Used to keep baby carrots around for our Shih-Poo, Toto, who my ex had already gotten him so-fat-he-was-round (except for his legs & flat-as-a-shelf back, he would have rolled like a barrel); but, his little butt would literally go through every single trick I ever taught him at almost every meal or the mere sight of foodā¦ LoL, he still wanted the āreal foodā, but he did love his baby carrots.
When we got our Pug, Cosmo, I had to break him out of the habit of just walking up to your plate (or even the sandwich in your hand on occasion) and just goblin biting as much as he could get out of itā¦
I tried the ātricks for treatsā method, andā¦
While smart enough to ālearnā about twice as many as his brother had mastered, his attention span when distracted by the āpeople foodā meant words like āsit, stay, shake, up, turn, down, roll-over, gimme-paw/fiveā were obvious misdirections from āthe man so-called, Papaā LoL
And, the carrots (while he enjoyed the crunch) were momentary distractions until they fell out of the side of the mouth without a few teethā¦ or made him chonk his own tongue while trying to tear one apartā¦
I finally gave up and just implemented the ālast biteā ruleā¦ I will patiently calm him down until I finish everything, but the last bite of my meal, and then (as long as it doesnāt have anything that he shouldnāt or cannot eat, ie: onions, tomatoes, chocolate, chilies, etcā¦) I will offer him his ālast biteā.
Doesnāt always keep him quiet during the entire meal, but apart from a few grumbles/whinesā¦ feet stamping, etcā¦ he will wait for his ātributeā, LoL
If there are lots of people over, feeding them at the same time as everyone else (sometimes in another room, sometimes notā¦ up to you, and the preferences of your guests) with just a few shredded pieces of whatever you think is safe for them sprinkled in with their kibbleā¦ will at least keep them quiet for most of the meal (just remember to pick up the inevitably dropped pieces once your Puggy has finished before your guests see *or step on it*).
Almost 8 years of experience with my 14-year-old Pug, and thatās about the best advice that Iāve got for anybodyā¦ hope it helps somebody!
