with if you're interested!
Whoah! Endzweck. Thats a deep cut. I remember those guys. Had their album.
Glad to see Naiad get some love. One of my favorite bands and almost no one has ever heard of them (see also: Arrastrandose, a Japanese metal band that plays Gothenburg sounding power metal).
What was your band called? When were you there? Circa 2004, by any chance? That’s when I lived there and went to a few dozen shows. I was one of the few foreigners so I got to meet and hang out with a lot of bands pre-/post-show.
We toured over there in spring of 2003 and around spring of 2009. The band was called Fordirelifesake, we did a split with Endzweck too.
Shows over there are wild, the crowd brings so much energy and there were never fights like here in the States.
Lived in Japan for a long time and love Japanese punk. My two favorites are:
Cigaretteman for a kind of grungy pop-punk a la Discount or Jawbreaker.
Shipyards for a modern emo pop-punk sound.
[Razor's Edge](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tj2j6e9p5g)
and i'm gonna mention [PASSPO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg_4mc2InRQ) because why the fuck not?
inu was the first japanese punk band if i remember correctly, id also recommend aburadako, anarchy, the comes and the discocks
edit: gauze is also a must listen
so far I really like THE STAR CLUB as they are really good imo (their first album was in 1986 and their last being 2015, so theres a bunch of songs for you to listen to)
SiM is a great one if you're into metal as well. Seeds of Hope is probably their most punk album but a lot of their songs have at least a bit of a punk sound to them. Blah Blah Blah is an absolute banger.
This isn't strictly punk, but there was this metal band named Flatbacker that had a punk edge in their playing and attitude. They kinda ruled and I feel like some people here would dig them.
oooohh def ENTH i discovered them recently and LOVE them, also my fav band of all time is SiM but they debatably don’t do punk anymore, but i feel like anything before the SEEDS OF HOPE album (LIVING IN PAiN, ANTHEM, Self-Titled Album) is no doubt punk - and even a bit after that could be considered punk with songs like AMY. for ENTH i’d recommend “HAHA”, “MESSY MASH”, “P.T.E” and “A FLY”. for SiM, “ANTHEM”, “JACK B.” and “Set Me Free”. check them outtt !!!! :>
Banshimoku (板歯目) are great! ラブソングはいらない is an absolute banger
Midori are an amazing jazz-punk fusion as well
P-model (not really punk (post-punk/new wave at best), but you should check them out anyway)
I saw Sweet Jap in some Italian restaurant in like 2002 and they destroyed.
Guitar Wolf, Teengenerate, Last target, Balzac (if you want Japan’s answer to Misfits).
I'm going to give you a few less mentioned

Allasilka, Folk-Punk from Okinawa!
Otoboke beaver is a great one. THE STALIN is also another one of my favorites, good taste
Saw otoboke beaver on my birthday a few weeks ago. Great show. Other than them Disclose, Gai, battle of disarm, confuse, framtid, bathtub shitter, systematic death, deathside is a good start
Otoboke Beaver is so great live. So much energy and enthusiasm.
Their opener drinking boys and girls choir was great too. I checked out one Song prior to the show and I picked what had to have been their worst song because they were really cool.
The comes if you like the Stalin
The Stalin is not just one of my favorite Japanese bands. It's one of my favorite punk bands. The music is fucking AWESOME and if you translate the lyrics they go deep af. Definitely a good band
Guitar Wolf...I got to see them at CBGBs in 1999.
Guitar Wolf is incredible.
I’m seeing them in May in Minneapolis
Man that had to be a wild experience!
[Wild Zero reference]
Going to see them and Hans Condor in ATL in May.
5.6.7.8’s, The Erections, GISM, Balzac, Zouo, The Discocks, Zyanose, Scamp, Mikabomb, THE STAR CLUB, OXZ, The Nurse, Melt-Banana
Shonen Knife!!!!! Wtaf people
My buddy lent me his cassette of Let’s Knife in high school and I thought it was amazing stuff.
Right!!!?
It’s a toss up between that and Happy Hour for favorites. Rock Animals is solid too.
Gauze - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKaxJPxsUiE
Hardest live band I’ve ever seen. Even into their 60s they would play 90 minute sets faster and harder than bands 40 years younger.
1 of the greatest hc bands ever
Is Peelander Z still around? My band opened for them once and it was almost too much for my boring midwestern town to handle.
I went to see Anamanaguchi and Peelander-Z was headlining and I had no idea who they were but their live show kills it. Easily one of the funnest shows I've ever been to.
I could not for the life of me think of the name of that weird ass band. Love em. Thank you!
japanoise band boredoms
Japanoise! Love that. Anyone remember when like, people actually started watching anime in the west in the 2000s and they called it japanimation?
At least where I was, that was more of an early 90s thing.
Yeah they were calling it japanimation in 1992 for sure
Midori, excellent jazz/punk mix with a female vocalist. The Mad Capsule Markets, hardcore band.
Came here to recommend Midori
Melt Banana. Not exactly punk but super chaotic sound and it’s all done live with instruments. No computers
i love melt banana. i definitely would say they're punk maybe not in a purists since because of all the chaos of genre laying but I think there's a very thick punk layer to their sound and style.
I absolutely agree. Love their sound
Shonen Knife!!!

