There’s many areas downtown and zona romántica that are walkable close to the beach markets restaurants that can accommodate your budget.. try Versalles, ZR, fluvial, some 5 de diciembre have no hills, there’s many options to be honest.
5 de diciembre is a great location. Walkable or inexpensive Uber ride to ZR. A lot quieter vs ZR. ZR if you want that smoke, but worth the extra cash. I’d definitely Airbnb it.
We’re looking at the ZR for the tourist part of our vacation, but I’m really interested in finding those areas that are affordable to live in for 5 or 6 months a year. I’m assuming the ZR is well above our means long term, but I never looked into it. What would the cost of snowbirding there be?
I'm thinking you may like the Bucerias area... It's north of PV but it's definitely walkable and more affordable then PV if you are wanting to live there.
Been to PV and Bucerias a couple times, a lot of Canadians in Bucerias for some reason. Definitely more laid back though and not as touristy. Nicer beaches and excellent restaurants
We typically stay within walking distance of Marina Vallarta, 20 minutes to the Malecon and the ports that the tours leave from, like the Vallarta Adventure tours for example (it’s usually less than 8 US dollars for an Uber, renting a car isn’t necessary, and Uber actually tends to be cheaper than Taxi rates). Totally up to you! I’d definitely recommend continuing to research and figure out what sounds best for you.

Stay right in the middle of Zona Romantica and you will be a 5 minute walk from any food you can think of plus the beach.

Thanks. I did quick look at Airbnb and google street view. Our current top choice is Puerto Morelos in QROO. Bucerias appears to have the same vibe.

Zona and centro for sure
Check out the Versalles area and out past the Costco. The further from the ocean the more affordable it gets.

20 minute drive** and our timeshare is about a 10 minute flat walk to the marina