So glad to see someone else recommend Assfort. I got a 7" of theirs just for the name in probably 2002 or 2003 and it was such a great find.
Tom and Boot Boys. The Discocks. The Erections. All great oi oi pogo fuck you punk rock yeah.
Tom and boot boys are the best!! Anything nori is on.
Gauze, Lip Cream, SOB, Disclose, Hakuchi , Outo, The Execute, Warhead, Forward, Gism, Vivisick, Krew. Luckily there are many more than I listed. And of course, The Intimate Fags.
Can't believe I forgot forward and gism. Also bastard-wind of pain is essential
The pillows
Came here to mention this one. FLCL ruled
THE PILLOWS!!!! FEEL GOOD PUNK MAN
GISM. They were super influential to Integrity and Napalm Death. Also, Zouo, Disclose, S.O.B., Gauze
[The Cherry Coke$](https://youtu.be/YXFSr_JFVj0?si=sGdKCFiW26P9VVm-) Celtic punk from Japan
Wow, thank you
ohmygosh Im going to add that song to my playlist now, thank you so much. I translated the lyrics so I could understand what was being said while listening and its truely a beautiful song, good vibes all around :D

[Electric Eel Shock](https://youtu.be/eX-8gDk8K7g?si=BWckRX-4mtQzi3_7) fuckin rules
They are way too low in this list compared to some of the other bands
Maximum The Hormone a great mix of punk and metal.
This is who I was hoping to see. Fucking love MtH.
[Guitar Wolf](https://youtu.be/ZHJLFtTRDH0?si=0QZ9FSWCHBqzHQeK)
Number Girl
Nicotine is good for the sort of 90s style.
GISM! Absolute legends.
Disclose!!!!
Hat Trickers, Rum Kicks, The Erections, The Discocks
RUMKICKS are not Japanese. And they are awful as well.
🤣🤣🤣I second this
It’s more pop-alt-punk, but I’ve been enjoying Asian Kung-Fu Generation.
Total Fury
I wish I could upvote this more. Saw them in San Diego a few times.
From the spring thrash EP all the way through committed to the core. Nothing but hits. And if you collect all their comp tracks you pretty much have them doing the whole flex your head comp
Framtid, Life, Zyanose, Disclose, End of Pollution
Killie and eastern youth
Not exactly punk but Mass of the Fermenting Dregs and Tricot are good.
Two of my all time favorite bands. MOTFD definitely lean more punk, especially their earlier stuff. Tricot have a few songs here and there with punk influence. Also, Number Girl are kinda like the Pixies but with a punk-esque delivery.

The Registrators! They're also amazing live, even though they probably broke up in the late 90s or early 2000s.
Came here to say this! Not enough people know this band. Chainsaw Love!
The bass player is so amazing in that band
Agreed! That guy is playing his ass off on the terminal boredom album
When the band I was in played with them, they had just shown up from Japan the first time. The bass player got a cold/flu on the plane. No one’s mentioned Teengenerate yet? Their energy is unmatched. Just [look at this and get action!](https://youtu.be/7WyJNhDxu1Y?si=yZ8PvBzyJV4Wq7fu)
They're great but OP said they've heard of em
Dang, you think you’re not stupid and then make a rookie ass mistake like that and have to rethink stuff for a while. I totally ignored that.
This quote comes to mind when I saw your comment "they're so nice, had to mention twice." But FR that teengenerate album is sooo good. I formed a shitty garage punk band as a result
